Are there really no Dunkin' Donuts out here at all?

I lived in Boston before moving here and I'm going through serious withdrawal.

I keep hearing rumors that there's one left somewhere but I don't know if it's true.

Does anyone know for sure?

What's up with East Coasters and their Dunkin Donuts?  I do not eat donuts but what makes them so good?  I think we only have the prepackaged donuts at some grocery stores.

I love Boston though.

and also, i know there are dunkin' donuts in the midwest and as far west as arizona/nevada.

Just none that I know of here in California.

I have looked.  There are no DDs out here in LA or in Cali at all from what I can (or rather can't) find.

Having gone back to Mass a couple times since moving I have to say though, DDs coffee isn't all that good.  Maybe my taste has changed but I am not impressed by their offerings any longer.

There is something about being able to drive up and order a medium regular and just get a great cup fo coffeee milk and sugar end of story without resorting to Grande venti real milk and real sugar to get a cup of coffee...

Dunkin Donuts is old school great coffee, and the donuts are cakey solid hunks of deliciousness, none of this spun sugar donut junk...

Yeah, they had Dunkin'Donuts out here but then there was an influx of Cambodian Immigrants that monopolized donut stores and pushed most of the corporate stuff out of SoCal. It all started with one guy. If you google it a ton of stuff will come up, but here's a NY Times article for all you east coasters who don't like the news papers out here either.

http://query.nytimes.c...

Personally I avoid corporate stuff. the whole "regular coffee" thing isn't a Dunkin'Donuts thing. It is an East Coast thing and wouldn't have ever worked at the Dunkin'Donuts we used to have out here.

Oh and BTW they sell Dunkin'Donuts coffee beans at the Rite Aid on Western and Franklin. They might have it at other Rite Aids also, but I'm not sure.

I'm so there ZR!!!  I'm originally from Boston too; over 5 years out now and have still found nothing comparable...  Yes, there IS the coffee available at Von's now, but it's $9.50 when it's not on sale ($6.99 right now if you need a fix!) for a measly, miserly 12 itty bitty ounces.  My fiance went back East w/me for the first time over the 4th and had his very first authentice Dunkin' Donut experience.  He's still in mourning, though state 7-11 coffee is close.  I say, for one born and bred on DD, nothing will ever come 'close'.  Good luck! PS-called DD headquarters a while back and was told they ARE expanding west...perhaps the recent supermarket availability is pretense for it's arrival!

No Dunkin Donuts, I wished they had one. I had them during my stay in New York and Boston. According to their website, they have a location in Oceanside.....

Yeah, Donut cultured just isn't really big in SoCal.  As Mark W said in an earlier post, once the influx of Cambodian/Chinese donut shops came about, corporate donut shops couldn't really compete.  Chains like Yum-Yum, Winchells and Dunkin for that matter rely on volume sales to make money.  Asian donut shops are all about cutting costs.  Quality is worse, service is worse, shops are dirty, etc. but they are cheaper.  So what you end up with is a bunch of small donut shops that don't really get that busy, but are profitable and attract enough business away from the big one's that they can't survive.

Winchell's coffee is actually pretty good...and their donuts and shop cleanliness/service rival that of Dunkin.

DD actually sells more coffee every year then any other company including Starbucks.  That's their cash cow.  And their breakfast sandwiches are better then anything you get at any other fast food restraunt
user photo
5/22/2008 Jim Bob H. says:

ryan...  I think it's a lot dough for a donut franchise...The market is loaded with resales on the East Coast.  If they are making so much money...why do so many people want out?  I love DD,  But on the corporate level, they don't have it together.  The company recently sold..maybe the new owners will give it the branding, and organization they need.

I would say they may be growing too fast, just like Starbucks.  But my point is just that it's hardly a donut franchise these days.  It's a coffee franchise and the rest of the revenue is coming from the breakfast sandwich and the expanded lunch/dinner menu of pizza and sandwiches.  I'm actually flying to Boston tonight and I'll be hitting the DD for a coffee and sandwich when I get off the plane

Why is dunkin donuts the best coffee? Because it has more caffeine then most other coffees on the general market. Check your local grocery stores. they sell the ground beans there. My suggestion, tell anyone visiting that they need to pick you up a pound or two. Most east coasters will understand your plight and soon you will have an abundance of DD coffee. But i really think what makes it so tasty is the smell of the donuts and the coffee in the same room. they all smell the same and that scent is so awesome that i get a nosebleed every time i smell it.
I did read the different levels of caffeine in an article but i cannot seem to find it online.

Apparently there's one in a strip mall in Long Beach.  I've never seen it personally, but a co-worker admits to having been there as a child.  However, like most childhood memories, it's hard to pinpoint the location.

I'm a huge DD fan growing up in NJ and going to college in Boston.  It is, without humor or sarcasm, one of the few reasons I often consider moving back.  However, the new flavored iced coffees at McDonald's are a fair substitution.

I am from Boston too and the first thing I do when I arrive in New hampshaaa or boston is get a medium regular. Nice and hot. Mmm  I love Dunkies coffee, its more of a treat now than anything. So sweet and sugary. The closest thing I recently discovered is McDonalds new ice coffees. I get the Regular with 1 less cream than normal and it tastes similar to Dunkies.

