Hi I am graduating from CSUC this spring and moving to San Diego. I am hoping someone can tell me a few things about the area. First is San Diego gay friendly? I am use to San Francisco and I figured So-Cal would be as progressive but I heard otherwise.
Next, I want a good neighborhood near the beach what are the best neighborhoods...ones I am considering- PB, Ocean Beach, del mar, encinitas?
finally does anyone have any tips on getting a good house for rent...what is the best resource in that area...craigslist, local paper, Realtor?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my the firts time in my life that I have moved. I am a little scared but mostly excited!

a few tidbits of advice--SD has a small but thriving queer community. Though it's not on the beach, I'd recommend checking out the neighborhoods of Hillcrest, North Park, and University Heights- they're your best best in terms of LGBTQ-owned and -friendly bars, restaurants, and just general services. I found my apt. through Craigslist, but surprisingly a lot of folks here simply post signs on their condos/ houses/ apts, old-school style. You might want to drive around neighborhoods you like and take down some numbers.

It's not much, but I have a list called "Queer CA", as does Nadine N., that might give you a few recommendations for queer businesses, restos, and bars in SD.

good luck!

I live in San Diego and I like gays and lesbians.  I see more and more couples holding hands in different locations.  I think that is a good idea.  The more you see that the more it becomes normalized.  And it kind of gets rid of the Hillcrest ghetto effect.  Like, "oh there are gay people in this area too, not just Hillcrest."  When I lived in Clairemont there was a couple that literally let their flag fly everyday.

Suz and I hold hands everywhere. We're going to visit my dad in Arkansas for the holidays. We are not going to hold hands in Arkansas.

Shianne, is that your real name?  What is your gender?  What is your major at CSUC?  What kind of work do you plan to do in San Diego?  Why have you decided to come to San Diego rather than San Francisco?

I had a gay roommate when I lived in OB who then moved to PB trying to find a beach area where he was comfortable living but he didnt feel as comfortable in either location as he did inland a bit (he eventually moved to North Park and loved it). This is not to say people werent tolerant....he never had any problems with anyone harassing him. SD is tolerant but maybe not quite as accepting and open as SF. I would stick to the Hillcrest, North Park, University Heights area. I lived in  PB for a while and even as a straight woman had much more fun living in Hillcrest than I did in PB.

Darling - Hillcrest is where it's at if you're queer. But there are freaking gay flags everywhere in the Hillcrest, North Park, University Heights area. PB and Mission Beach are great if you're into bong hits and getting raped by Mexicans. OB is fabulous if you're looking for Janis Joplin. I think most of the cute lezzies are in the University Heights area - Bourbon Street is there which is pretty much all ladies on Friday nights. You'll love it - and if you play any sports you'll really love it - lots of cute sporty active gay gals here.

SD is definitely a gay friendly city. The gay scene and areas here are a lot more down to earth and friendly compared to places like SF and LA. I live in LA, but I'll take Hillcrest over Castro, WeHo, or Greenwich Village/Chelsea any day of the week. The closest thing that comes into comparison is the gay scene and areas in Vancouver.

I really can't say for sure whether or not SD is LGBT friendly or not.  It seems to vary depending on region.  The Park regions (North Park, South Park, Balboa Park, etc.), SD Downtown, and obviously Hillcrest seem to be pretty accepting.  But it may be a cyclical thing where people move there because they have heard positive things about the area and find that others there have done the same and they tell their friends who then spread the word until another interested party moves there, etc.  It also may have to do with the fact that these are relatively stable and fairly affluent areas.  I do know that we have one of the largest Pride celebrations around, if that is any indication.

I think that the more varied the ethnicity in the region, then the more cosmopolitan and tolerant the place seems to be.  For example, Hillcrest is not only LGBT friendly but ethnically diverse.  Some regions in SD are densely populated with singular minorities and their cultural upbringings may not be as welcoming to an influx of LGBT residents.

It's unfortunate, but SD hasn't quite gotten over its racial hangups (immigration woes, Minutemen demonstrations, past history of Klan activity in the East County, etc.) and anti-LGBT bias can be found if you look for it as well.

I suggest that you check in with the folks at The Center http://www.thecentersd... for their opinion on the subject as they would be far more knowledgeable than I could be.
