Hey Yelp!
I am in wedding planning hell and am looking for wedding favor ideas that are not stupid, cheesy or useless. I kind of don't see the point of wedding favors but I think both rather traditional mothers involved would kill me if I didn't have them so can you guys tell me some awesome favors you have seen at weddings? I'm particularly interested in something kind of "San Francisco-y."
Thanks!!

The theme was two goldfish swimming together (they handpainted paper parasols- for outdoor wedding) and the fish (might have been carps) loved it as it is unique and we all get to take it home. At the banquet, on each table were the bowl of goldfish and as favors we had 2 ounces tins of Jasmine tea with the fish motif was on the tins. I was enchanted..

wow cathy -- it's hard to do.
i don't like alot of clutter so i'm VErY happy when someone just gives chocolate in those cute little boxes with the couples initials on it. You can eat it now or later.
To make it from san Francisco, use a local chocolate and put a little note inside with the shop it came from if people like it and want more.
on the cheaper side, you can get M&Ms in your wedding colors with messages on them.

I recently decided that for my wedding that I would give a donation to charity as a favor. I'm going to package a card explaining the donation in a nice box with a ribbon. But also, as a take away my place cards are going to be frames so they can have that for a photo of the wedding or something san francisco-ish. Good Luck!

I like wedding favors, actually favors in general. :P Don't do Orchids. My cousin did that and I bet they were expensive. Mine died.
Do you have a theme at your wedding?

One of our friends did bottles of wine as favors. They had a smaller wedding though (like 30 people), so it wasn't so expensive. Maybe do a less expensive wine like 2-buck chuck? By the time you spend $ on favors, might be the same amount. You can do something like to add a more personal touch:

I liked getting a cd of favorite songs of the bride and groom
I also got a wine bottle topper carved out of wood by the grooms father

I don't know if I'd call it the "best" I'd call it the funniest....this fancy wedding and the bride loved Jack Daniels so she gave out little bottles of Jack Daniels with bows with the wedding date and their names on them. I was saving mine and my stupid ex drank it....Ass wipe.....

We gave out CDs of our favorite songs with our story of how we met inside and funny pictures of our bridal party. Our friends still tell us that they play that CD from time to time. I guess they really like it, because we don't ask them about the CD - they bring it up.

A wedding I went to gave a wild flower seed packet that was made of handmade paper with pieces of leaves and flower petals in it. Very green and outdoorsy like the couple. I loved it!
I don't need or want something expensive. Thoughtful or creative is super! Like a letter or poem you write to us or a cutely packaged sweet. It really is the gesture, not the $$$.
You have the freedom to do whatever suits your personalities and style in this day and age!

I'm in wedding planning hell too! We LOVE Specialty's cookies and are planning on a milk (hopefully Clover) and cookies send off treat. Two cookies per bag and a little milk carton like grade school.
Would actually love thoughts from fellow Yelpers on this idea...

Thanks for all the replies guys! As for wedding "theme" I don't have one. I was kind of uh... going for the theme of wedding I guess. Does a wedding have to have a theme? Uh oh....
I love some of these ideas though. Thanks for all the inspiration!

My sister did the chocolate cable car thing. I did the flower seed packet (lavender... my theme color was purple).

We are going to do little flower packets that they can plant when they get home. Didn't want to use some cheap plastic toy/container.
Reduce, reuse, recycle... come on bay area.

I didnt do favors - I was spent literally and it seems they always go to waste
However, the coolest ones I have received : little bamboo plants, lottery tickets with your name etc on them, little magnets with the couples picture and I always love the good CD

Not sure if it was said but we made a Mix CD of some of our favorite songs, with a cover explaining the relevancy of each one i.e. first concert we saw together, our first dance song (Tupelo Honey), etc.

I like the cookies & Milk idea.
It would be even better if you could get the hall to warm them up for the way out...like they do at Double Tree.
I'd totallly use the wine stopper!
LOVE the wild flower seeds too.

I went to a wedding where they had 2-piece Cocoa Bella chocolate boxes. I thought that was perfect - Cocoa Bella boxed them all and the bride stuck wedding colored bows on top.
It was simple and looked fantastic.

Homemade jam. I still have it, and it's AWESOME. Small jar, of course, but mixed berries from Washington. Sooo good.

We received a certificate from the happy couple saying a tree was planted in our name. I thought this was unique and valuable. Everyone at the wedding loved it ... and each couple received one certificate.
And ... next month we have a wedding and the bride is making donations to the Pet and Wildlife Fund (
www.PetandWildlifeFund...) in Oakland in lieu of individual favors ... she said it makes her feel good to give back and nothing goes into the landfill.
Best wishes for a wonderful wedding!

I heard Golden Gate Fortune Cookies in Chinatown does custom orders. That's pretty fun and local, since fortune cookies started in SF.

I had a destination wedding (Mexico) and we gave out homemade eye covers (or eye masks) along with small bags of necessities (Pepto, asprin, sunblock...) My friends are still using the eye covers today. (we gave out a bunch of other stuff too, but that was the main favor)
Favors I have liked from other weddings: coffee scoop (still using it), push up puppets, mini tubes of sunblock (wedding in Hawaii)
