I know what you mean about the price of restaurants around here.  I grew up aorund Berkeley and am way spoiled.  There's so much cheap great food in Berkeley!  I have been pretty disappointed by the general lack of quality and the height of prices in Los Altos!

I like Vive Sol off El Camino.  Technically, it might be in Mountain View but it's good food and a nice atmosphere.  Think $12 enchiladas mole.   Also, the new Italian restaurant Pompeii in downtown Los Altos is decent and has nice pastas and pizza.

Sit down or take out doesn't really matter, unless I get too famished before I'm finished with the work that needs to happen today- then I'll probably take out & eat at my desk.  Thanks for the tip on Pompeii- I'll definately look into that.

Though in mtn view but nearly at the border, the Country Gourmet at Rengstorf and El Camino is great (all meat is organic and fish is wild caught) and cheap. Portions are huge!
