What's with these ladies of Yelp using the C word in their nicknames?  There must be a reason.  I've always thought that the C word is right up (or down) there with the N word.

Am I missing something or am I just an old fogey?

When I use the word retarded, I use it as it meant to be used -- slow or limited in mental development. I choose my words very carefully. I can think of once I have used the word "retarded" recently and it was in reference to the way people on Yelp sometimes act, or the way people in general act on the Internet. I was not likening people on the Internet to "mentally handicapped" persons but was implying that the internet makes us slow to judgement. I can tell you that in the news business among the AP style, it has been debated for years what words are preferred and in many circles and organizations, "retarded" is preferred over "mentally handicapped" or even "disabled," because "disabled" does not equate to "retarded."

I'm a word person. I can't help it. I find the C Word to be crude, vulgar, just an ugly word and a word that's unnecessary when there are plenty of other non-ugly or crude words for the female bits. Did you know that some of the earliest uses of the word "cunt" appeared as street designations for whores and prostitutes?

I'm heading to bed. But I just want to conclude by saying this: As I believe about religion and political beliefs and all that other junk, people are born with the right to believe and say what they like. In my opinion, words like "cunt" are rude and vulgar and I could go without the word the rest of m life and be all the better for it. But if people want to say words like cunt or the n word or whatever, be my guest. They are on the bottom of the vocabulary chain in my mind and are treated as such.

But it's a free world, where people can say and do what they like. And I'm glad to be in that world. So carry on all you empowered folks :) I'm proud of you for owning it. Just try not to issue those words around me, mmk? Out of respect and stuff.

I still call them paddy wagons...

and as far as "cunt" is concerned, it's a word I find particularly powerful when referring to a particularly offensive man

Never really thought about the offensiveness of "paddy wagon." Only know that cops don't like to be called pigs.

Words evolve over time and have multiple meanings - the context in which you use a term or word, and if you use it properly, is what should be evaluated.

According to the dictionary - and this is just one example - look up retarded, nazi, and the other words for yourself that people get offended by:

Gay means merry, joyous, bright, lively - along with 19 other things - and yes, homosexual is one of them obviously.

I think a lot of people overlook the context of how a word is used and just jump on the PC bandwagon because lawyers and the media have brainwashed you into thinking that you should be offended when you hear certain words.

And when I say "you" - I am not referring to anyone specifically - just people in general.

The thing about words is that for most cases is that we all look at it different. We all get offended with so many different words. For my part I try to respect that but I can't stop or lecture someone else on how to use there words. I can only say Live Free & Live Wild!

Dan, I can only speak for myself, but I get PC when I am or see people offended by the use of a term in a derogatory fashion.  When I hear people use the word gay to imply it is an insult or that there is something wrong with being gay, I will speak up, because I know it hurts people I care about.  I know parents who have retarded children and see how hurt they get when that term is thrown around as well, so I try to curb that when I hear it too.  Maybe I am oversenstive, but I would rather choose another word if I can.
