Ok. We have Segways to sport for newcomers to our airport, but when are we going to get a decent Metro system? I'm not asking for D.C.'s beautiful version, but at least something that I won't be scared traveling at night.
And with the onset of Sugar House casino, I can only imagine the Metro getting worse.

Segways? That seems... old now (though still kinda cool if we got our own. Too bad it's expensive =P).
As far as SEPTA goes, I pretty much gave up on them after the constant striking and fare hikes. And it's still not that safe to take the subway at night (you couldn't pay me to take a septa train after 6pm). I dunno, I don't trust public transportation anymore.

I can only speak for using the buses in the center city area (between 38th and 15th street on Chestnut and Walnut). The buses come a lot more frequently here in the city than they do in Boston, so I can't complain. The price for the bus is the same here now as it is in Boston, so Philadelphia is relatively cheap in comparison to other US and worldwide mass transit systems.
The answer to how we can improve the system, is that an entire system wide audit will have to be conducted reducing the 'excess fat' in the system that is causing it to run a deficit every year when it should be breaking even or making some money. From what I've heard, SEPTA is steeped in corruption and nothing is going to change until the system is overhauled. This is easier said than done.
I am going to get a bike soon and I am a member of Philly Car Share. I find it relatively easy to get around the city and haven't ever felt unsafe.
