I'm trying to plan a wedding for October 2008 and  I'm looking for a venue to have the ceremony and reception (in one). I was thinking somewhere in CT, Northern NJ or Northern NY area --some place that embraces the outdoors in one way or the other (i.e. country club, botanical garden, estate, etc)...200-250 people.  Anybody know of something fun/cool I should check out?  I really appreciate it!!

Actually, I have a few suggestions... I go to a lot of weddings.  This past weekend I went to a wedding in Clifton, NJ at the Valley Regency and it was beautiful (ceremony was held in the garden, reception was held inside with an large adjoining deck).  On Long Island I like Coindre Hall in Huntington (ceremonies are usually on the front lawn and the reception is held inside the house on the premises) and the Vanderbilt estate (ceremony is usually held on the great lawn and receptions are usually held under a tent).

I don't know pricing for the Valley Regency but I'm under the impression that Coindre is pretty affordable and the Vanderbilt is very expensive.

A good friend of mine got married here http://www.vineyardcat.../  It is on LI, which doesn't exactly fit your parameters, but it's a good spot nonetheless.

I've visited around 20 venues in Northern NJ to choose one for my Sept. wedding (I don't recommend doing this). It really depends on your budget, but here are a few that fit your profile:

Stirling Ridge
50 Stirling Road, Warren, NJ
http://www.stirlingrid...
Pros: Modern, chic, cabin-y, in the woods.
Cons: Expensive, There must be a skeet shooting park nearby - we kept hearing gunshots.

Westmount Country Club
728 Rifle Camp Road, West Paterson, NJ
Pros: Really elegant decor, nice grounds
Cons: Booked through winter

The Castle at Skylands Manor - (Ringwood, NJ)
http://www.frungillo.c...
Pros: It's a CASTLE in the mountains. BEAUTIFUL.
Cons: A bit far from Manhattan, scary windy roads to drive at night

Pleasantdale Chateau - (West Orange, NJ)
http://www.pleasantdal.../
Pros: Beautiful gardens, Great food
Cons: Expensive

The Estate at Florentine Gardens
http://www.florentineg.../
Pros: Really nice exterior, well kept gardens, etc.
Cons: Interior is generic

Hope that helps - Good luck!

Friends of ours got married at the Bear Mountain Inn -- just before Christmas.  They had both the ceremony and the reception there.  The place was amazing -- they had a Christmas Tree up in front of the Inn, the surounding mountains / hills were beautiful to look at.  They have these great HUGE fireplaces in the Inn and they really get roaring fires going.  It was truly beautiful.  Check them out here:

I bet during the fall (my favorite time of year), that the place would be amazing as well, with the fall leaves, etc.

A couple of friends god married at the Tides in North Haledon NJ so I decided to check it out, and I liked it price very reasonable!!! and I have 150 guest, they have 2 rooms, we chose the bigger one and the part that I most like is that the cocktail hour is connected to the gardens that btw beautiful!!!
Also Valley Regency is beautiful!!! but way too expensive, last year they want it charge us $135 per person not including tax or gratuity insane!!!!!! way too much money, especially when at least for me, the most important thing is not to spend too much on our wedding, instead spend the money to buy our dream house :-)..

There's two venues at the NY botanical garden. One is called Snuf Mill and it's on the Bronx river. This was the 2nd choice for our wedding.

I just went through this myself, plus grew up in NJ and have been to weddings just about everywhere.  I want to echo the suggestions of Highlawn Pavillion, Pleasantdale Chateau and another venue owned by the same folks in the same area, the Manor, in West Orange, where I had my sweet 16.  All are gorgeous places with outstanding food, my favorite being the Highlawn Pavilion.  If you choose a Sunday, you can get a great rate there.  My cousin Masha got married there and she didn't have a lot of money, and the wedding was glorious.

Skylands is another great suggestion.  I went to a co-worker's wedding at Florentine Gardens.  Like it says above, the gardens are nice, the interior is a yawn and so is the food.  Finally, Bear Mountain is a gorgeous place for a wedding.  They just finished a complete renovation a few years ago, and the location is wonderful.

Wave Hill would have been my choice for a wedding, but you need to make a donation to their annual fund to get the space (it's a nonprofit) and it exceeded my budget, but may fit within yours.  My sister and her husband just went to a fall wedding there and they still haven't stopped talking about it.

Finally, if you don't mind driving, the same sister above had her wedding at the Hall of Springs within the state park in Saratoga Springs. This was a fairy-tale wedding.  The location is perfection, the food was wonderful, the whole place is breathtaking and it was a real adventure for the whole family to take a little trip.  The Gideon Putnam is a large old hotel within the grounds that is walking distance through the park to the venue.  It's really not that far--maybe 2 hours--and well worth the trip.  Their wedding was about 130 people but the hall can hold 250 easily and comfortably.

There are lots of other places, but I think these are great suggestions.
