Okay -- so I used to actually be a bra fitter.
Seriously.
I worked a store that doesn't exist here -- wish they did because they train their bra fitters correctly.
So -- here are my tips -- and you can do it yourself if you like.
Take a measurement around where your band would be... and below your "b00bies" Do it snugly -- not tight... but SNUG.... add 5 inches to the measurement (though, the easiest way to do this is fold the measuring tape at 5" and the math is already done for you...) so... that gives you your band size.
If you'd ilke to get a not-so-accurate cup size you can measure at the fullest part of your breast and subtract the difference between the two... 1" = a 2" = b and so on...
But really, your best bet is to try on different cup sizes to see which fits you best... your band size is THE MOST important thing because it's actually what makes the bra function... don't get caught up with the cup size...
You can fool around with the bra sizes too if you have to -- for example.. a 38B is the same (for the most part) as a 36C... go figure... you can usually get away with it if it's one size difference like that...
You always want the underwire to be "pointing" toward your armpit.. it shouldn't be pinching too far in.. or out... (so if you were to trace the underwire and keep going after it ends, you should get to your armpit in like an inch or so...)
You also shouldn't have double boob... get a bigger cup.... or the "gap" go smaller.. duh.
And you should be able to put a finger under the band of the bra comfortably without too much effort... and it shouldn't constrict your finger when you do :)
When you get a correct size bra on for the first time, you'll realize it immediately. You look better and feel better.
Okay.. so that's bra fitting 101... if you decide you don't want to subject yourself to a bra fitting at a place where no one cares..
my advice is that if you do want a bra fitting -- go to a smaller, boutique shop vs. VS or the like...
TRY ON A TON of them even if you're not sure you like a particular style... or underwire vs. non-underwire, lined/padded vs. not.. you may surprise yourself.
And good luck -- seriously :)
