Anyone have their peepers done? Are you happy that you did it? Where did you have it done? Any bad experiences or have you heard of someone to avoid? Starting to think this would be good to do, but since it's so permanent I'm a bit of a chicken.

my father, who is has phd in optics and is an optometrist at the mayo clinic, is adamantly against lasix procedures, as is the clinic itself. he has a lecture full of his reasons, but the bottom line is the one you mentioned: it's permanent and no one knows the side effects, and from what i gather, it doesn't really eliminate the need for glasses forever. if you're really interested in the arguments, i could get the academic side for you...

of course, there will be many who think it's great because it's new! and different! and sounds too good to be true! and makes doctors lots of easy money!

Not to be the grammar police, since everybody hates the grammar police, but the eye surgery is Lasik, while lasix is a drug given to racehorses. I think the distinction may change the type of advice people give you.

I'm very interested in finding out about Lasik, I'd love to abandon my contacts and the occasional irritation and dryness they cause, not to mention not being able to see at all well when I'm without them. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread- Sara, anything you might be able to refer us to would be great.

Sorry, I meant to put an "lol" in after the first paragraph- it would have probably made me look a lot less smarmy! : )

My fiancee had it done and she's very happy with it, although she does get halos at night so I end up driving when it gets dark out.

Thanks Sara, yes any info.  My old doc was against it, the new one for it. Makes it hard to decide.

I do a lot of driving at night so the halo thing would be a big risk. Patrick no problem on the grammar police, I had a feeling it wasn't right. I just couldn't remember it... However, must of been a flashback, my mom took me to the racetrack all the time when I was a kid. So I saw the word plenty of times.

Brandon, is it just an annoyance for her, or does it bother her enough that it keeps her from driving at night totally?

GRD,

She will drive if she absolutely has too, but she does not enjoy it at all. It has been the biggest drawback for her, but since she has a chauffeur (me), it works out.

Two years, three months later, my vision is crystal clear.  I'd definitely do it again since I was so extremely nearsighted.  There was nothing quite so exciting as being in traffic with a contact lens popping out of place and reduced depth perception.

Lasix is also commonly prescribed to people with congestive heart failure, but I've made the same typo despite working with heart patients for a long time.

Some good points Jeff. I've heard all sorts of prices. From 500-4,000. Some insurance policies cover it, if you have good insurance that pays for exams, it might. I for one would leery of those advertisements you hear on the radio. If I have it done, I want to find someone that is so good they have a waiting list.

Jeff - I considered vision surgery for a long time, after a long period of skepticism.  I didn't read Sara's post as childish at all.  I'd welcome her offer to present the articles, but I don't see much reason to discard her father's opinion right off the bat.  If Mayo as a clinical body is against it, it's worth hearing their side.  If trusted doctors advised me Mayo was necessarily conservative in its recommendations, I'd factor that in.

Anyway...

My surgery was done by Dr. Peter Panton in Elmwood Park (North Avenue near Harlem).  I think he charges about $4000 and insurance doesn't cover it, as a general rule.  I waited until the first of the year, and planned ahead to have the money set aside in a health savings account, so my taxes were reduced that year.

I would love to be free from my glasses and contacts. I have had them since I was four and it is not such a huge thing to wear glasses or put in contacts, but swimming/water sports would be way easier. Not that it's a huge factor, but that is one thing that would be easier-along with waking up and being able to see right off the bat. There is that small part of me that hesitates, because I was told I would probably need glasses/contacts even after thte procedure, just a lesser RX...so why would I do it?? If I could be reasonably certain that I wouldn't need anything after, maybe...Just that little voice that says-"You only have one set of eyes, and while they are not perfect, you are okay with glasses/contacts,so don't be a dumbass and mess this up."That's just me...

I checked into it a few years ago and one of my eyes is really bad and they wouldn't guarantee that I would have great vision in it afterwards.  So my thought was if I can't go without the contacts, what's the point.

What I find unsettling is the price difference on the procedure.  Ellen paid 4k, I've seen 5k and I've seen $1500.  You think it would be a pretty standard cost, so why is it so much more some places?  Are they using better equipment?  Do the doctors just want more money?  And does anyone respond to those commercials/coupons for the cheap prices?

It seems to be getting significantly cheaper.  I first looked into it about 5 years ago and was quoted around $4,000 an eye for my particular problems.  Now, recently (October 06) I looked again and was quoted $1,200 an eye by the same place.  They said it is getting cheaper as it gets faster, the equipment is getting paid off, it is more standard, and they have more of an idea of the level of care it involves.  I will probably check again in a couple years..  Maybe then I can afford it!

A friend of mine has the surgery a few years ago, and he swears by it. He was not quite as blind as Ellen (read her review), but he was pretty dang blind, and afterwards was able to go without glasses for the first time since grade school.

Although Lasik surgery is permanent, it is not a permanent solution. My friend who had the work done has started wearing glasses again, though only for reading and close work, and nowhere near the strength he once did. He is in his 40s, though, and that is not at all unusual, whether you've had the surgery or not.

FWIW, here's what the FTC has to say about it: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp...

JR - if you get a Lasik consult, ask whether you're a good candidate for getting just one eye done ("monovision), then you'd use your dominant eye for distance.  It sounds crazy but apparently the brain adjusts to it quickly.  In this link below, they mention that they have you wear a contact lens in one eye for a trial period to make sure you would adjust.

I found several links that describe it, but this one is pretty complete: http://www.clevelandcl...

My doctor told me about lens implant procedures for presbyopia, but it's really invasive and expensive as compared to Lasik, so no plans to pursue it at this time.  Fortunately I haven't started down that road yet.  When does it usually set in?

The Lasik Vision Institute also has financing you could apply for - 0%. I paid $2300 but I got the lifetime guarantee with it so if anything changes as time goes by, they will correct it. It includes several exams.

I just had it done last week The Lasik Vision Institute has a great record and many recommendations. Since they specialize in only Lasik I figured they would be a good choice. The people there are so nice too. It involves several trips for pre-op, and post-op exams and then of course for the surgery.
