I'm a Boston native..but I love NY- I'm not a Yankees fan- But I LOVE  the circa 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers-the greatest basball team in history.
I like the Boston Red Sox, as its my hometown team- but avoid Fenway Park like the plague, as the hardcore Red Sox fans are the most obnoxious people I've ever met- Last year I was on the subway in Boston and felt awful, as I overheard some visiting New Yorkers speak in astonisment at how vile and rude the Sox fans were to them- sadly they concluded all Bostonians are that way- many of them are, not all though- The 'Massholes'  as we call them are more of a product of the arrogant  New England provincial mindset, as opposed to being just a Boston thing....
But I'll tell you this- people claim New Yorkers are unfriendly? What a load of crap!-New Yorkers are very direct and very honest-certainly nicer than many of the people in my city.
My brother and his family have seen games down in Yankee Stadium, and New Yorkers were always very kind and gracious to them- Never once a problem. But they told me that in Fenway park, they cringe when they see the local yokles taunting, and at times threatening New Yorkers that are in the stands, trying to enjoy the game...I love baseball, live in Boston, but refuse to go to Fenway park.
When you've encountered Red Sox fans- did they treat you with the respect any fellow human deserves, or were they total jerks?  I really wish the hardcore Sox fans  could lighten up-They suck all the fun out of the game for me-Know what happned in Boston when the Sox won the series? They destroyed everything-overturned cars, knocked down streetlights, etc..
Perhaps this is one reason I plan to leave Boston for NY, the greatest place on Earth- If only Brooklyn had kept the Dodgers though!

Peace

i am a hardcore Red Sox fan and most of us are certainly not rude and obnoxious. I really think it has to do with age, because i'm quite sure that most of the "Massholes" are, what, males in their 20's and 30's who tend to get really drunk at games, thus are very belligerent during games? Yeah, those arseholes are the ones I hate and give us in The Nation a bad name.

but like i said, a majority of red sox fans are extremely cool. So are most Yankee fans when I goto Yankee Stadium with my red sox cap on. They're polite and very baseball-knowledgeable. but there are those assholes who will shout at you from three sections away, saying go back to Plymouth Rock and such.

i like the yankees. i've never been to fenway park. when i was in the yankee stadium bleachers a few weeks ago, i went with yankee fans and 1 red sox fan. we talked to yankee fans and red sox fans in the bleachers. but oh many of those 'bleacher creatures' needed their mouths washed out with soap. at least 3 were ejected by the cops. if it were up to me, i would have ejected many more. the cops would walk within 8 feet of rowdies and stare them down. (icey stares!) .....i was with 2 of my cousin's in-laws from arizona (an " on-the-quiet-side-kind-o f-classy" young couple who claimed to be yankee fans. i think they don't watch a lot of sports. they probably work a lot.) and i felt so embarrassed by the potty mouths who were being tres rude to most of the red sox fans just for the h*ll of it. they didn't bother the 1 red sox fan in our troop probably cuz we set an "aura" or "force field" around us.

I think that the abuse Yankee fans give Red Sox fans at Yankee stadium amounts to good natured ribbing compared to the other way around.  In 1999 at a Yankees/Red Sox game I was told by the man behind me that I had a big mouth for a little girl and that if I didn't shut up he'd give me something to yell about and I am not a particularly verbal fan, I'm really just a cheer-er.  Of course that's an extreme case, but I've just never seen that kind of hosility at Yankee stadium.

Also, it's really hard to get a cab in a Yankees cap out there.

I can't stand Yankee, Red Sox or Pats fans one way or the other.  First thing - if you walk into my apt with any Yankee gear you're taking it off.  Second - everything was all fun and giddy when the Sox/Pats weren't winning.  I actually went to school in NE and rooted for the Grogan-led Pats when they still had cool uni's.  Now I can't stand the supposed "fans."   If you ask me the problem with all 3 teams now is the bandwagon effect (or is it 'a'ffect?  I can never tell).  Anyway, when a team starts winning, you get all the yahoo's blabbering about how great their team is.  So the gist of my rant is that they all suck nuts.  I can't stand em and will be rooting (at least in the AL) for the Mariners!

New Yorkers treat people with Boston baseball caps much better here than people in Boston treat people with New York baseball caps there.  In fact, a lot of people who live here sport Boston hats...it's being "alternative".  NOBODY in boston just decides to be a Yankees fan to be "different."

Boston is a little city (570,000 people) and is obsessed with its hatred of New York, especially from a sports perspective.

New York is a world city (8 million people) and doesn't really notice Boston in particular, even from a sports perspective.

