You can try NewSkool Tattoos in San jose, they are amazing but you wont get an appointment for 3 months...thats for sure.
Marks of Art, Julio does amazing work over there...
If you go to Players Ink, you can see Shaun...
I guess it depends on the flavor or style you're seaking...
Or you can trek all the way to the city to go see George Campisi, Justin, or Mike over at Everlasting Tattoo...
I know everlasting and newskool tattoo has a website and Marks of Art doesn't but Julio does.

New Skool is the best but Joanne is right--it will take a long time to get an appointment. My personal favorite there is Adrian

Da Wei on El Camino in Santa Clara. That's where a lot of famous sports celebs go. It's also where my friends and I go. They are super hygenic and very cool people. Da Wei is the famous one, he's in all kinds of tattoo mags. Lily does all the tribal tats. She's awesome, too, but not the master that Da Wei is.

Thanks all...Since i'm un-tatted as of yet, I didn't realize you had to make reservations so far in advance for the good ones.

adam barton is well known in the world, he just moved to santa cruz and tattoos at o'reilly's. his wait is approx 3 months. expect any 'good' tattoo artist like this to have a wait at least this long.

NuSkool in San Jose. Don't have a tat, never thought I would get a tat, but after going to NuSkool with a friend I was floored. It was years ago and I am still amazed at the work that I saw. My husband has a few tattoos but they don't even compare. Yes, you may have to wait to get an appt., but it's with you for life!

Da Wei - I haven't been to their shop but he's well known. A celebrity tattoo artists. (I think he did The Rock.)
Humble Beginnings - They're really great artists. Each of the artists have their own style so check out their portfolio on their website to see which one suits your needs.
4zeroEight Tattoo and Piercings - Tell Monk (artist and owner) that Mark and Ann Leslie sent you. Their website is kinda eh.. so if I were you I'd check out the shop to see better photos of his work and Joe's work (the other tattoo artist).

barb i think its best to start with a design first. something youve had in yoru head with a couple drafts and ideas. then once youve set upon a design then go from there. the reason being is that its rare to have one artist be strong and encompass one particular design.
there are certain artists that are strong in a particualr design style. the ink meduim is the same, style is not.
i.e. style:
bio mechanical
traditional
new school
tribal etc...
