So I have came to that point that some people call "sad" but I call "adventurous" (lol). Online Dating!
Sick of bars, already run my own http://Meetup.com (Womens Friendship Group), I perform (Dance),  Plus I work full time.. so I kinda would like to take the simple route while I'm already spending hours at my desk in the day. (Yes, I'm lazy)

What better people to ask than YELP! What is up YELPERS?! Online dating.. your thoughts... your experiences... your suggestions.  Match... E Harmony... Craigslist.... Yahoo.... what is up?! Is it worth a shot or fun?

You could try http://Nerve.com if that sites still up.  Never tried eHarmony, but I heard some ppl find men/women they like.  Match is eh, plus I heard they actually send their own people out to date you in order to keep you subscribed longer...messed up eh?

wanna meet a yelper, then keep reviewing and eventually you'll be an elite member.  From there you'll be able to enjoy the cool parties where you can meet other yelpers like yourself.

My vote is Match. There are a lot more men on there and you can see pics and try it out without having paid, where eHarmony won't let you even see pics without being a member which blows. How do you that any of the people on there would be attractive to you.

Does anyone use Lavalife anymore? I always wonder that when I see the ads in the subway but no one ever mentions it in these dating threads.

I was an internet dater for 10 years and used every site (sad, yes, I know): Match, e-harmony, okcupid, JDate, nerve, Yahoo, AOL, JWed, SawYouAtSinai, CrazyBlindDate---not to mention MeetUp and a bunch of other singles social gathering sites.  As a result, I spent a lot of money and have tons of funny stories to tell---and I learned a lot about myself and what I like and don't care for.

People are on those sites for lots of different reasons and you have to hope that someone who's wanting the same thing you're in search of is on there at the same time as you.

Early this year, my frustration came to a head and I knew I had to do something to change things...so I joined Facebook and very unlike me, added every dating app I could find---including Flirtable.  Right after adding it, I clicked on a guy, sending him a flirt (which I didn't know that's what happened if you clicked on them!!!).

That was February 10th and we've been together ever since and are extremely happy.  He's everything I was looking for and I can't believe I found him, on Facebook no less!

Good luck, Lexy!  I know how tough it is and I wish you well---just maximize your options! :)

E-harmony makes you take a test that takes over an hour, then tells you your "results," basically pointing out what the computer  thinks your flaws are from tons of word-association questions. Then after ripping you to shreds, it pairs you up with other people who had the patience to complete the friggin' test and who's flaws are "compatible" with yours. I did the free trial ages ago and lasted two weeks. WAY too intense.

Perhaps you should open yourself up to Yelp and other possibilities, and like Vic says, write some reviews! Good luck.

Sara's description of her eharmony experience pretty much matches my own. But on the up side, you're only going to meet people who had the patience (or lack of other ways to spend their time) to go through the whole thing as well. I know two people who are happily married to people they met on eharmony. I don't know anyone else married to anyone they met through a dating site.

From a design perspective though, the eharmony profile tests are horrible. Or at least were 3 years ago, maybe someone finally pointed out to them that their scales shouldn't randomly flip. That's not how you randomize a test.

So Lexy, did this thread get you any bites from lonely yelpers?
Dating sites aren't really a great place to meet platonic friends.
Is that really what you want Lexy?
The guys who pay money to be on those sites are mostly looking for some combination of sex, and a girlfriend.
If you meet someone off a dating site expect guys to think they're on a date.
OkCupid, Craigslist, Facebook.... it's a little let overt then Match or Eharmony.

I have a profile up currently on match, I've been on a few dates with some decent guys, but there was no chemistry, so they didn't go far. There was this one weirdo I met this past winter who actually wore UGGS on the date! It took all the self control I had not to crack up in his face.

Craigslist guys are pretty interesting, most of them just want an NSA relationship but I met some great guys from there who I'm still friends with. I actually dated a hot chef from CL for a few months, and I met my best friend from it also. We dated for a bit, I broke up with him, and he still wanted to be friends, so now we're really close.