I know they sell Dunkies coffee at some baskin robbins but I havent seen any in this area that offer it.

Oh man!  i just got in an argument with a girl at work about whether or not there's a D&D's in L.A.  She refused to believe that there wasn't until I showed her this post.  and I completely and utterly agree with this statement from Lisa "When I was Obscure":

It is, without humor or sarcasm, one of the few reasons I often consider moving back.

Dunkin Donuts and Red Sox games are the only two things I miss about home.  I can do without the weather, the bar fights, the traffic and the weather (did I mention that twice?  It's worth mentioning twice), but Dunkin's is amazing.

And much like other posters from above, I have taken my girlfriend back east a couple of times and now she is completely and utterly hooked also.

Finally, I have looked into franchising a dunkin Donuts in L.A. (A.) because I think it would be an absolute cash cow and I think this thread is a testament to that and (B.) because it would mean free Dunkins anytime i wanted it.  but D&D's is currently not franchising in CA.

I'm open to signing a petition if anyone wants to start one.  Also, if anyone wants to bring me a coffee I'll take a medium Blueberry, Regular.

I remember there used to be DDs when I was a kid, but they're all gone now. I remember a bunch of Winchell's when I was younger too, but they're mostly gone now too. The only chain I see is Yum Yums really.

Donut shops make most of their money on coffee, not donuts. And with all the coffee shops here, it's probably not profitable for corporations. Hence, all the mom and pop shops. Plus, Cali is more into "healthy" foods.

But I think with all the east coast transplants in LA, a few DD locations could definitely be viable.

4) This whole "Donuts are not healthy" canard is BS when comparing DD against other donut chains.  They do not use transfats and their nutritional information is posted on their website.  As a diabetic I have to say their donuts are the ONLY ones I can eat without any blood sugar issues, which speaks to both the carb and fat content in their donuts.  I have a harder time (and more calories) eating a bagel with cream cheese than I do a DD.

I love DD.  Krispy Kreme could go out of business tomorrow and it wouldn't register a blip on my radar.  But I miss me some Dunkin' Donuts.

Not long ago..(.'bout 8 months or so,) Consumer Reports did a thing on "Best Coffees" Dunkin Donuts Coffee was rated #2!!!  That's right!!!  #2 out of a ton of coffees they rated. And, the #1 coffee was just a bit better, and was so expensive, they suggested DD over all others! (No...I don't remember the #1 pick)  Starbucks didn't fare well at all...No surprise to me

It IS all about their coffee...so much so that I have a Bunn O Matic coffee maker in my home.  ...but, you gotta buy it AT a DD location..to make if perfect..but if you wanna get close, buy the coffee in your local market..they WILL have it...shell out around $275.00 for a Bunn O Matic...(Online) and have at it!

Funny thing...I'm in Ma right now on vacation from Ca. ( Born & Raised in Ma)This is how I came on this blog.....my wife and I are trying to find a DD in Ca with no luck....

I think their main problem in getting a foothold in Ca is that their name doesn't denote the fabulous coffee they serve. Their donuts are very "Old School" Not to say they aren't good, just that there are so many Gourmet type donuts out there that it's tough to compete. Kinda like the first time I ate a burger at In & Out....I never went to one of them because their stores looked so out of date.....Well, my first time, I FLIPPED.....Best burger and frys....PERIOD...End of Story....and for my money...the same goes for Dunkin Donuts Coffee!!!

The latest scuttlebutt has Dunks coming to the West Coast in 2009-2010.  If anyone has been back east recently, you've probably noticed the flatbread pizzas and whatnot.  The new owners are trying to expand the menu in an attempt to get people to think of Dunks for more than breakfast and coffee.  Once they establish that, they're going to try to move west, where they think the new model will work better than the more traditionally East Coast "coffee and donuts" situation.

It's also been suggested to me many times, and I have to agree based upon taste comparison, that the great taste of Dunks coffee in New England has a lot to do with the Hood Cream they use.  My last trip back in June, I had my coffee every morning for 2 weeks in Boston.  The usual goodness.  But I spent a day in NYC, and the coffee was AWFUL.  Which was also true when I lived there.  If anybody out there takes their coffee black and can offer some perspective...

Another note to add:  Currently if you search google maps for Dunks in Los Angeles, a location shows up on San Vicente.  There is NO location there.  It may be an office of some sort for one of the new franchisees, or someone who owns a Togos or Baskin Robbins (all part of the Dunkin empire).  Just don't waste your time going there thinking you'll get

This is really upsetting reading this.  I am moving to LA in about two weeks and while I sit here in my beloved Boston sipping on my delicious medium iced coffee coconut cream and sugar (which nicely sits in the bottom of the cup so I can decide how hyped I would like to get) with of course the hot large cup around it so you don't have to worry about the dew covering your hands, I can't help but to feel devastated by the fact that I will never again be able to purchase this delectable coffee everyday before I go to work.  There is honest to god so many DD in the area that you can't walk half a mile with out seeing at least 3 or 4 of my favorite watering hole.

