Was wondering if there is a nice sushi place for 4-5 to hit for dinner (all u can eat sushi) and hang out for 2-3 hours and chat.  Peninsula and/or South bay is preferred.
TIA,
Guri

Wouldn't any Asian buffet have sushi? I'm thinking of my favorite one in Fremont, Pacific Buffet. I mean, it wouldn't be fancy but it would be sushi ...

Try looking up "Todai restaurant"
I'd give their sushi 2 1/2 stars and dessert 3.5-4 stars.

Satsuma does this Sunday nights for $18 or so.  I've never done it, though.

Apparently they make the rolls to order, which sounds way better than premade Todai trays.

how often are "all you can eat" restaurants truly places where you actually want to eat all you physically can?

the people I am going with are from the peninsula /PA/MV area.  I prefer to go there as it is better than 3 people driving seperately to East bay.   But then I should make them drive all the way here, I am doing all the leg work.  Damn those friends who cannot drive to East Bay. ;-)

hokkaido was like right next to an ice skating rink.  they also had raw oysters there.  I was pigging out on those.  their sushi selection was eh.  you also get a half lobster per person.

In Fremont...

Pacific Buffet is at Stevenson/Fremont Blvd.

There's a buffet at Blacow/Mowry where BevMo is.

There's also one at Fremont Blvd/Peralta.

I've not tried any of them before.

if you go to a sushi-boat place like Ariake, it'll be made to order pretty much, will cost about the same, and you'll get better fish usually.

I agree that Pacific Buffet in Fremont is good, as far as Asian Buffets go.  It's actually mostly Chinese food, but they have sushi also.  It's also really cheap--about $13 or $14 for dinner, I think?

FWIW, we tried the AYCE night at Satsuma this Sunday and were satisfied with what we got.  They DO roll everything fresh; the trick is you can only order two rolls per person at a time (well, this makes sense so the sushi chefs don't get totally backed up rolling you five things).  This also helps you pace yourself.  I was getting full after the first round, unfortunately, but I powered through.

They don't have the fanciest of their fancy rolls on the AYCE roster but they do have the Rainbow Roll, Sunrise/Sunset roll, a bunch of deep-fried rolls (mmm...deep fried spicy tuna), so it's not all California rolls and filling up on rice (though I actually think Satsuma makes a more than decent CA roll).  The spicy hamachi and the tuna/hamachi/ebi combo roll was pretty popular at our table.  It's not the absolute best raw fish in the world but obviously it's WAY WAY WAY better than Todai.

The price is $19.95/person now.  I had 4 rolls of my own plus stealing pieces from others at the table so I think I broke even.

Nigiri and sashimi cost too much for all-you-can-eat, I think -- the closest they had was the rainbow/sunrise/sunset rolls (CA roll layered with fairly decent sized slices of raw everything).

I saw you said YOUR in the East Bay, so in case you want to go somewhere with friends in that area here are some places to try:

Kaigan in Vallejo -
This was the first place I tried in there area, mostly because I felt like this was one of the few places I wouldn't get shot walking back to my car LOL. Anyways, it was really price, but recently they created an ALL YOU CAN EAT lunch (made to order style) for only $8!!!!
I went with my bf and roommate, and we probably ate over $100 worth of sushi and other goodies (not just sushi on the menu, you can get appetizers and bento box type dishes too) for less than $30 bucks.

Bay Sushi -
In fairfield, 14 for lunch, 18 for dinner, made to order style with specialty rolls, nigiri, no non sushi items though. Also they tend to add lots of rice, I usually just hide the extra rice as I stack up plates with big parties. Also, they tend to get slower and slower with your rolls as you order more and more, like they want you to stop eating, but it just makes you more hungry. If your going for lunch, I suggest going before 1:30 or else you'll only get to eat like 2 rolls for 14 bucks (not a good deal)

Hisui -
In Vacaville, they have an all you can eat boat special, 11 for lunch, 22 for dinner, both are great, i love their sauces =) the quality of the fish is worth the price, but if you go after 8pm (closes at 9, or 930) then you wont get full bc they stop making sushi (or you could eat the stuff thats been going around that no one wants which isnt good either!)

One place thats cheap in the South Bay/Pennisula area to try is Hana Maki - SO GOOD AND SO CHEAP. Get to go and go home and relax =) or go to the drive in with awesome sushi.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR SEARCH!

I don't usually trust sushi/rolls/anything raw at buffets. But Hokkaido has those clams with creamy stuff on top. They're orgasmic and about 5000 calories each.