Eharmony- I wasn't rejected but only had a membership for about a month cuz a relative of mine felt that I should settle down soon. LMAO. I was matched with ppl waaay older than me, or they were something like, "6 months clean & sober". Sorry, but I likes my booze!

I met my SO on-line...we are both exec level professionals who work a ton of hours, so the internets stuff seemed to work for us.

Given my crazy schedule, I tried every dating option under the sun and I met many more realistic, quality, and honest people online than I did in other venues (friends, bars, social groups, etc.).  Sure, I met my share of moon bats and assorted loons, but my most memorable "Dates from Hell" stories have been from sources other than online.

And I have numerous friends and acquaintances who met their long-term SO or spouse online.

As to the dating sites, most folks we know went down the http://Match.com path.   Almost everyone I know that tried E-Harmony either got bounced or had bad experiences.

However, when dating online or in real life, you still find the liars and whatnot. Hahaha. Its' much easier to lie online than in person. I met a dude whose profile said he wasn't into drugs and he had a car. Nope. He has no car and he does weed, coke, and ecstacy. And on top of that, he is an alcoholic and doesn't even have a job!  Lol. I met other people who were more level headed but just be aware that what you see online is not always what you get.

I'd do http://match.com vs. e-harmony, but beware of the following:
1. People who only have 1 or 2 pictures up- especially if they look grainy and old, like they were scanned in.  Also, make sure they are smiling (like showing teeth) in at least one.
2. Guys who look different in every picture they have up.  (I know this sounds shallow, but the number 1 problem I've had with online dating is visual misrepresentation!)  When you talk to them on the phone before meeting up (which I highly recommend), ask them how recent their pictures are.  Trust me- anything over a year is suspect.
3. Guys who say they are on http://match.com just looking for "friends" and then see what happens.  This means they want a f* buddy, and they're willing to pay a monthly fee for it.
4. I personally pay very close attention to the way a profile is written.  If there are grammar and spelling errors everywhere, it means they couldn't even take time on their dating profile, so they wil probably show that type of carelessness with how they treat you!  (And it also puts their intelligence into question...)
Good luck- it's rough out there!

UPDATE:

So I did the free trial on http://Match.com and canceled right away!!! (lol)

In only a matter of 24 hours, I had 20 winks, 15 messages and found an ex-boyfriend, 2 guys I dated, a coworker that is married but listed as single and 3 girlfriends who secretly had profiles and never told me!  WHEW! Crazy-ness!

I came to realize that in my opinion http://Match.com is definitely more of a "for fun" dating site and used by many guys as an easy way of hooking up with multi girls. If your just looking to casually date or hook up then I think http://Match.com is a great way of going about it... but knowing the STD rate in NY these days... I think I might try a diff route. Ha-

I also Joined E-Harmony... have not paid yet. I honestly like how E-Harmony takes the time to match you with someone who is more like yourself and guys can't go cruising around for a hot chick to stalk. Or vice versa.

I figured if a guy takes the time to actually fill this thing out and has paid to be apart of E-Harmony that he overall might actually be a genuine guy (or so I hope). I'm going to wait till the Holiday Season passes and I can focus more time on reading about my matches on E-Harmony before I pay.

I just plain out don't feel like buying someone new a Christmas Gift yet. ;o)

Don't you read the yelp STD threads? 1 in 4 NYC residents has the herpes, and new HIV infection rates are something like double in NYC what they are in the rest of the country. It's like New Yorkers have a lot of unprotected sex or something.

I close about 95% of its matches, and now it matches me with someone like once a week now, I rarely bother signing on there anymore.   puckerup is the way to go, not only are the people better looking, the profiles are more interesting to read.

I have tried Nerve/Salon, Match, eHarmony, and Yahoo Personals over the past 10 years or so. I have had a few nice dates and one semi-long relationship (10 months). I haven't run into anyone who was misrepresenting herself, either in terms of appearance or facts about her life.

