Some of the OTC supplements will help you lose weight, but most of them are very unhealthy and without a lifestyle change the weight won't stay off once you stop taking them.  I highly recommend going another route if you can!

Derek's right - the only pills that work efficiently are methamphetamine, but you'll need a good doctor to prescribe these to you. All other diet pills are unproven and fall down under scientific scrutiny. Even appetite suppressors.

If you don't want to go into long term dieting and exercise then your options are:
meth prescription
stomach stapling
tapeworm
severe illness

Diet and exercise -- already got that since I had gastric bypass back in 2003. After having 2 children in 2 years though the pouch has increased. So I was just looking for something that would get this ball rolling so that I can back to my pre-baby weight.
Not trying to be an after-school special. I am also not interested in meth --too expensive for the s a h mommy. Also Alli doesn't work  -- all ready tried it.

when I went off adderall I gained like 30 pounds in a month and veeeeeery slooooooowly it has started to come off.
(of course, people calling me fat all the time is also a good motivator...)

this cleanse has really helped me identify what was unhealthy about my eating habits and I CANNOT believe Im saying this, but I eat about 1/3 what I used to when I follow a vegetarian whole foods diet - when you nourish your body with what it really needs (this means lots of water too!) it is AMAZING how you just never feel hungry.
I dont exercise much, but I find a bowl of fruit, a salad and some potato is enough to keep me full all day (and I generally have a huge appetite!)
the worst part is that even when I am not hungry, I STILL crave refined carbs - pizza, ice cream, cupcakes, omfg....
but discipline is really the only way.

I will be interested to see how well I can manage my eating habits after this cleanse is over. admittedly, I have been super sick for the past 4 days so like Tom said, being sick can definitely jump start the weight loss!

agree on the spread the meals out - don't binge on carbs ( but don't restrict either)
oatmeal for breakfast one morning - eggs the next - keep a good variety to keep the body from plateauing.
Join a gym w/ classes you like - it keeps you motivated or get a drill Sergeant friend to walk w/ you every morning / evening.
Oh and take it easy on yourself - i assume you are in good health so five pounds up or down ain't a deal breaker.

I get what you are asking. I too have a "pouch" that I hate. However, I also hate consistent exercise and I have no will power or patience for a cleanse.

I wish there was a healthy pill to help with it all, but I don't trust any diet pill. I am too scared of hurting my health or getting addicted.
So, instead I just try to love my body for what it is. Some days is easier than others and I admit that I have really bad day s where I hate my body (my stomach area really). But, I realized that unless I can take charge and change it, I can't bitch too much.

But, I respect where you are coming from and can relate (not to having kids, but to hating my stomach area).

As some people have been saying, don't use diet pills!  Exercise and watch what you eat.  Maybe take a class on how to cook healthy foods, and how to tell what "healthy" means, because I think many people don't really know what's good and what's bad.  People have been saying to space out your meals, which I agree with - but don't snack.  I also highly recommend planning out your meals (writing it down, with calorie counts) and sticking to your plan.  And exercise - join a gym (and go to it!).  I'm a fan of biking to work, but if that's not for you, try to get some type of exercise every day, even if it's just a (relatively fast paced) walk.

Also, be patient.  Losing 2 lbs a week should be your maximum, although it could be a bit more at first.  More than a couple pounds a week really isn't healthy.

Just one main rule...  No carbs after 6:00pm!  =)

I've found that with rigorous exercise (ie: tennis and football), the one bad meal consumed during the day doesn't come back to bite you.

Cayenne pills will help suppress appetite (and supposedly rev up the metabolism). They make you feel all tingly and warm inside, which is kinda fun. Most grocery or health food stores should carry these.

Since it's just a spice, it's all natural, and it has some other health benefits (e.g. improves blood circulation and digestion) .

For anyone who's interested, there is a program called Structure House that is located in North Carolina.  What they're really good at is where people go and actually live there for a period of time (usually weeks I think) to take classes, and live in a very structured environment especially with respect to food and exercise.  These people are usually quite overweight and their weight loss goals are often in the hundreds of pounds.  Someone who I know very well went there, and stuck to it (continued with what they teach after she left), and lost about 120 pounds.

I figure most people here aren't interested in going there, but I think they have a book on what they teach.  That book could be a good resource for people who are really interested in losing weight and putting in the work that is required.

Chun's totally right - while discipline about not buying a frappe every day is hard at first, once you start losing weight and feeling better, they are constant motivators to keep not buying frappes.

But an occassional small froyo from Berryline is OK - only 125 calories!

Also, keep a food diary.  Helps you see where you're snacking randomly (ie, did I really have five frappes this week?!?!).

Melissa, I'm with you on that boat.  But the good news is, carb intake is permissible before 6:00pm.  Although I doubt Spaghetti w/ Meatballs would be considered a diet food (even though it is my favorite food).

