I enjoy Sliders on Castro.  If you're near Potrero Hill (say, travelling north to the City on 280 and feel like getting off on the Mariposa exit), there's a little deli place on Mississippi and 18th that makes a great burger for the price - Ganim's I think it is called?

I too say go to Hodad's in OB. That's my number one choice in all of San Diego. But, number two or three would be Fatburger in PB. They do a killer burger as well... and while I'm at it, In-n-Out is in my top five all-time burger joints. It's a big ol' chain, but they make a mean burger and fries.

All this burger talk was making me crave one so the hubs and I decided I'd give Tiolis a try for lunch.......YUM.  They have like 25 diff burgers on their menu so  We each ordered a different one and split them....me-angus w/cheddar, him- the santorini (1/2 beef, 1/2 lamb served w/tzaziki sauce) -both tasty.  I'm not convinced after one visit that I can say they are "the best" or anything just worth a stop since they are near you in NP.  Oh and their fries are decent-nothing spectacular.    I say try Tiolis and  Liars while you guys are back.....

i probably would have said the same smack about boll weevil and in &out.

i like in & out well enough, but it is a fast food burger. well it would be fast if the lines weren't so fucking long.

boll weevil just never took off for me. and i had them as a kid through my construction years where us guys went during our lunch break. boll weevil is no different than say tgif, applebees, bennigans, denny's, etc... they get the job done but they are ordinary.

i have learned from this thread that some posters may really like the recommendation they offer. i work with a bunch of guy mechanics with some very simple tastes. one guy went to red lobster for his 20 year wedding anniversary and thought it was the best shit ever. he totally loved it.

You know what Brother Roger, I don't think the Western is as unhealthy as many would think.  Gyro meat is actually lean.  Plus I bet the barbeque pit burns quite a lot of fat off the beef.

I would dare say that the Big Mac weighs more heavily on the heart stopping scale than the Western.

when you add a bunch of pb girls (or where ever ) the young guys follow, and then the service sucks because they allow too many people in.

true i don't think i would go there for a dinner burger, but it is good enough after drinks. and they taste fresh.

And I know other places (like SF) are much worse, but I don't care about that--I don't live there.

Photo of Christy R.

9/12/2007 Christy "peach of a gal" R. says:

It's an irrational fear, I suppose.  I have a hard time really seeing new things--like reading a new menu or street signs or whatever, so in a high-traffic area it just stresses me out with all the turning around and squinting at street signs and trying to drive the speed limit instead of crawling along.  And if it's dusk?  Forget it.  It's not really crippling though.  I mean, I WILL do it if it's worth it to me.
user photo
9/12/2007 a w. says:

Those people in the condos desperately need a place to relax that isn't too expensive (Indigo) stuffy/dressy (Sogno DiVino) and has decent service ( Princess Pub = 20 min wait for a beer).  I think that may be why people seem to like Fillipis.  They can relax there.

Thats why the waterfront is suddenly cool(er).  My 2 cents.

Crudo is going to become a sports bar so we'll see if they get any of the Waterfront crowd.

you are totally accustomed to it. we all are. when i first switched over i didn't like the taste of it. it tasted a bit gamey to me, or something. but now, i have a hard time the other way  and try to avoid conventional meat because of what i've learned and for my own health. kids are going through puberty younger and younger... it's all about the food. something tells me it's not natural for a kid to have a mustache in third grade (boy OR girl!)

also, you should do a "smell test". cook both and you can smell the difference. i made a rib roast dinner for my parents and they couldn't believe the difference in the quality of the meat. soo good!

anyway, back to the better burger debate.

not all of it is hormone free at tj's or henry's, so you have to check it out.
there's no hormones in poultry, so you just have to check for antibiotics, cage free, etc.
organic meat definitely has a gamey flavor, which i don't care for, so i just go for hormone/antibiotic free.
whole foods also has super high quality standards about the treatment of animals, so that they are humanely raised & slaughtered. you can find out more about the different types of meats, standards, etc. http://wholefoods.com/...
that goes back to dairy, too. hormones are in milk, cheese, etc. so i recommend being choosey! if it is organic, then it will also automatically be hormone & antibiototic free since they don't mix the two.
