Soooooooooooo...surprised no one else has commented on it, but...as of Friday 7/31/09, another good alternative radio station in the Denver metro area bites the dust: Indie 101.5 FM, last refuge of non-corporate "alternative/Indie" FM music listeners in Denver, was assassinated by corporate idiocy holding a howitzer at its head and pulling the trigger. Made an awful mess of things.
What's risen in its place? The wonderful, amazing, and *ever-so-scrumptious* "101.5 The Pole -- *Stripper Radio*". I kid you not.
On the homepage for the new http://1015thepole.com, an initial statement from the GM of "Max Media", Jeff Norman, says: "The research is in and the numbers are irrefutable. There is a large, gaping format hole that has been all but ignored."
*blink* There is? What would that hole be -- the one you left smoking in the back of Indie 101.5's skull? The ever-popular niche market of disposable income that strippers pump (no pun intended) into the economy? Or could it be the vacuous black hole of hip-hop, urban beats, and 80s hair rock - which is what you tout your format is going to consist of? Because God knows, we don't have any hip-hop or hair rock stations in this town, no sir!! (rolls eyes and drowns on my own sarcasm)

where we're free of the quasi-tyranny of the FCC censors and the necessity of running advertisements to pay for airtime (or are we?).... So it's still around, and potentially free of restrictions -- but not available via radio anymore. Time to dust off that iPod if you haven't been using it...
My first topic convo posting, be gentle...but I'd love to see what people think: of the format change, or the (to date) craptacular playlist 101.5 now has in it's new format, Indie's move to the Internet, of your despair at having to be force-fed more Clear Channel ca-ca, a new hole opening up in your programmed stations on your car radios...whatever. Pax.

I was listening at the moment that they did the switch over. The dj didn't mention anything. Played a song, did a little filler and then BOOM, it was Rick James singing "She's a Very Kinky Girl"...... holy moly. The branding as the Pole is totally disgusting.

David "Hello? Is this thing on?" S. says:
I have not listened to over-the-air radio for four years now. If you do not listen to your music online, via satellite or on your iPod, I can't see how you are enjoying music. Too many ads, too many repeats of the same 10 songs, too much pablum and too many idiots speaking.
Radio is dead. The FCC killed it and the stations, knowing that they could never win a pissing match with the almighty FCC, chose to take it out on satellite and online music sharing. Now look where they are.

I caught it on Sunday when I got back into town (after being out since last Wednesday) and was all... WTF?? I even sent my sister a text that said, "What the hell happened to 101.5?" I kept hoping it'd give one of those station id things so I could at least hear what it was called, but I looked it up this morning.
Still, I think it's for the best. I read on their website about how they had to play certain songs for ratings or something, and at times I'd listen and think, "This is no better than 93.3" (which I think is a total poseur station). But, just watch. The FCC does not monitor online stuff... YET.

101.5 was the closest thing Denver had to a good radio station. It really is a shame that corporations had to kill radio.
Summit County amazingly has a great station: KSMT. I go up to Summit County every weekend in the winter and so grateful that they have KSMT on 102.3 and 102.7. It's sad when major metro areas, like Denver, can't have a good, independent station.

I don't listen to much radio, but I do. I had no idea 101.5 changed, as I haven't listened for about a week or so.
I haven't checked out the new station, but after reading '101.5 the pole'.....I think I'll stay away.
Very sad.

The whole idea for the new station is so cynical: i.e. appeal to insecure men.
Now we will have to hear the station every time we stop at a red light next to a short bald guy driving an oversize pick up truck or Hummer.

