Just an observation...it's like...which comes first, the chicken or the egg?  Elites disproportionately get ROTD.  I counted 4 non-elite, non-former elite ROTDs going back a few months.  Does a ROTD (help) get you elite status, or do elites just nominate other elites' reviews for ROTDs?

Just trying to figure out the weird wacky world of yelp-land.

STOP QUESTIONING THE MACHINE.

The secret formula is secret and picking it apart will not help.

But writing the "f" word in reviews won't help you either. My ROTDs have all been f-word free. Beyond that, who knows.

False...at least looking at SF ROTD.  Of the past 40 ROTDs, only 4 were from (currently) non-elites

While ROTDs are given out to everyone in the community, the "Elite" crowd will sometimes tend to write more in-depth, thought out & well-written reviews--which usually got them the "Elite" status in the first place.

Elite? No way, I noticed that ALL ROTD's are usually watered-down positive reviews with cutsey anecdotes. It has nothing to do with "Elite" status. Elites might write more proportionately watered-down cutesy anecdotes about a positive experience somewhere but I think it has to do with the content.

Here is the truth - There are about 10-20 writers on this site that should ROTD everyday or on a rotating schedule the rest of you suck and that is truth.

The questions of Elite / ROTD are many and diverse. It is a enigma that has been pondered since the beginning of Yelp. There has been much debate and discussion in countless threads. Sometimes tempers have flared and harsh words have been spoken.

Earlier this year, a core group of Yelpers, both Elite and Non-Elite got togather to produce a video which clearly answers ALL of the questions surrounding this subject. - http://www.youtube.com...

Now you know.

Obviously they choose entertaining, descriptive, humorous, etc reviews to ROTD-  I don't think Elite has a thing to do with it.

Except with Adrienne, as soon as she got her Elite badge for '08 I began FUC'ing the shit out of her reviews.

03/26/2008 Skunky "have you located my informational paper materials?" G. says:

The honest truth, ROTD machine aside, is that when I got Elite in October 07, I started reviewing like a madwoman because suddenly I had more incentive to do so (they whisper all this stuff in your ear about "the little guys counting on you" etc)...

Now, it MAY also be a coincidence that I also happened to get a smartphone around the same time and ended up doing most of my reviewing during my hideous 3 hour Peninsula - San Francisco commute to and from work, therefore quadrupling my output of reviews, therefore making myself more noticeable on the site, therefore getting more UFCs, therefore increasing my odds of getting ROTD, so on and so forth.

Again, no one knows the formula, and it's probably better that way. While I'm sure some basis lies in number of UFCs, my Peninsula ROTD had like 6/9/6 when I got ROTD and I've seen some that have had 3/4/4 get it.

I'd have to say that sometimes you wonder WHY certain reviews get picked, WHY it *appears* as though the SAME people get ROTD again and again and again but questioning this really doesn't answer the "why" question and just leaves you bitter.

Besides, Yelp isn't about ROTDs.

It's about alcohol and buttsecks. Duh.

Simple formula dude.

Take a Yelp Sponsor (business that gives money to Yelp) and write a 5 STAR review on that Sponsor.
Do note that if that sponsor has had a ROTD, the likelyhood of that place getting another ROTD will be low.

Write a rave review with usefull tips to future patrons and you got yourself a ROTD.

Personally I think
You mention the word Kimchi = ROTD

With 4-5 regions in the Bay Area,  the number of restaurants/businesses that can be given a ROTD is 1825 but there is always duplicates.
