For the non-recreational bikers amongst us, the SFBC has organized a serious muscle-puncher-ride: THE SEVEN HELLS OF SAN FRANCISCO! It takes on 7 of the steepest hills in the city. It may not seem like much fun (I mean, you could also eat chips on the couch and watch TV), but for sure, it is something you can brag about to your friends... if you managed to survive!

When: Saturday 21st of June
Time: 11am (finishes at approximately 3pm)
Start: Panhandle Statue, Fell and Baker
What to bring: low-gear bike, drinks & food
More info & map of the route:
http://maps.google.com...

ARE YOU UP TO THIS CHALLENGE?

P.S. I don't know if you have to be a member to be able to participate.

Shooooooot I use google maps just to find the least hilly routes to my SF destinations.  This 7 hells thing goes against all my principles!

Oh, come on you guys! I'm from the Netherlands; we don;t even know what a hill looks like 'cause our country is as flat as a pancake! Err... Now wait a minute... I guess this means that I don't know what kind of an ordeal this 7 hells trip will be, eh? Ah well... Ignorance is bliss! I'll give an update after the torture has ended (assuming that I can still use my fingers to type).

I read this and though "the tenderloin, what are the other 6?" :-) it sounds like fun, but I don't think I qualify as a non-recreational cyclist. I might be able to WALK up the hills *grin* the last time I tried a few were pretty darn hard.

While I think this is a cool (deliciously painful) ride, it does not cover all the steepest blocks/streets in SF. The big problem is one-way streets rendering most of them technically illegal to ride up. But here's the breakdown for the curious:

1. Filbert between Leavenworth and Hyde is a 31.5 percent grade. Not on the ride.
2. 22nd between Church and Vicksburg, 31.5 percent. Not on the ride
3. Jones between Union and Filbert, 29 percent. On the ride! (Ouch!)
4. Duboce between Buena Vista and Alpine Terrace, 27.9 percent. Not on the ride.
5. Jones between Green and Union, 26 percent. On the ride! (That makes two blocks of hell on Jones!)
6. Webster between Vallejo and Broadway, 26 percent. Not on the ride.
7. Duboce between Divisadero and Alpine Terrace, 25 percent. Not on the ride.
8. Duboce between Castro and Divisadero, 25 percent. Not on the ride.
9. Jones between Pine and California, 24.8 percent. Not on the ride.
10. Fillmore between Vallejo and Broadway, 24 percent. Not on the ride.

Actually, Dennis, I think it is because a lot of them are one-way streets and only allow traffic to go downhill. So they can't really promote/create a ride that would violate traffic laws. Now, if you are in a law-breaking mood...

I decided to put some of my money where my mouth (or keyboard) was and zipped over to Duboce to climb the last 3 blocks from Castro up to Buena Vista which are 25%, 25% and 27.9% as you go up (with a nice 10% approach from Duboce Park for a couple blocks. I will add the disclaimer that these are very short blocks, but I was able to grind up them on my road bike which has a standard double on it (so not really geared for monster climbs) with only moderate wheezing on my part. So, it can be done! BTW, the "Hell" part was quite appropriate since my bike computer was showing an ambient air temp of 101 degrees out there! Ugh!

Found out that my Samsung D900 does all kinds of conversions:
23*C = 73.4*F (which it will be tomorrow according to some websites)
29*C = 84.2*F (which it was today according to some websites)
The 101*F Don "El Lento Anciano" B. was talking about would equal approximately 38.3*C

Maybe we should hijack Critical Mass and take them the wrong way up those hills.  We could throw our bikes into peoples' cars at the top and maybe fire bomb a few houses whilst were at it, it would be like adding a cherry on top.
