J "Occam's Chainsaw" J. says:
As someone who has been living in East Village (Wicker Park South ;) for six years, and as one who has been familiar with the neighborhood since 1991 (my roommate back around then worked in Wicker Park so I remember quite well the 'good old days' of Urbis Orbus and Busy Bee's Cheap Polish food, and listening to random gunfire while drinking beer in my friend's apartment) I can honestly say that there isn't that much difference now between Wicker Park and Lincoln Park, and those who are convinced otherwise are usually 20 something hipsters who are too scared to hang out in Pilsen so they try to convince themselves that Wicker Park is edgy and artsy while hanging out in front of the new Marc Jacobs store.
I agree with Mary though about the transient nature of both neighborhoods, I find it annoying too, but I love my street, apartment, and landlord, so I don't see myself moving anytime soon. Also, I have to admit, there are some upsides to finding myself living in "Lincoln Park West" after all these years of living in neighborhoods that weren't all that trendy or hip (like Albany Park), so I can't be bothered losing sleep over it.
And finally, as a bit of an ex-punk, I find hipsters less annoying that sorority girls, they are pretty much both different sides of the same coin. However, I get less flack for being a White Sox fan by the hipsters here in Wicker Park than I would if I lived in Lincoln Park, so it has that going for it ;)