But I will say this: I don't know if it's me or if it's the medium (online dating), but I seem to always end up on dates with women who cannot stop talking about themselves or their lives. I mean, I'm not the most fascinating person on the planet, but I do like to be involved in the conversation beyond simply nodding every five minutes and going "Uh-huh. Really? Wow." Anyone else run into this phenomenon with online dates? Is the medium self-selective that way--does it draw primarily closet narcissists?

Living in New York makes it diff to date for various reasons, but it forces you to get over your ego and diversify your options. The goal is Love and Happiness, so most folks get crazy militant with it  "by any means necessary!"

seems to me anything that puts people together will work given the probability. that's why you hear all the success stories, those one in a millions, because that's what they are. not great odds. what i've found is cyberdating can lead to very good cyber relationships that have very little bearing on the reality of when the two people are in the same room. if you want something in the physical realm, there's no other way than you have to deal with the bodies. we may like to think it's all about our thoughts and checklists and such but we're not really wired that way. ALL the senses have to come into play.

I vacillate between giving up on the chance that I will ever meet Miss Right through one of these sites and thinking, Well, it's better to have a profile and have it active and potentially be out there than not to be out there. Right now, I'm at the giving-up-hope end of the spectrum.

Glad you met Mr. Right, Lexy! Congrats! Though, a coffee shop encounter sounds random. I've been going to restaurants and bookstores alone for years and never once hooked up with anyone that way. Do you care to share the details on how it happened?

Ok.. How Lexy met her New York Prince

On a rainy hump day I walked into a coffee shop on Park Ave to treat myself to a latte in the afternoon when I was able to escape from work. Stand in line, order my coffee, pick up my coffee and walk over to the "Milk & Sugar Station" to spice it up. As I'm pouring & mixing a super handsome man with salt & pepper hair is also pouring & mixing next to me. I look over at him and notice he has a name tag with his company name, my company actually works with his company (TV is a big but small industry). I make a comment about his name tag, he looks over and smiles... he paused for a second and just looked into my eyes and I totally felt blushed and focused back on my coffee. He asked me where I worked, we smiled a bit more and he asked me if I come here often for coffee and hopefully we could meet there again. He handed me his card and I walked out.

2 days later I called him, we had dinner... and 3 months later... Im head over heals and couldn't be more lucky.

Damnit NY! Your suppose to be full of assholes and doosh-bags, now look what you done to the CUPCAKE QUEEN! ;o)

Monica, I just meant that even though I'm not religious, and the questions eHarmony asks you tend to lean toward religiosity, I was still matched up with some compatible people, including the yearlong on/off relationship. I have no stake in eHarmony; just an observation. In fact, of all the dating sites, eHarmony is probably the most frustrating, because you can't browse beyond what you are sent by the site in terms of matches. If you don't like the matches, you have to wait for the next batch of matches to be sent to you. That's frustrating and makes you wonder why you're paying $60 a month (I think that's what it was last time I was active).

Dating is hard.

Personally speaking, I'm sure if I had used a dating website that involves complex questionnaires and algorithims, I woulda never found my SO - that's how philosophically/politically/re ligiously different we are. Sheltered republican farm boys from PA are rarely looking for jaded apathetic girls from NYC. Instead, I answered a free CL ad looking for someone to drink beer and watch Futurama with...and almost 2 years later we still do this.

I probably have less time than most of you, but I still believe in going out and meeting people out in the open.  Not just bars, join a sports team, throw an apartment party and invite friends to invite friends, go join a book club or something, anything that gets you out of the apartment and exposes you to people will get  you to where you want to be.

The thing that pisses me off is how stuck up people are in NYC, its ridiculous.  Not that im the friendliest guy in the world, but I am very extroverted (like Oriana and others on yelp) so get that stick or vibrator out of your ass and talk to people!  At the end of the day its a probability game, the more you try the more youll suceed.

I joined yelp and met cool ass people, I joined zogsports and im sure ill meet cool as people, I went on a ski trip and met cool people, I went to a private wine tasting and was 1 of two guys there (guys take note lol).  Thats all it takes, giving people a chance, hear their story because they all have one.