There slogan is "America Runs on Dunkin", this is a lie.  It should read "Christian Smith Runs on Dunkin" or at least "The North East Runs on Dunkin" because we and I do.  In the morning, in the evening it is my saving grace.  How can America Run of Dunkin if there is no DD in the middle of one of the largest cities in America!  This just can not be.

So what is there to do?  I guess I will oh so ever enjoy these next two weeks of coffee bliss because it will soon be all over.  To anyone thinking of opening a DD in the LA area in the near future, PLEASE DO!  and if you were to pay me enough I would run the sh*t out of that DD.

Well, I will be suffering like the rest of you in just a bit, but for now got damn this iced coffee is good.  It is as if god came down and brewed this special for me.  I love you DD.

Making me homesick talking about the North End.....My father was born there..and some friends still in the area, with family all over the outlying cities. Been out here 40 years, but always back in BeanTown for this and that!!!!!

Nope!!! Nothing like pulling up to a "Dunkies" and having the best coffee in the world...."Good mornin' profesaah! Yeeup....a Regalah!!!"

I think for a DD to be successful in Ca, they need to advertise it as, "Dunkin Donuts Coffee" ..and have the doughnuts and whatnot as a side thing....Ca is definitely loaded with Asian doughnut shops..good doughnuts, too..but the coffee they serve? URINE!!!!!! Plain and simple!!!!!

OK....Good luck in your ventures out this way..and remember...."Bunn O Matic" Two burner.....It's the only way out!

I did notice that no one on this blog is talking about the food in DD. My favorite thing that they had was the breakfast sandwiches. I'm not sure if the bagels would taste the same out here though, it has something to do with the water. Bagels in NY just take different. Maybe they could ship them out here, thats the only way they would taste the same. My #1 reason I luv DD is.... I can just order a simple cup of coffee, and unlike Starbucks it's not a huge production. I don't have to order a grande, with an extra shot or crap. Dunkin Donuts is owned by the same company as Baskin Robbins and Togos.  It's not uncommon to see a Togo's/Baskin Robbins in SoCal or a Dunkin/Baskin Robbins in the Midwest.  I don't know what the plans are for Dunkin, but I think combining with a Togo's seems (somewhat) logical, so there would be business after noon.

Regardless, I think the SoCal Donut scene is way too over-saturated.  The key to Dunkin will be just  to open a few Dunkin's here and there in SoCal, so people will drive from all around just to eat the donut and drink their amazing ice coffee.  This was the Krispy Kreme strategy.  What not to do, is to open too many locations like Krispy Kreme did afterward, then killing off your own market.  I don't know, its just going to be hard for Dunkin to re-enter a market where there's way too many donut shops and coffee joints.  Even fast food chains and Bagel shops are their breakfast meal/coffee competitor.  With the Asian donut shops essentially putting a stranglehood on Winchells/Yum-Yum and driving away Dunkin the first time, it will be hard for them to re-enter SoCal.

All anyone has to do is Google Dunkin Donuts and Los Angeles. You'll have your answers. There WERE Dunkin Donuts franchises in LA until the 80s, then corporate contracted the expansion back to the East Coast. There was still one franchisee west of the Mississippi, not sure if that still exists. They have been considering re-expanding, but after Krispy Kreme's explosion, and subsequent implosion, corp has been cautious, and plans have been put on hold. You can still buy their beans online or in local grocery stores.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We're in the same boat my friend. I had been living in Boston for 4 years before moving out to Cali 4 months ago. Sadly Dunks is pretty much a Northeast establishment. People just don't know about it around here. Myself, I love their donuts. I also love their breakfast sandwiches, preferably the sausage, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. I know it's super unhealthy but it's so delicious. And even though I don't drink coffee I loved their iced coffee beverages. To give people some perspective, back in Massachusetts, Dunkin Donuts is so strong that they were able to effectively shut down every Krispy Kream store that opened in the greater Boston area. Starbucks has tried to open up stores next to every Dunkin Donuts but hasn't really been able to stop the lines from flowing in and out of "Dunks" all over the Northeast.
they have 'em all throughout the east coast not just NH. they are good, but if you've ever had a Krispy kreme fresh off the hot wheel, you'll be convinced they sprinkle a little crack..."I think i tasted some egg and cinnamon"
The rumor has been that they are going to open a store in Torrance. I've been hearing that for months, though.
Look here, they've been hiring for that store.  But, who knows if it will go through or what the hell the story is.
Damn national advertising campaigns...
I understand when you're watching cable TV, but really...why does this crap happen on local radio stations...How many Cici's All You Can Eat Pizza Buffet commercials have you had to sit through for the last year...
Dunkin's Coffee isn't some disappointing coast to coast dream like grabbing a sack of steamed burgers at White Castle...Dunkin's coffee is seriously awesome and needs some distribution out here...I'm born and raised here, but have been to NY, NJ, MA, etc...enough times to know!
It is because Dunkin Donuts is smarter than we are. They have been, they left, and now they stay from from the worst place on earth - California.
