Hope it's okay to ask for another suggestion:
My family wants to spend the day tomorrow with me in LA or OC for my birthday and take me out to dinner. But, I'm really only craving SPICY BEEF NOODLES like "neu row mein" in Mandarin or "Hong siu ghnow yuk mein" in Cantonese....
My favorite used to be A&J in Irvine because it was quality beef/tendon, soup was good, and the noodles were Hand-made. Now A&J sucks because they got cheap.
Yelpers, do you know of another great place to try? Especially with fresh hand-made noodles?

I got your spicy beef noodle right here, baby
that's so wrong - sorry Jacqueline
Happy early b-day, chicky

hahhahaa...Ed, you're so funny.....
I've been to Sinbala...it's okay....What's the difference between mandarin Noodle and Ding's?
Also, if it's a really gheto place, the better...

This place called China Islamic in Rosemead or whatever, somewhere in the SGV, off Garvey near New, I think. Not only is it good (and not super oily) but they're the only place in LA that I know of that serves the hand cut dough sliced noodles. My pinyin is awful so I'm not even going to try. Whatever you do, don't try to order the pork there though.

Happy Birthday Jacqueline!
There's also Noodle House in Arcadia

Mandarlin Deli is some highly over-rated shit, overcooked noodles, bland soup, horrendous service on weekends. And it's not even spicy!
previous hand pulled noodle thread:
http://www.yelp.com/to...i'd surmise all the hand pulled noodle joints serve niou rou mien.
NRM thread on Chowhound:
http://www.chowhound.c...quite frankly, i don't know of a single NRM with hand-made noodles that's truly spicy. it's a shame.

Pete S. says:
Shawn R-I know the owner of Chinese Islamic cuz I've been to all of their locations, they don't have beef noodle soup.
Personally, I like Earthen for the beef noodle soup and pancakes.....just not the wait.

Tina and I are still doing it, probably in April. A yelper did offer us his home to throw it, but I haven't really thought about it. My mind is on the snow :D
Besides, Jacqueline needs a place by tomorrow! Shuana, where have you had really good beef noodle soup?
02/15/2008
Mike L. says:
Mandarlin Noodle Deli in Temple City or Mandarlin Noodle House in Monterrey Park are both pretty good. Dai Ho in Arcadia is getting some support. If you want to go cheap, there's a food court in Rowland Heights called Noodle King that is good for neu low mein. Hope you do find a good place for tomorrow.
Happy Birthday Jacqueline!

re: challenge, do a search on yelp pot luck.

Dai Ho is better for their dan dan mien. Open during lunch only.

Sadly, Juma, I don't usually order spicy beef noodle soup. At least, I haven't had a good one in years. The bowl I had last week doesn't count (food court in Dowtown!). They did ask me what level of spicy did I want it which immediately nixed it from being great. Decent broth though.

Wilbur "Meeeooow" L. says:
judy, i have not had any good NRM in a long time. the last time i had it, it was at young ho tou jiang....it was ok.....and the previous time was up north at A&J in the san jose-ish area, now that was good. i wonder how good it is at indian? hmm. =)
02/15/2008
j u m a. says:
Mike did you try the NRM at Noodle House in Arcadia? Frederick says it's really good. I've only had their do jiang breakfast.
Shauna, do I smell a NRM crawl? :D
Tony, Simbala's NRM is actually spicy, but the beef cuts aren't all that, and yes, the noodles are over cooked. still good enough to eat though

Shauna "Vodka is still my #1 lover" D. says:
OMG, Juma, I don't know! I am not sure I can eat that many bowls of noodles in one day! Maybe multiple events like Amador's ramen run.

I read about that place Elizabeth. hm? but if I go to the south bay, it'll be for Nippon noshing!
Wilbur, beer and beef noodle soup? Indian is more for their stir fry, bbq, beer house stuff eh

i've heard good things about Sue's Kitchen... Monday post-work UYE one of these days after some korean tung dalk...
juma.. if a bowl of NRM has 2 strikes against it, i'm not gonna bother. it's pretty simple concept: good broth, good noodle, good beef. the rest (chin gang cai / spinach, pickled mustard greens, scallions, etc.) is accessorial.
i have to put in a vote for either Mama's on New Ave, or Kam Hong on Garvey. Both have great GREAT noodles, both have decent broth with Mama's being a bit lacking on the meat front. Also, considering Kam Hong's cook has worked in Taiwanese restaurants for the last 10 years, i'd give the win to Kam Hong. N.B.: neither are Taiwanese.
judy w should chime in...

Hey Juma, no I haven't really tried their lunch stuff at Noodle House. I only go there for Breakfasts only because I am only willing to spend $5 there on every single trip. LOL
02/15/2008
j u m a. says:
oh no you did-n't! Tony, the last time I was at mama's jia, she was wondering why we weren't eating her NRM and she said herself it wasn't very popular. We didn't tell her, but the reason why we didn't eat it was because it was rancid! see my mama's kitchen review. I like Sinbala's NRM way more than Mama's, although mama hand makes her noodles. Never been to Kam Hong
02/15/2008
Shawn R. says:
Pete S - If that's the case, what have I been eating all these years? We're probably not talking about the same place, the sign says "China Islamic" and they've got only one location.
02/15/2008
Jacqueline "And then the ICE AGE was OVER" C. says:
And I was beginning to think there weren't a lot of places for NRM....
Tony, I have been to Sue's Kitchen so I'm glad there's one nearby that I will go when I really crave it but they need better noodles.
Judy, Thanks for working so hard to get some good places...I'm making a list and reading reviews tonight... what a great Friday night... Can you imagine NRM served after snowboarding? Man, they totally need to open some restaurants by Mammoth...
Wilbur, hmmm...I'll have to check some out..
Thank you all for the suggestions...I like simple food.

i highly recommend Sue's Kitchen on 23918 Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance. the place is rather small & not super clean, but customers are always lining up, fighting for a table to get a taste of their famous "spicy beef&tendon noodle soup". it's only $5.55 for a HUGE bowl!

bump. a lot has changed in the Western SGV in 6 months.
Northern Dumpling House + Mama's Lu opened, ditto to the Delicious Delicious which has taken over Mama's shop space. Then there's the Taiwanese joint on Las Tunas which has a killer fish/dill dumpling and other noodle items...
Anyone care to contribute?

Manny K. says:
I have been to Sue's and order their NRM. It was spicy all right but I don't care for it being swimming in chili oil. That is not the way for me.
Went to Northern Dumpling House last weekend. Didn't order their NRM. Their pork with pickled greens wasn't that great, the broth was so salty. Their '3 fresh' dumpling was good but below Luscious and 10053 in my opinion. Their hot and sour soup was very promising since it does not have any chili oil in it, kudos. Very powerful white pepper and Szechuan pepper corn punch - which is closer to the way it is suppose to be.
