I will be visiting the Dry Creek area at the beginning of October. I only have one day to spend there. Of all the wineries I will be visiting, only one appointment is set in stone--a food and wine pairing at Seghesio Winery. Other than that, everything else is up in the air. I am looking to visit smaller, family owned places that are friendly and have exceptional wines--especially Zinfandels. Can anyone shed some light on where I should visit? Also, where should we eat a quick lunch and dinner after?

You should think about touring the tasting rooms around the plaza in Healdsburg. It's pretty convenient because you get to taste a bunch of wineries and you don't even need to drive... LaCrema, Murphy-Goode, Gallo, and Kendall-Jackson are some of my favorites. It's always nice to get a massage right after at Akoia down the street. There's a bunch of great restaurants around the plaza too! :)

This particular Rosenblum tasting room is around the square in Healdsberg. The square is ADORABLE. Also, the Oakville Grocery store right next to the Rosenblum tasting room has delicious deli sandwiches and past salads, salads, etc. for lunch with a cute little cafe/outdoor seating area.
Even though their main tasting room is in Alameda, where their winery is located. They have an extensive tasting list as they make a lot of wines. Of interest are their dessert zinfandels that pair really well with chocolate and their zinfandels in general. They make a few that are delicious and have scored in the 90s. Also, they have a good Rose, even though they don't pour it in the tasting room generally.

$10 or $15 tasting fee, depending on which flights you chose to do...open from 10am-3:30 pm, no limosines, by appt. ONLY. Please call to make an appointment. It's is gorgeous and delicious! ;-) You absolutely HAVE TO GO TO Iron Horse and DO THE CALIFORNIA SPARKLING FLIGHT! No zins, but everything is so good regardless.

They have a Sparkling Gewertztraminer and also make some good Zins and dessert wines as well.

Tasting room open from 11-4PM, I believe. EVERYTHING at Ridge is delicious. They make some solid industry respected reds and their whites are good, too. I guess they're like Rosenblum, they have multiple locations and source grapes from all over California to make their wine. Ridge has an amazing reputation and honestly, you can't go wrong by going there to try their wines. They have really really good reds and they have a cult following.

Within the appellation of Dry Creek, and right there on Dry Creek Road, you don't need to venture far for some of the best wines. My top five have been, and they've never let me or my friends down:
Wilson Winery
Mazzocco
Unti
Yoakim Bridge Winery
Bella Vineyards

Best way to "do" Dry Creek? I worked there for three years and the same thing works every time. Start somewhere that sounds great (preferably somewhere further North (Fritz, Sbragia) so you can work your way South during the day.) Ask people in the valley for their favorites and other great suggestions for where you should go. Check out if there's anything going on that day. Don't do more than four. Have lunch at the Dry Creek General Store. Best porch view on Earth. Relax!! Enjoy one of my favorite places to be. Heaven on Earth.
