Travis P. says:
This weather makes me think of comfort food, specifically beef stroganoff. Where can I get a good beef stroganoff in Chicago? Preferably in Lakeview, preferably at a diner-type (read: not-too-expensive) place.
TIA.

Red Rooster Wine Bar and Cafe: 2100 N Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60614 (773) 929-7660
They use beef tenderloin in their stroganoff, and the portion is BIG! I highly recommend it.

I have a recipe, and I can cook...but I'm kind of short on time lately...and kind of lazy.

Beef Stroganoff is one of those dishes which, even I could find a respectable version at a decent restaurant, I would never ever order it just because I was exposed to too many bad grocery-bought variations of it while I was growing up. Same with Salisbury Steak - I'm convinced that Salisbury Steak was invented especially for frozen dinners since I've never seen it offered on the menu of any respectable eatery.

Mr. B- you hit the nail on the head with the Salsbury Steak. The worst in the world- the frozen On-Cor kind, with the carmelized fake grill marks and the mysterious congeling gravy product.

Try Zhivago on Gross Point near Central in Evanston. I believe they have it on their menu and it is a Russian restaurant.
If it is made properly with a high quality sourcream and top cut beef, it's wonderful (and fattening!)