I was listening to the radio when it happened. I turned it to Indie 101.5 expecting to be happy and it was playing some terrible things. And I thought to myself "Oh, this bad song must have slipped into the amazing awesome playlist of rock" and I switched it to my Who tape (I'm the only person I know who still listens to tapes, mainly because I don't have a cd player) which sounds terrible because I don't know what's wrong with the tape settings. Then I flip it back onto 101.5. Still shitty music. And now I'm thinking to myself, "Haha guys. Funny. It must be like Flashback-to-the-80s hour or something." Then, I hear it. The announcement of the new station. The new station?!
I raced home and read Ralphie's statement on how they're no longer on the radio and they would be uncensored on the internet now and can be even more awesome. Too bad I don't have an iPod.
All I have to say is I never spent the time to realize how much 93.3 really sucked until 101.5 punk rocked it off the air. I just can't have anything nice.

Yeah! I moved back here after three years on the east coast and i was loving 101.5. I dont think 93.3 has changed theyre playlist in years. Enough already with that damn 311!! But Im glad to hear im not the only one upset with 1) Losing indie 101.5 and 2) the creation of 101.5 the pole.

...I'm glad the annoyance (and outrage in some cases) is gushing along like destructive lava bursting out of a volcano. I'd love to direct it all towards the collective residences of the upper corporate scum who made the choice to change the format.
Thanks for sharing your other neat observations, too. :) Awesome.
Tiffany W: *grins at your last comment* *Now* I can tell you're fired up about it. ;) And you're welcome for the clarification. And yes...I'm sure the FCC will get their grubby little paws into Internet radio eventually...but let's hope not too soon. (http://Pandora.com is a godsend...)
Martin F: Amen, brother.
Norah: Wise choice to stay away. In fact...I hope so many people stay away that the station and its new format sink into the ground under the weight of their own failure and bury themselves...leaving nothing but new, pristine calm where once was garbage. (with the occasional 'ok' song tossed in, admittedly)
Andee: I so agree. SO so so agree. (And the answer is: if you're in Metro Denver, and you like FM radio, and your station of choice isn't talk radio, hip-hop, or provided by Clear Channel...yes, everything will suck. Eventually.)
Suzy S: Keep dreamin'. :/
Lauren: we all do. (I thought the same thing that you did...in fact there were some conspiracy theories floating around and posted that it was an advertising stunt to change format for a few days to get more people to listen to 101.5 when they returned back to indie format. yeah...I *wish*.)
Allie V: *exactly*, and pretty much what I typed to Lauren above. Now you can listen to your 3Oh!3 non-stop. =^p (that's a bleah face)
hmmmmmmmmmm...I've got an idea where they can jam that 'the pole'...*snerk*

Sigh. I was happy to have something to add to my selection of what to listen to in the car when I don't have the ability to listen to my ipod. Guess I just have to go back to only having NPR and Radio 1190.
I read the letter on Indie's site and great for them that they're "excited" about being only on the internet, but personally I only listen to the radio in the car and if I'm near internet/computer it's going to be my own playlist.

April O.: good call. I'm not really allowed to listen to "that kind" of radio at work (especially if it's uncensored "Closer"... eek), so even when I DO have access to internet radio (which is only at work or maybe in the labs at school if I have time to "hang out" there [which I don't]), I don't usually use it.
I have an iPod, but not the phone that can get the internet and no money to buy one of those dock things or whatever they are... sure they may be the new wave of CD-players in cars (which I also do not have [two getting stolen was more than enough]), but until they're $10 a piece, guess I'll just have to listen to KOSI 101... not that I... listen to Delilah at night or anything...

Lou, I have a bad feeling that it may be a sustainable business model. I always worked construction and blue collar jobs in college and high school and there was always a struggle between white workers who wanted to listen to classic rock/rock (i.e. 103.5/106.7 style) vs. minority workers who wanted to listen to poppy/hip-hop (i.e. 95.7 style).
When the corporate douche was quoted in the first post: "The research is in and the numbers are irrefutable. There is a large, gaping format hole that has been all but ignored" - he is sadly likely right. This station may provide a way for blue collar workers to compromise between pop vs. rock. Plus, they can pretend they're masculine by listening to "stripper music."
As I said in my previous post, this this new station is very cynical.

