I go to USC and can't seem to find a good black barbershop that is conveniently located in Downtown LA without having to take a trip to Crenshaw, Ladera, Baldwin Hills...etc.  Does anyone know of a nice place that is either in the Exposition Park neighborhood or Downtown where I can get a good haircut??  I want to go somewhere reputable with a good environment and PLUS I'm young so I might want to get experimental with my hair while I still have lots of it and get a black mohawk/crazy parts or something on the edgier side as opposed to a simple cut.  Holler if you know of some place.

well if you want a black mohawk or crazy hair, Im pretty sure any place would do it not just a black barbershop. Unless you just feel more comfortable in black barbershop. If thats the case, im not sure of any.

Is there a different way to cut black or " african american" hair then other types of hair?

mostly, black hair needs to be dealt with differently than other types and I don't really NEED it to be a black barbershop, i just need someone KNOWS and has experience with black hair.

Lewey, downtown is the same distance as getting to Crenshaw Blvd from USC. What's the real reason you dont want to go the same distance for what you want?

I am always in Downtown as opposed to Crenshaw and it would be more convenient to hit up a place thats there.  Plus, I don't drive and its easier/cheaper to DASH than Metro.  Thats all.  I'm open to suggestions though if you know of a good place.

Well sweetie that make sense. Good luck on your hunt. There are a few barber shops. (The Standard has one in their lobby)

I don't think you'll have much luck finding black barbers downtown. You have to go to the 'hood if you're trying to get a cool fade.

Actually I was having the same problem, which is why i came across this thread - but fortunately I have a solution for you... Go to the Embassy Barber Shop (444 S Flower St) and ask for Ray - he will be able to hook you up.  I think he only works part time, so its best to call first to set up a time- 213.629.2341... he's a great guy, very friendly and gives a good cut... not exactly "cheap" - $25 but beggars cant exactly be choosers downtown right?
Also, if you're a sports fan, you'll get a kick out of all the memorabilia that they have here - lots of autographed pictures - mostly baseball, boxing, and football... by the time I had soaked it all in, my cut was already done... haha
