Any suggestions for some not so shady bay area casinos?  I've never been to any here (only Reno) and wanted to know if any decent ones exist in the area.  Thanks!

The only one I've been to is Cache Creek, and we had a blast. http://www.cachecreek.com

Buddies of mine go to the Oaks Card Club Casino in Emeryville...I haven't been yet but from the outside it doesn't appear to be shady in any way. It looks like it's nestled comfortably between two shopping centers how seedy could that really be?

I believe the Oaks Card Club, as the name suggests, is strictly cards - no slots, if that's what you want.

River Rock and Cache Creek are about equidistant from SF.  River Rock feels like a bunch of slot machines in a tent (probably because that's what it is, plus a handful of card tables that only play 3-card poker).  Cache Creek is much more Vegas-like and is a great place to stay.  We had a junior suite and it was the best hotel stay I've ever had...hello, personal hot tub!  The casino part is super crowded on weekends, so I'd recommend a mid-week visit.

My friends and i were looking for something more Vegas/casino like with tables and slots.  We tried the Oaks Card Club, but we are novices and didn't wanna upset any of the hard core players at the poker tables.  Isn't there some place off the 580 near Richmond?

I just went to Cache Creek last weekend and yes it's Vegas like but it's seriously in the middle of nowhere and the slots were tight. We left there after an hour and went to Thunder Valley which is right near Roseville. We LOVED it! It's a really nice big clean casino with great service (which was non existent at Cache Creek). And the slots were much looser. all in all I would recommend you driving there for a great Vegas like day trip!

has anyone been to Sho Ka Wah up Mendocino way. I travel that way often and have been pretty anti casino for a couple of reasons...but suddenly thought it would be an interesting experience to check it out. Haven't done it yet, but am interested.

San Pablo Casino (right off 80) now has slots.  I've only been there once, but didn't have a great feeling about the place.  If you want a Vegas-like casino, I'd definitely hit one of the Indian casinos instead, like Cache Creek as someone mentioned.

Liza B:  I've been to Shokawah.  It's pretty small, but I don't see anything wrong with checking it out IF you're in the area.  Otherwise, it's not worth the drive.  River Rock is closer and is similar.

Mandy, if you're a novice poker player, Oaks would be the best place to start. They're the only card club in the Bay Area with a $1/$2 hold 'em game. That means a rack of chips only costs $50 and should last you for a while. I don't play slots, but Casino San Pablo has them. I've heard that they're not Vegas-style slots, but I'm not exactly sure what the differences are. You can smoke in the slot area in San Pablo, and most people do.

It sounds like you want to try an Indian casino. I've been to Cache Creek, but that was back in college. Back then it was basically a bingo parlor with some blackjack tables. Now it's apparently a resort.

Sho-Ka-Wah is worth it just to see the beautiful sculptures.

If you want to play poker, my first recommendation is to play online at FullTilt.com.  If you want a live game, hit:
1. Lucky Chances
2.  The Oaks
3. Casino San Pablo (smoking environment everywhere but poker side and not technically slots- actually BINGO machines)
4. Bay 101

If you want to play the traditional games, go to Tahoe or Cache Creek.