This sucks so hard. The first few times I tuned in I thought it was a joke!! Indie 101.5 was the best thing to happen to radio in years here. I only listen to radio in my car, so this stupid Wi-Fi nonsense is no good for me.
I don't want canned recordings of skanks between my tunes, like "this is Gwendolyn, and when I'm on the stage I ohhhhhnly listen to the Pohhhhhl." Ew ew ew ew ew. Granted, I love a little Crue and Rick James... but come ON. My skank tolerance is really low.

You all need to settle down and stop hating on strippers. It may be the pole, but that doesn't mean that it is skanky hoes as some of you have implied.
LADIES, GET YOUR DOLLAR BILLS READY! I have found a new radio home in Denver. I have been dancing and stripping in my office ever since yesterday when I saw the station changed-over. I think I am now ready for my debut.
My station ID: "This is Rock Haud, and when I'm jogging around Wash Park, I wear metallic running shorts." For those that don't know me yet, please read the reviews of my jogging around the park. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

April: totally agree about your listening habits...
Tiffany W: Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!! KOSI?!??! Really? that's *so* far off the Indie101.5 track...hehehe...
Lou P: YEAH, no kidding!!! You put into words what I was thinking but couldn't put into words. If strip joints are your only ad revenue...you're headed for big trouble.
Martin: Having a split format station is going to work? Not usually ...not outside of college radio, maybe...but hey, like you were saying, it's *remotely* possible that blue-collar workers might feed this unholy abortion with their disposable income...
Kym: Exactly -- what good is it going to do me with Indie on the web if I can't get Internet radio in my car? ...affordably. =^p Ditto on the skank tolerance. ;)
David S: you're hilarious...and scary :D (sounds like a line from Ludo's "Love Me Dead"...hmmm)
Bonnie G: It's not, though. It's like a strip club in my car...minus the strippers, the overpriced drinks, or anything even remotely entertaining going for it...

Ughhhh... not good. I to hit my preset for 101.5 this morning. There's usually a good song on but instead I had to listen to "Baby got Back". Usually that's a fun song but at 6 a.m. I just wasn't ready for it.
Sad to see the station change.

So I gave it a chance on my lunch break. The first sentence out of my mouth? "They weren't kidding." It really is "The Pole".
I don't have anything against strippers, stripping, dancing, taking off your clothes for money, exploiting a man's desire for a woman's bodacious bod while wringing his pockets dry, or any other part of it. It's just if I were a stripper, I wouldn't strip to Nickleback, Alien Ant Farm, or Sir Mix-A-Lot. That's all I'm sayin'.
Unless it was Converge's version of Baby Got Back.
I miss you, Indie. Come back to mama's Camry.

I didn't know Denver needed a special radio station geared towards the skanky ho slutbag hookerslut genre. Denver has only EVER had 2 good radio stations KTCL---in the 90s and Indie. And now they're both dead and gone, thank you very much corporate wankers. If I ever win the lotto I will bring back the good stuff. Until then, I can only count the days until The Pole is off the air. Go play that filth in Arkansas.

One of the only things I missed about Michigan when I moved away were the radio stations that I listened to. 101.5 was pretty good out here. But now I'm totally hooked on Radio Paradise (http://www.radioparadi...) they also have a sweet streaming app for your iPod Touch/iPhone. Radio is dead! Long live Radio!

They could have just called it "C*ck" as in sucks.

Anyways, I wanted to report that it *appears* Stripper Radio is good and dead (as it was rumored on 1 or 2 boards dealing with radio miscellanea); in it's place is "101.5FM - The TRUTH" -- good old fashioned right-wing, conservative, plutocratic, anti-Obama talk radio.
......O_O
......Well, whatever way you lean, at least it beats "Stripper Radio" hands down...any day.

Damn it all. I tuned in the other day and heard Warrant's "Cherry Pie"--I thought one of their DJ's was just being ironic on a Friday afternoon. This sucks...the last thing Denver needs is another Uncle Nasty, let alone an entire station of them.

