please fix the linkology here.

"Legend has it Davy Crockett killed a bear when he was three. A distant relative of the 19th-century frontiersman has done the same thing at five.

Tre Merritt, a 5-year-old boy from Arkansas, killed a black bear Sunday, according to his grandfather.
"(The bear) came in about 40 to 50 yards," Mike Merritt, Tre's grandfather, told KATV of Little Rock, Ark, "and when he got in the open, I whistled at him and he stopped and I said, 'Shoot Tre.' "

And that's what his grandson did, killing the 400-pound animal.

"I was up in the stand and I seen the bear," Tre Merritt told KATV. "It came from the thicket and it was beside the road and I shot it."

According to the report, Tre's father said his son began shooting when he was 2 1/2 and killed three deer last year. What else would you expect from a decendant of the "King of the Wild Frontier?"

"His 10th great-grandfather was Davy Crockett," Mike Merritt said. "And Davy supposedly killed him a bear when he was three. And Tre is five and really killed a bear. I really doubt if Davy killed one when he was three."

PETRINO DIDN'T ADDRESS THE TEAM

Jay Glazer of http://FOXSports.com reports that former Falcons coach Bobby Petrino resigned without addressing the team.

Glazer also reports that Petrino held a brief (as in 10 seconds) meeting with his assistants.

"He just said to us, 'Guys I've resigned, I'm going to Arkansas.  I'm sorry. I'll be talking with you guys in the future.'  And with that he turned and walked out the door.  We haven't been told anything else," one assistant coach told Glazer.

Several players called Petrino's handling of the situation "classless."

Yeah.

In all seriousness, its kind of sad.  Do we really need to be teaching 5 year old kids that killing animals for no reason is glamorous?

Damn, at 5 years old most still can't even read, you almost can't tie your shoes or know what life is.

And you're teaching someone at that age to take a life for no reason?

That is why I posted this.

It's all come off as a joke, as you can see above.  But its like, either laugh about this, or cry.

This kid will be around after most of us are gone.  Humans are still teaching humans to kill for fun.

sad

I feel sorry for the kid.  It's not his fault.  I was also raised to go the gun classes at an early age.  I guess I was a late bloomer, I wasn't shooting a lot and throwing dynamite caps in the rivers & lakes until I was around 7 years old.  Taught that shootin shit was great.  At age 16, I watched a deer I had shot slowly die in front of my eyes.  At close range.  It was looking right into my eyes.  It gave me this look like "what did I do to you?"  It was such a gentle creature up close.

I vowed to never hunt again, much to the dismay of my family.  I never did, and never regretted that.

Why kill a bear?  Why...Why...Why?

Especially a Black Bear.  They're benign, reclusive, and  no good to eat.  They don't bother livestock, and they have little if any negative impact on the environment.  Your odds of getting attacked by one are near nil unless you corner a mamma with cubs.

*heavy sigh*.  It's just something I don't get....

So was this 5-year-old shooting a .357 magnum, a .44 magnum, a BAR, or an AK-47?  I kind of doubt he killed a bear, too.

Good point David.  I grew up in a family that was insane for all kinds of hunting.  A huge tradition for generations and generations.

If you were a boy, you'd be shooting a gun by age 6 or 7.  Seriously. And surprisingly good at it -- kids learn that stuff fast if someone teaches them.

But even in that gung-ho culture, everyone knew that you don't take a boy even dear hunting until age 10 or so.  Prior to that, its just small birds or whatever.

Bears?  Bears are a whole other story.  You hit them in the wrong place, and they will attack and kill you sometimes.  There's a lot of factors -- but basically nobody would take their boys bear hunting until age 14 or 15 even in that nutty culture.

Someone that had  a kid shoot a bear would be considered an idiot, even in the hunting world, for the most part.

I agree, Matty.

And the 5 year old used the phrase "stand" for the trees/hunting region.  These are possibly his words, but sound more like the words of the only "witness" with him: his grandpa.

I heard the grandpa talk on the news, story is starting to sound fishy...but who knows.
