True about NPR.  Good music and movie recs.

Here's one of my favorite resources for finding new music:  The internet radio station I listen to sometimes is run by a guy with VERY good taste in music.  It's called Radio Paradise (dot com).

You can listen for free.  It's all member-supported with zero ads, which is cool.  You can also browse the station's website for ideas.  There are lists of their at all-time most played songs, highest rated by listeners, etc.  You can also see what he's been getting the most airplay of late, both albums and tracks.

Here's the link, but feel free to check out the site.  It is a good audio accompani...accompani...accomp animent to your Yelp time.  http://www.radioparadi...

Excuse the 'plug' but it's a great resource.

Yeah Be Your Own Pet is awesome, I haven't heard their new one yet - is it any good?

So the shit that I have in heavy rotation is:
- Cadence Weapons' "Afterparty Babies". So this kinda nerdy black kid from Toronto who used to write for Pitchforkmedia.com decided he'd be better on the mic and the beets than these other fools are. His first album, "Breaking Kayfabe" (awesome title) had potential, but this shit is just that -next- shit. When I listen to this I feel the same way I do when I heard Company Flow or Aesop Rock the first time. But this kid tells his stories over some real club - and I mean HOUSE club - shit! If the whole hip-house hybrid sounded like this and not 2 in a Room, I would've been all over that shit.

- The Ladies, "They Mean Us". I've loved Rob Crow since Heavy Vegetable. In fact, I think that was his best band and shit like Pinback is just that watered down pop shit he probably writes in his sleep. The Ladies pairs him with Hella's Zach Hill and when you listen to this, keep in mind that is JUST TWO DUDES. Fuckin' Zach sounds like he's playing like three kits at the same time! Check out "Nice Chaps, Buddy" for a pure brilliant ending to a beginning that sounds like it'll never work.

- Thes One, "Lifestyle Marketing". People Under the Stairs - the hip-hop group, not the Wes Craven flick - make my favorite hip-hop in the world. It's like if you took A Tribe Called Quest out of New York, put them in L.A., and replaced the afrocentricity with blunts, beers and beetmaking. If you aren't up on these dudes and you like hip-hop, check out their "Question in the Form of an Answer" album. Or just check the other 'what are you listening to?' link. Anyways - Thes is 1/2 of PUTS and he came out with this all instrumental hip-hop album last year and goddamn, not even narcoleptics sleep this hard. Basically, Thes takes all his inspiration - and samples - from Herb Pilhofer, a dude who was responsible for LOTS of 70's era jingles. It's some total BBQ music, just in time for summer!

And finally, this: http://www.ragandboner...

Pure dubstep nastiness from noyeahno. When you hear the "big up!" be prepared to drop what you're doing and lose your shit.

The Raveonettes. Their new album, Lust Lust Lust, is good, but my favorite is still Pretty in Black, from 2005. I don't know quite how to describe them, so I'll let wikipedia speak for me:

"Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers, coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 50s and 60s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats and often dark lyrical content, similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground. "

Basically, rad rad rad.

And I second the She & Him recommendation.

there is way too much trite indie pop in this thread, so lets crank things up slowly:

1) mark lanegan: http://www.myspace.com...

formerly of the screaming trees, he's released a number of great projects in the last year, including the dark gospel-influenced trip hop of "soulsavers" (myspace.com/soulsavers) and two very sinatra-hazlewood type duet albums with isobel campbell (myspace.com/isobelcamp...). best served chilled with whiskey on the rocks

2) 3: http://www.myspace.com/3

incredible flamenco guitar mixed with soaring, creative clean vocals, much intelligent jamming with a dash of heavy metal here, a splash of bowie there. listen to "the word / the end is begun" start to finish and good luck collecting your jaw from the ground after. things really pick up at about 4 minutes into the song

3) mike patton : http://www.myspace.com... , http://ww.myspace.com/...

he's done quite a bit since faith no more and mr bungle, most recently a few soundtracks and obscure collaborations. his peeping tom album is a wonderful and overlooked angle on pop and hip hop, and on his solo page you will find the glorious "a perfect twist", a return to 50s style groove but with lyrical themes of spanking and stuff

4) rush : http://www.youtube.com...

their new album is slammin', great drums and strong acoustic instrumentation throughout, still some of the best bass playing ever even if his 50-something year old voice is growing tired. the rest of the album is better than this single

5) megadeth : http://www.myspace.com...

if for some reason you like heavy metal, at least make this band a favorite of yours. curiously overlooked by the rock 1053 crowd. if you are an east county metalhead, you probably don't even realize this guy wrote your favorite album

If it's at all your kind of thing, the double-album fundraising tribute to Alejandro Escovedo that came out a couple years ago is great.  Funny, because I thought it was dog shit at the first couple of listens.  Now I love it.

Escovedo is an Austin legend.  Several years ago he contracted Hepatitis-C and nearly died.  All these great musicians chipped in to help out.  The album is called Por Vida.

I saw one of my favorite tidbits ever about any musician on Escovedo's Wikipedia page:

"Also in 2005, Escovedo's song "Castanets" appeared on the iPod playlist of George W. Bush, prompting a self-imposed ban on live performances of the song."

Gotta love him for that.

@ mason - yes!! andrew wk is the man, i played a show with him a few years back and that one night spawned hundreds of great stories.

@ star - the newer campbell/lanegan collaboration is much more stylish and old timey, highly recommended. did you know they werent even in the same country for "ballad of the broken seas"? better vibe on this one. see also: robert plant/alison krauss.

@rob: mike patton is one of the most prolific guys out there, almost everything he's done has been great, my highest recommendation goes to "lovage"  - youtube it - you will be satisfied. http://en.wikipedia.or...

i like blonde redhead plenty. i started off kinda creeped out by them, but definitely warmed up to them, especially from "In an Expression of the Inexpressible" and their subsequent stuff. 23 - their latest - was a big surprise, and i liked it immediately

The Doors - Spanish Caravan

been in my head all day.

Yeah, Mike Patton does a lot of shit.  ha.  He's all over the place.  I even heard him cover "[Hit Me] Baby, One More Time" awhile back.  General Patton v. the Executioners is a nice collaberation.

Mace, you buy a Silent Comedy CD?
