This is for Mission residents/used book shoppers/ general word of caution--
I was in Dog Eared Books on Valencia yesterday afternoon reading in the armchair there and definitely picked up some painful bed bug bites all over the parts of my body that were in contact with the chair's fabric.
Not posting this to rag on them in any way--I love that bookstore and go there all the time. I let them know, and just want to warn people because bed bug infestations are seriously bad news and can devastate furniture/buildings.
I've spent the day DIY fumigating my house and wanted to warn others....please avoid that place at least for the next few days until they get rid of that furniture!

Rachel "This is an outrage!" H. says:
Are you sure it was bed bugs? Did you physically see the bed bugs? They don't normally come out in the afternoon. Maybe you were just allergic to the fabric or something on the fabric.

I think most everything in the Mission is infested with something or another. I would only enter that zone while wearing a hazmat suit. You can get one here-
http://store.pksafety....The only downside is that you may not be recognized as a fellow hipster because your tatoos and wallet with chain won't be visible. However you can still ride or push your fixie around while wearing it. I'm not sure if the guys at Zeitgeist will let you in or not though...

Wouldn't doubt it. You never know who's been sitting on that furniture. Thanks for the warning.

Annie G. says:
Yes, I know what bed bug bites look like and this is definitely bed bugs.
Ive been hearing about bed bug infestations all over the city so again people should just be aware...

klik "just putin that out there" w. says:
Bedbug infestations have been going on all over the city since I moved here in 91, I don't understand the recent, sudden paranoia over them. It was probably fleas if anything and if you think you really had the bedbugs you're a fool if you think a "DIY" fumigation is going to eradicate them unless you used DDT which you can't get over the counter so your story holds either very little water or you have a real bedbug infestation which means you gotta bag up all your clothes, roll up all your carpet and have that shit disposed of properly. THEN you have a professional crew come in and do the REAL fumigation.

i think it's kind of dangerous for you to make this claim without proof. couldn't they sue you for slander?

ChiYan "Kotori" T. says:

You can get bedbugs from an expensive, fancy hotel. They have been on the rise nationally for a few years. It coulda been fleas too.

heh..it's funny that in the article from mission mission, the author sarcastically asks if she was reading Twilight, and then the author of the 2nd article in sfist..SAYS she was reading Twilight. See how things get twisted..?

Kevin S. says:
I think you may have actually come across a hipster infestation. The itching and rashlike symptoms are similar.

bedbugs have moved from the tenderloin into the mission.
http://bedbugregistry.com has the grim tale. i recently was updating the images for flyers and it's so horrifying to see them spreading. do not take free things off the sidewalk in the tenderloin or the mission. ignore the bedbug deniers, they're like holocaust deniers. anything that hasn't happened to them never happened.

Hello all-
I work at Dog Eared and we are taking this complaint seriously. We have moved the furniture outside and a bed bug specialist is coming to check out the scene tonight. Will keep you posted. Really sorry to hear that you may have been bitten by something. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Hey there,
I tooo work at Dog Eared and I'd just like everyone to know that the message over here has been received and as a public service we have now disposed of our big old red couch and cushioned chair. New furniture will be arriving soon. We will miss you old furniture but alas this day had to come. If you could spread this word that people need not fear that too would be rad.

Wow, kudos to the dog eared books folks for the quick action. I will also miss that cool old furniture, but good idea not taking any chances. Dog eared books is an awesome place to check out if you haven't been there already.
