I have some friends who are coming out from colorado on an impromptu road trip, and I don't think either of them have been to northern california before. I haven't lived here long, so I need some help:
they're expecting sun, sand, and warm water. I already informed them that almost all of california is COLD water, but they still insist they want to go to the beach. What is the best beach (and how do we get there) to take them to for sunbathing and maybe wading up to their knees?

Really appreciate any help! I'm at a loss, save for driving to santa cruz, but they really want something within 30 min of Oakland.

Is Stinson Beach too far for you? You are right though, beach does not always include sun.

Wow, warm sunny beach within 30 minutes of Oakland?  You're not asking for much ...  ayiyi

Try the Alameda beach, its usually a bit warmer over there and just a stone's throw from Oakland.  There used to be a big windsurfing thing going on over there.  I'm not an east bay girl but i enjoyed a warm day at the beach there once.  Not in the summer though!

Most all the san fran beaches are freezing.  Muir beach is nice, in the Marin headlands, but no warmer.

Basically you should tell your friends to wise up.  Just because they are "expecting sun" doesn't mean that the San Francisco Bay Area actually has that to offer this time of year... Maybe they should re-read their guidebook or do a simple google search!  Don't stress out over it... When friends come to visit here, you're not required to change the weather -- just change the sheets.

I strongly disagree about the Alameda Beach being a good place to take Out-of-towners. It is disgusting. If you have the time, go to Point Reyes in Marin County. It's absolutely beautiful. I think its like 45 minutes from Berkeley.

Well I haven't been there for about 15 years, but the part I went to was not disgusting at all.  Maybe there is more than one beach in Alameda... its kinda surrounded by water all the way around, isn't it? Kinda like an island?  There must be more than one beach... but like I said, I'm not an east bay girl.

And I think from Oakland to Point Reyes is more like an  hour and 20 minutes, not 45 minutes.  Its over 45 miles of Bay area traffic.

But if they are driving all the way from Colorado, what's an extra half hour or so of driving?

Yeah it's totally disgusting. There aren't any currents since right there so all the garbage people dump in the water literally washes up onto the beach & there's all this nasty foam everywhere.

I think you're right about the time, though; I just mapquested it and it says 1 hour 3 minutes from where I live in Berkeley...but those bitchy hippies from Colorado can suffer through an hour car ride to the beach. Just put on some String Cheese.

That does not describe the beach where I went.  It was beautiful, sunny and clean.  No nasty foam, and I went in the water.  I don't think 15 years could have made that big a difference.  You and I must be thinking of different places entirely.

Stinson or Pt Reyes (Stinson is closer, maybe 45-60 min depending on traffic) are both pretty good options. Beautiful cliff approaches to the beach, so at least you'll have a view even if it isn't super sunny. You can also go for a hike on Mt. Tam on the way.

Max - I went to a beach.  In Alameda.  Where people windsurf.  I don't know if the "official name" of the beach is "Alameda Beach" or not... but it was a pleasant beach, 15 years ago.  Not sure what beach you are thinking of.

Ok, here's the official list of beaches in/around Alameda, from Citysearch.  Just for fun.  The beach I am thinking of is probably officially called Crowne Memorial State Beach. The one with windsurfers.

Alameda Beach
Santa Clara Ave  Alameda, CA 94501  (510) 522-7619

Crown Memorial State Beach
McKay Ave Alameda, CA 94501  (510) 562-7275
Cross Street: Central Avenue
Windsurfers and bay watchers flock to this popular East Bay spot for its warm water ...

South Shore Beach & Tennis Club
901 Shorepoint Ct  Alameda, CA 94501-5891  (510) 521-2801

Hope you have fun with your Colorado friends... there's plenty of nice places to visit with water and sand, not necessarily warm and sunny though!