CBM - way, way, way off.

- Um, wrong. No native NYer wears a Boston hat to be alternative. There are many transplants to NY from other parts of the country and world and they all become Yankees fans, which is natural. But no one here decides to be a Red Sox fan. The only Red Sox fans here were fans before they got here. Those people with the hats have moved down from Boston.

Boston is a little city (570,000 people) and is obsessed with its hatred of New York, especially from a sports perspective.

- Boston is not at all obsessed with its hatred for NY. Tons of people from Boston move here, or just come to visit. We have a sports rivalry like any sports rivalry.

New York is a world city (8 million people) and doesn't really notice Boston in particular, even from a sports perspective.

- NY notices Boston from a sports perspective. Yankees v. Red Sox is widely considered the greatest rivalry in sports. The Yanks recently spent $50G to remove a David Ortiz jersey from the foundation of their new stadium. I think that qualifies as taking noitce.

We have one Mets fan on our team who used to be Kaz Matsui's interpreter/translater for the Mets. He said Pedro Martinez has the biggest dong on the team. He wasn't trying to look, but it was like an elephant in the room.

As a diehard Red Sox fan, I admit, I own a Yankees Suck tshirt.  But granted, I bought it while in high school, and haven't worn it in years.

It's mostly the ya doods that make both Red Sox AND Yankees fans some of the most hated fans in all of baseball.  I came to NYC a few years ago, wore my Red Sox hat all weekend, and no one ever said anything.  In fact, while at the top of the Empire State Building, one of the guys that worked there said he was a Red Sox fan.  I'm embarrassed by a lot of stupid Red Sox fans, especially bandwagon fans that decided to become fans after the Red Sox started to win.  But I think it goes both ways.  There was certainly an influx of Yankees fans everywhere since they were winning so much before.

Granted, I hate the Yankees, but I have friends that are Yankees fans as well.  If I ever heckle, it's all in good fun, and I would never do anything to hurt anyone, even if they are Yankees fans.  It's certain types of Red Sox AND Yankees fans that tarnish the reputation of all fans....

The Dodgers' rivals back then were the same rivals they have now-- the Giants.

The Dodgers-Giants rivalry is one of baseball's oldest rivalries, and if I'm correct, the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants moved out of NY the same year. And that's why the Giants are called the Jints, because no one in California actually has that accent.

Cubs-Cardinals (St Louis Browns/White Stockings) and Dodgers-Giants rivalries date from the 1880s. Yankees/Red Sox rivalry dates from the very early 20th century in the Highlanders/Americans days, but you can attribute it to a number of factors, including the sale of Babe Ruth in 1919. I think it goes both ways.  I grew up in MA and went to school in Boston and have lived out here for 7 years.  I go to Yankee stadium everytime the Red Sox are in town, and the fans are mostly decent with a couple exceptions.  When the Yanks are winning in a blow out you can count on some jeering (not all of it good natured) from the drunker crowd members.  If you're completely decked out in Red Sox gear chanting "Jeter Sucks!" you WILL get a reaction and probably some food or drink thrown at you.  In which case you kind of brought it on yourself.  I would say the same rules apply to Yanks fans in Fenway.  If the Red Sox are having a good year, you can count on more Red Sox fans in Yankee stadium and less jeering.  If college is in session, you can count on a higher number of Yankee fans in stands.

I live pretty far down in Brooklyn and always thought of it more as Mets territory, but I always seem to get a reaction when I wear Red Sox gear.  During the 2003 season I was wearing a Pedro Martinez shirt to go pick up a pizza I ordered and got a "F_ck You" in what amounted to a 3 block walk.  A couple months ago I was wearing my Sox hat while shopping at Circus Fruits and an agitated 50 year old woman asked me "what's up with the Red Sox hat?"  She was nice about it though when I explained I grew up there and was not a defector.  Think most people understand the loyalty thing.

You do seem to see a lot more hats around NYC these days.  Used to be the only people here who would wear the hats were of Dominican Republican heritage.  I lived in Boston when Pedro first came to town and those guys would show up in force for his starts.  I sat next to the guy who used to wear the Yoda mask and bang the drum during his starts one game.  It was awesome.  Since Manny and Ortiz have come aboard, I think the Red Sox will continue to be the team people from the DR support.  I'm not sure if it is still like it was in the late 90's but the DR community totally revitalized the fan atmosphere at the games.  I get the feeling with tickets being as hot as they are in Boston they have been pushed out by a lot of the corporate ticket/ Masshole element.
