There is this new show on RIGHT now with Anne Burrell who is Mario Batali's sous chef on Iron Chef.  I was reluctantly excited about this show because I thought that maybe Food Network had finally gotten the idea that a lot of people don't like to cook like Rachael Ray or Sandra Lee. . .

Well. . Anne Burrell has got really weird TV presence.  She flails her hands and arms around (even while having a knife in her hand) and is trying to make up catch phrases a la Le Devil Ray. . .epic fail.  Why can't the producers reign in her flails?  Her weird almost tourette's like . . how can I explain . .she makes these weird tics with her voice. . I don't know. . I guess I was foolishly hoping for more.

Anyone else seen this show?

okay everyone . . i am glad that I am not crazy and/or jealous. . .WHAT is it when she does that gutteral screech?  It's crazy.  She is minus charming. .. plus at the end, she was flailing around and looked like she was in the weeds. . it did not garner confidence in her abilities.  She must have naked pictures of someone at Food Network because I can't believe that a producer would not tell her to tone that shit down.

And while I know that there are probably a million ways to make bolognese, I can't believe she only used ground beef.  .BAH!

let's see. . who could she have naked pics of. . .   :)

The weird voice she uses w/ the words crap, crud, etc. The show is on at 6:30am for a reason. I bet it won't last long. What was up with the Bollywood music? 3 handfuls of salt, and I too could make food that tastes like any chain restaurant.
Not sure if I will every watch again...the 11 year old says "wow, she's weird"!

Everyone has to have their own "personality" or catch phrase apparently. It's the Food Network equation:

Annoying catch phrase+annoying wardrobe or hair+over the top food= the next Food Network star.

I'm switching over to the Travel Channel.

Adzia - it's called 'having an opinion' and yes, we tend to push the envelope but... hello!... that is the nature of the internet - a safe haven from which you can snark anonymously.

Of course we're not carrying a show - we're the intended audience and how we perceive the show (and the rest of the folks that watch... or don't) has a huge impact on whether it survives.

If you can honestly tell me you've never said anything catty about a television/film or other entertainer, I will apologize.  Otherwise, it's time to get off your high horse.  Instead of responding in snotty/catty kind, if you have any vested interest why not actually try to create a dialog?  As snarky as Yelp Talk can be (or any other message board), there are many, many people who are smart and thoughtful.

Believe me, if Ms. Burrell had hit it out of the park I would have been thrilled -- as would many other people who love a truly good show about cooking and food -- REAL cooking.  Food Network has long been a total joke where cooking and techique doesn't matter, but the historical story of gummi bears, does.

------------------------------ ---------------

Yeah, okay, but I don't recall ever trying to get my own television show nor being paid by a network for one.  And if I had, I wouldn't have allowed it to be aired if I were that uncomfortable to watch.  You see normally the network might want to be sure she's more comfortable in front of the camera before they actually put her on the air, assuming they want the show to stick around and all.  They are being paid by sponsors and all for commercials to air and I'm assuming the network and the advertisers actually want people to stick around and watch the show.  No?  I might have "time on my hands" and need to "get a life", but even my time is too valuable to watch someone so obviously uncomfortable as it makes me uncomfortable for her.

I noticed you called us "kids".  Are you Rachel Ray behind that question mark head?  She seems to think it's okay to call people she doesn't know "kids" too.

Rachel is an in the closet Speed freak. I think someone at the network spikes her coffee at the coffee house and at the studio just for her...

And Ann needs to take speech lessons because she is just a normal chef with an almost silent role in Iron Chef as a sous chef for Mario. If anyone, Mark should be with a show. He was wonderful with Anthony Bourdain when Anthony was in New York for a taping of his show. Mutton head anyone? And at a secret chef's floor where only chefs eat.

Nancy - you are the only one to even attempt "a dialog" about the show here.  but how can you have a dialog when the comments are "crazy bitch" and "looks stinky"? not so much "having an opinion" as name calling was my first impression, really a bitchfest. as you see, i'm a total newbie here and you guys totally shocked me. it's true, i don't go on the internet and call people names or make fun of them. it's not high-horse-ish - i just don't get any pleasure out of it.  i know some people say life is high school over and over again but i don't subscribe to it - but it feels like it around here.

i don't like rachael ray but i don't spend time thinking about her or getting annoyed by her or going online to disparage her - i mean, who has the time??? - i just don't watch her show.  but, wait, maybe that's why she's so successful? she polarizes people but, in the end, you guys keep talking about her - good or bad, doesn't matter, as long as there is chatter? in which case, Ann Burrell and her show will do just fine, lol. by the way, yes, i DID like her show, even if she was a bit over the top and still negotiating the camera. i actually did learn something from her. i hope the FN powers that be let her relax into the show, instead of pushing for that entertaining angle.

eeeeeehahahahh, i know you are totally going to have me for breakfast after this, so i'll be kissing you good bye...

I was excited about this show, and after watching The Next Food Network Star, I really thought that they would have worked a little more with Anne Burrell before airing her show. I talk with my hands too, but it was strange seeing this in a cooking show with someone wielding a knife in her hand. The biggest turn off for me though was the using that strange deep voice. I mean, my friends and I will use different accents sometimes when talking, but the gutteral noise she made was off-putting.

Adzia-welcome to Yelp. Can I ask what you are doing bashing folks in a SF Talk thread when it says you are from NY? If we all went around making nice-nice with all TV shows, personalities, etc., we wouldn't be the individuals we strive to be-opinions, pimples, snarkiness and all. BTW, there is a lot of love on these threads too. No one bashed Anne Burrell as a person. We bashed her persona on a new TV show that depends on viewers like us for ratings.

anne burrell should stick with sous chef duties. nothing wrong with that. some people are made to be in front of a camera, some are made to be in the background. not to say she might not learn the trade and become another food network talent, but for now, my opinion, woman, get back in the kitchen and bake me a pie.

This is exactly what I was thinking.  They seem to really do a good job of trying to coach the next foodnetwork star's on being on camera, yet she wasn't anywhere near as comfortable as they teach these contestants to be.  They are doing her a disservice by not helping her get more comfortable before airing her show.  It's too bad as I really liked the idea of the show and was hopeful.  And, it wasn't another Bobby Flay show.

Just a comment, I love the food network channel, however this Anne Burrell is the worst.  SOMEONE SHOULD TELL HER THAT USING THE WORD "CRAP" WHILE COOKING IS DISTASTEFUL AND UNPROFESSIONAL AND UNAPPETIZING.  In every episode I have seen she uses that word.  I am no longer watching her program. Whoever produces her show should be aware.  It is bad enough that Giada's breasts have gotten so large that her show is now distracting as well.  I really am disappointed at the food network channel for selling into "street talk" and "boobs".  What happened to just watching a professional actually cooking?  You need to have more chefs like Bobby Flay, " Molto" Mario, Ina, Nigella, etc.  People who are serious about what they do and not concerned about their "image and ratings".  It is unfortunate that all the new programs you seem to have involve casseroles, mac and cheese, and bbq unhealthy food we can all find receipies to on the side of a box.  I really hope someone in "food network land" really listens to their watchers, however, I am sure this will fall on deaf ears.

Thank you.
