It starts in elementary school. But it doesn't stop. These girls (grown ass women really) were just screaming outside my house. I thought something was wrong. The dog started barking. But it was nothing. They were just---Screaming.
WTF???

They're practicing in the event of an emergency? They're preparing themselves for Six Flags? They do it because they can?

Dale "The World Shouts Save Us, I Whisper Back No" D. says:
Probably because society doesn't normally expect women to scream and to get a truly emotional point across that's probably what is sometimes necessary.
Screaming is also cathartic, as explored by Dr. Arthur Janov in "The Primal Scream".
It could also be just be them being annoying but keep an eye out for police cruisers.

I hear you. My night job is at SDSU and all weekend long it's just drunk girls screaming at the top of their lungs for no good reason. And then people wonder how girls get raped in pretty high traffic areas around here and no one heard anything. Well, because the one girl screaming that actually wasn't just being a stupid bitch, and needed some help went un-noticed. I don't know how many times I have been outside getting some air and heard all this shrieking and get upset and wonder if someone needs help, only to realize it's a group of girls rounding the corner wearing a dishcloth to cover their entire bodies, just screaming b/c it's apparently really really fun.

Todd "Widmer Beer is my new life blood" P. says:
Maybe it's just some primal instinct to scream out when in groups.
I hear coyotes out in the distance yelping or whatever they call the sound coyotes make.
Hey, wait a minute. Coyotes "Yelping"??? That would make coyotes way smarter than I thought.
I wonder if they are reviewing the best neighborhood to eat a cat.
Gawd I'm weird.
Where do I come up with this shit?

Back on topic:
I only yell (I don't scream) when I'm extremely frustrated...or if I get spooked...or if I'm riding a rollercoaster.
I don't scream just for the heck of it- I have an alto voice, so it's bad on the vocal chords :P

Mel "yer all up in my graphs!" S. says:
Marisol explained it all. It's either frustration, spooked or riding roller coasters. And they obviously don't care about their vocal chords.

I have to admit...
I wanted to yell when I saw the Jury Duty summons in the mail. I have to go next week. That blows :(

Omg I cannot beguin to express how much I hate it when girls just scream for no reason. At first I thought it was just the preppy annoying girls that did it, only to realize that age isnt a factor to this screaming. Whenever I hear a girl screaming for no reason I just wanna go up to her and slap her and say "SHUT UP" hahaha. No but really, I think they sub-consiously do it for attention or something. I can proudly say I am not and have never been a screamer.

Kristen "with an E" M. says:
for the same reason that little boys deepen their voices. (before puberty boys and girls should have the same pitch, generally speaking)

Stephanie C. says:
High pitched voices and screaming are NOT the same thing.

Kristen "with an E" M. says:
i realize that stephanie, but my comparison is not the voices, but in the way that people conform to gender norms without even knowing it, even as young children. these norms include women screaming.

Brian "Berry Your Dead, mmm..." T. says:
Because people let them.
If a woman or womyn or girl or grrl or lady or ho is all like screaming and not in the good way, not on stage in some band, or acting, I simply walk away and let her scream all she wants.
It is about respect and communication. If i was screaming at some female, I would want her to walk away from it. Let teh whole thing mellow out to really get to what it really is, ya know. If it means going for a long bike ride, meditation, surfing, hike, vision quest, whatever. Do what you need to do as an individual and learn how to not be combative or caustic.

I could never stand Pacific Beach bars for the same reason....its like fingernails screeching across a blackboard.

lisa "mad kisser" f. says:
okay folks, but I wasn't talking about Good screaming. Or screaming At someone. Steph C hit the nail. I Hate hate hate when girls just Scream. For real, stfu. And Kristen, boys don't Choose to deepen their voices because of gender norms. It's physiological (hormones, girl).

Christy "loved by dirtbags" R. says:
I scream if there's a giant spider crawling on me. Actually it's more of a shriek/yell. Raspy and weird and horrible sounding. But I don't really have a high-pitched voice.
I do girl scream on roller coasters.
I do not girl scream in groups of girls in front of Lisa's house (or anywhere else).
