Lately I've been supplanting my need for a summer vacation with travel to the outer boroughs in search of interesting food...last weekend saw a trip up to Keur Sokhna in Harlem's Little Senegal (
http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and on Sunday I had the pleasure of eating Ali's fabulous home cooking at Kebab Cafe on "Egypt Row" in Astoria.
So what's next? Where do you travel with your metrocard for a dinner abroad?

Becca "The thinking man's crumpet" S. says:
Jeff, I can't tell if you're kidding or not. I hope so.
Chris, I've always wanted to check out Arthur Ave in the Bronx for what's supposed to be great authentic Italian. Also, Sunset Park in BK for Latin food, and Brighton Beach for Polish/Russian. Pierogies!

Steph G. says:
Venture out to Tanoreen in Bay Ridge! Incredible middle eastern food, but so far from everything! We turn our tanoreen trips into adventures by taking zip cars and cruising around BK, but the R will take you there too!
Also, little italy in the bronx! 4/5 brings you to some of the best italian fare in the city

Steph G. says:

vicki "TGIF" M. says:
christopher that is a cool idea. the furthest i usually go is smith street which is a ten minute walk from my house.
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
vicki, it's time to hop on the train! although the big problem with long train trips for dinner is falling into a food coma on the way back and missing your stop. it's happened before...
07/24/2008
vicki "TGIF" M. says:
oh i lied. i've been to coney island for hot dogs. it was good.

I keep wanting to try one of the Indian-style Chinese restaurants in Jackson Heights (Chili Chicken, for example), but I think more for the novetly then anything else. I can't imagine they're all that great.
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
hey beardy, hadn't heard about that style of cooking...is it food from a borderland province? Could be good though...Sichuan baked lamb with cumin spice rub is amazing...and tastes kind of indian.
07/24/2008
daniel m. says:
We went to two places.. One place only serves pork.. Its over the top amazing: Tong Sam Gyup Goo Ee Korean Restaurant
And the other has the best Galbi I have ever tasted.. These two places are amazing! Ga Si Ri
07/24/2008
daniel m. says:
You know who does a good Cumin Lamb.. Little Pepper in Flushing..
07/24/2008
Matt "The Beardy Dude" L. says:
It's not border food; apparently India is as saturated with Chinese restaurants as the U.S. is (my sister is actually traveling the country now, and, according to her, they'r ubiquitous, even in small villages nowhere near the border). I think it's a comfort thing for the South Asian community in Queens, which is why I don't expect it to be all that exciting.

Lori S. says:
Umberto's on Arthur Avenue, or Mike's deli..it's inside a market and you eat on picnic tables, but the food is amazing...
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
hmm, sounds interesting nonetheless...would that be kind of like us going to a Japanese restaurant for hamburgers and spaghetti? i remember there being an article on this in the Times a while back--that really adventurous diners can try eating their own specialties reinterpreted by foreign cuisine.

If you want to try an really interesting restaurant in Manhattan and its BYOB, go to Sigiri.. Its food from Sri Lanka.. Its pretty amazing..
Chinese Indian in Manhattan is called Chinese Mirch... I found the food to be horrible..

daniel m. says:
The restaurant is called Chinese Mirch

I spent a week in Miami two years ago, and I've been trying to find a Nicaraguan restaurant in New York ever since. That's good stuff...
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
damn, how could I have missed Sigiri? I walk by there every day on the way to work...amazing the things you miss in New York. I'll have to hit that up when I don't want to ride the train...
Don't think I'll be checking out Mirch, but maybe beardy will.

Fabian "is down with the P.E." T. says:
Hit Sheephead Bay for seafood galore. Nick's for Lobsters, Clemente's for all-you-can-eat Maryland Crabs, and Jordan's clam shack. All within walking distance of each other.
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
hey Fabian, thanks. Maybe I can get a pierogie for appetizer and then hit up the seafood...or seafood first and vodka for dessert?

daniel m. says:
There is a Nicaraguan man who married a women from El Salvadore and they opened a Central American Restaurant in Elizabeth NJ.. The name of the restaurant is Guananica I believe.. The food is good and though its not entirely Nicaraguan, there are some really super dishes there..

Preeti "Smeeti" B. says:
While I agree that Chinese Mirch is really not that great and really just a convenient location, many people find Tangra Masala in Elmhurst to be a very different story. Damn good. Matt - I have both traveled and worked in India and I do agree that "Indian Chinese" food is a cultural phenom in India as "Chinese food adapted with Indian spices and flavors to serve Indian taste buds." While I'm sure it is comforting to the S.Asian community, it is a pretty unique flavor, when prepared well, it might offer a new experience or at the very least better than expected. Should you decide to try TM, some of the best dishes include: anything sizzling, Manchurian, and lollypop chicken
Chris, as another option: My native Indonesian co-worker says that the best Indonesian restaurant in the city is "Upi Jaya" also located in Elmhurst
07/24/2008
Christopher "Cristof Jameson III" I. says:
hey Preeti, thanks for the heads up...I don't think I've ever had Indonesian food. Malaysian yes--but one of the reviewers for Upi Jaya said it's a bit different. Good pick! Maybe a one-two punch with Tangra Masala.
ryan-thanks, didn't know what mofongo was till I looked it up just now. I'm getting really hungry. And I just ate...
07/24/2008
daniel m. says:
Ming in Edison NJ is another Indian Chinese Restaurant.. Not that good in my opinion.. But thanks for Tangra Masala.. Will have to go..

We got married at Tatiana in Brighton Beach. The food there is incredible. It's well worth the schlep.
07/24/2008
Preeti "Smeeti" B. says:
oh and RE: Arthur Avenue
Dominicks and Emelias are good. Arthur Ave is especially worth the schlep, if you enjoy the freshly rolled cigar..... puffity puff!!
07/24/2008
daniel m. says:
Roberto's and Mike Deli are two reasons to go to Arthur Ave.. Another one is the pizza place Zero Otto Nove

Jessica "furious fingers" F. says:
I've never had a bad meal. We had the Special Russian Banquet at our wedding. The menu for it is on the Tatiana website and there wasn't a bad thing on it. People are still emailing us about the food and the wedding was two months ago. Any fish or chicken dish is going to be good. The lambchops were insanely good. Every appetizer is delicious. Their mixed seafood salads are great-there is a mussel dish with melted cheese that sounds gross but had people moaning with delight. Just ask your waiter and you won't be disappointed.

Go to City
search.com and then put in type of food you want and location you are looking for. It will tell you where you can go and then you can read the write ups for how good it is, price service and such almost like zagits but you don't have to pay for it/

You have to try Sri Pra Phai in Woodside Queens. It is the best Thai restaurant in New York.