True...KBPI's DJ's seem pretty far and away professional and not boring. Whip...bugged me at times. (you can read my 1st review about 101.5 some months ago). At times he seemed like a jabbering gnome whose head had been stuffed into a bug filled with a sugar and cocaine mix, and would usually find some group to single out with snappy slaps-upside-their-face and so on. And then, sometimes he seemed ok, even semi-enjoyable to listen to.
It's hard to tell if they have the same jocks there, but the "stripper radio" area didn't seem that it was the same people at all; and the talk radio section seemed like it's all canned and mass-produced wherever conservative talk radio gets created...hmmmmm.
Happily listening to KTCL's best feature by far, the Retro Show...2 hrs of cool, eclectic tunes from the 80s and 90s. If only there were an FM station like this all the time...

Radio 1190 is comprehensively college-indie rock. I get that demographic and I tried listening to it but it just doesn't do it for me. It's cool they play Sleater-Kinney and presented Justin Pearson's new band All Leather at the Bluebird but unless I'm writing a paper on Kenneth Anger films or smoking pot with a hippie band I just can't dig most of that music while I'm driving.

FYI -Gary Clift sent a message to the members of Indie303 Fan Club Subject: So, you want Indie 101.5 back on the airwaves? I've listened to the fans of Indie as they yelled in disgust about Indie 101.5 going off the air. Some people suggested they would be willing to donate money to Indie like a public radio station, others wrote to the General manager of Max Media (more on this below), while others quit the fight and moved back to K-Tickle. This was the only station on the air that had the combination of excellent DJs (Whip - Best of Denver 2009), excellent music (how long did it take you to say "Holy shit, they just played XXXXX"), and fantastic weekly shows like Tyler Jacobson's Danger Radio.
It was a slap in the face to turn on the radio and hear The Poll, and even worse, Mancow. It was an insult because Indie 101.5 let us be a part of their culture as Whip, Lynne, and Ralphie talked to us on the air, at shows, online, and in the streets. Indie became a beacon of good music in a shit pool of horrible corporate radio. So what went wrong?
At the end of the day, a radio station makes money by having listeners to advertise to. The method of analyzing the number of listeners is an archaic method used by Arbitron. The method used was the journal method where, people write in journals what stations they listen to, at what time. There are many problems with this method but most important for us, it sucked at measuring the 25-45 year old demographic. Arbitron is rolling out a new device, called the People Meter, which listens to what the person is listening to and knows what station they are tuned into. In the next few weeks, this audience measuring device will turn the radio world upside down and level the playing field for the 25-45 segment. In other words, Indie 101.5 listeners will have our day in the sun. Now, our mission as fans of Indie303 (101.5) is to let the General Manager of Max Media know we're out here in massive numbers. This broadcast email is going out to over 1600 members of the Indie303 fanclub. I've come up with 3 simple things we all need to do: #1 LISTEN TO http://facebook.com/l/...

We need to pack the joint. #3 DEMAND THE RETURN OF INDIE 101.5 FROM JEFF NORMAN. Jeff Norman P: 3/872-1500 e: jeff@maxmediadenver.com Make him understand there is a massive audience of Indie 101.5 fans and we want Indie 101.5 back on the air. That's it. It's up to us. I loved indie 101.5 and completely blame their demise to whomever sold their ad space. I know you all paid attention to the music but did you ever listen to the ads? They frequently advertised the Lodo's bar Maloney's , do you think a single person that frequents Maloney's would ever listen to indie music, f**K no! I feel like the ad promoters didn't understand their demographic and were just so desperate to take any money they could get that they ended up ruining what they created. I remember several times Ralphie mentioning that indie would make it if listeners supported the companies advertised on their station, so I guess it was inevitable that 101.5 would fail, because they failed to reach their target market. :( bad marketing is such a shame.

I've seen the same thing happen in similar markets. AM radio went from playing mostly cheesy music & talk to spanish & talk radio. Not long after, FM started to replace stations that played rock, classic rock, 80's, etc. with spanish & a couple of talk-only stations. This is now happening in Denver due to its change in demographics.