Francesa, Thanks for the nod!  Diets are always hard at first.  If anything, the basic definition of a diet is a temporary modification of eating consumption behavior for which is terminated over a set period of time...  Given that stance, the most successful "diets" are formed through behavior modification.  In short...  Change your lifestyle!

And of course, food education is of utmost importance.  The more a person knows about "good or bad" carbs, glycemic indexes, fad diets, and how a certain body digests a particular food, the better!

8/20/2008 Chris "King of Krump" L. says:

LIpo 6 is the best pill, but I don't take it anymore because I'd rather reduce my carbs and do cardio more often than feel cracked out all of the time. It's awesome when you first start taking it, but you start to develop a tolerance for it after about 3 weeks. I'd suggest three weeks on, two weeks off, if you decide to take it. I did get totally ripped when I took it, but I was also dehydrated and jittery a lot of the time.

Lipo-6 is consistently the top selling fat burner on http://bodybuilding.com because it works and it's relatively cheap. Probably not great for your body, but it's your best option if you are willing to take a pill to accelerate fat loss. I know people that take things a lot worse than fat burners, so it wasn't that extreme when I took it about a year ago. Based on my experience, it's better than Hydroxycut, Sacker 2, Xenedrine, and Hot Rox. Hydroxycut hardcore looks promising though, so if Chun recommends it, it's probably worthwhile as well.

Again, I want to emphasize that you can just cut your carbs, increase meal frequency, decrease meal size, and increase cardio and get about the same results. You might get a little boost from a pill, IF you eat well and exercise, but it won't be miraculous.

Cut down fat / junk food with excess calories / more protein. Back that up with exercise, good eating habits. Pills or any other short cuts; the person will regain weight lost during treatment unless they keep up with substantial body work outs.
user photo
8/20/2008 Derek K. says:

I'm not sure why you're coming to Yelp for health advice but I personally started cutting back not too long ago. You can change percentages of carbs/fats, add supplements, follow all kinds of rules about when to eat and when not to eat - blah blah blah but...

The bottom line is:  YOU MUST EAT LESS THAN WHAT IT TAKES TO MAINTAIN YOUR BODY WEIGHT

Do that and you will lose weight. It's simple math. Go figure out your BMR - there are about 2 billion calculators on the web. Take your BMR and plug that and your activity level into a Harris Benedict calculator. This will give you your total number of calories needed to maintain your weight. Multiply the result x 7 - that's your weekly intake. Take the # of pounds you want to lose per week, convert it into calories - for every 3500 calories you cut per week, you should lose a pound. More than 2 pounds a week is unsafe and unlikely anyway. Shoot for something like 1 lb or 1.5 lbs. Subtract the number of calories from your weekly number then divide by 7 again and there's your daily caloric intake goal.

As you lose weight, you'll need to redo these calculations again every time you lose 10 lbs or so since your BMI will have changed.

Oh and run your ass off.
Gooid luck.

The only diet pills that worked were the onems with ephedrine but they made you feel like shit.  Best way to lose weight is slow and steady, by eating less and exercising more.  If you lose 8 pounds in a week you can gain it back in a week, it's mostly water weight...unless you're 400 pounds.  If diet pills REALLY worked people wouldn't need anymore and stop buying them and the diet industry wouldn't be a multi billion dollar industry.  Manufacturers wouldnt let that happen.

It's all about your eating habits.  I've realized while on this cleanse that I have some REALLY bad eating habits that need to be fixed.  So I'm trying to take Phase 3 of the cleanse I'm doing and adapt it to my every day life, i.e cutting out bread and pasta as much as I can and sticking to 100% whole grains instead of processed white "grains" and sticking to lean meats like chicken and fish and adding some nuts as well.

But also, I think it's important to give into your cravings every once in a while, because if you try to resist for a long time, I think eventually you will break and go on an eating binge.  So if you want to have a piece of cake, go ahead and eat it.  Just don't eat it every day =)

Greg, well said.  Calories in/calories burned isn't incorrect, but it's definitely an over-simplified way to look at nutrition as it relates to weight loss.  The little things (and big things) you can do to increase your calories burned per day are at LEAST as important as the things you do to cut down on your calories consumed.  Meal timing, balance between carbs/proteins/fats, etc. can all crank up the metabolism so those little diet changes have a bigger impact.

Oh Debra, silly, I have 2 toddlers, that would be the "Irish twins" that I am refering to in my name......

Tracey, that theory breaks my heart cuz I am some killer jeans from my thinner days that I would like to wear again ;)
I guess it's possible though -- sad-- but possible.

What Derek & Greg said.

Bradford:  Yes ... tho to rehash an old debate between greg & i, those oversimplifications work for 90% of people out there because the reality is that they never really get to a point where the little tweaks will make a big difference.  This counts both for cutting & bulking (as well as other exercise science).

There are a lot of oversimplifications that completely suck though, IMO ... e.g. BMI, the recommended calorie amounts and other such things (because they very intentionally make them extra low to compensate for people's inability to properly count Kcal), etc - but a lot of them are close enough for most folks doing normal things.
