I wonder about this, as I stand in line at the bank to deposit a check, and find myself getting stuck behind people who are doing much more than that.

Should I trust my checks to the little envelope you stuff in the ATM slot? Are there other basic bank errands you can (and should) do via ATM these days? Are tellers only meant for really complex transactions these days?

The new BoA ATMs are pretty slick.  You don't need an envelope for check deposits, and in many cases it will scan the check and automatically read the amount on it.

I've been using this to deposit my paychecks, and only hit up the teller if I need the money in right away.

Wells Fargo Bank when making a deposit, you can get a photocopy of the check you deposit.;  I enjoy that feature.
Also, I do use my ATM for shopping at markets and Walgreens, especially when I want cash back.

I've been depositing checks for years at the atm...the largest check being somewhere around 18k.  No problems.

Once, I even got ballsy and deposited a few hundred...in cash.  Of course, I recorded the serial number off of each bill and took a photo as evidence, but I was curious as to what would happen.  Damn if it didn't work without a hitch.

I've never had a problem depositing either cash or checks by the ATM.

The difference is that if you go through a teller, they may be able to make more the funds available to you quicker.  For example, if you deposit a large check, the teller can manually adjust it so that the first portion (e.g., $1,000) might be available in 2 days while the rest of the check clears a week later.  The ATM deposit will just take the whole week to credit you for the full amount.

    yup...i do
-deposit checks (always get a scanned copy because sometimes the machine misreads a number)
    -transfer funds
    -check balances
    -print out any i need

sometimes i don't withdraw money at all...i just use the atm to do some quick banking...

There no problem depositing cash at an ATM. It's actually safer than using a teller. The money is photographed digitally going in. When using an envelope for deposit. the deposit is recorded on the envelope. The envelope is opened in the presence of at least TWO employees and counted and reconciled against the envelope.

I use the ATM to transfer funds to different accounts and to pay bills.

At WaMu/ATM they would post it to my account but the funds did not clear for a few days. I ordered some of the pre printed deposit forms and envelopes, they were free and you get a lot! You could mail them in, but I just go into the branch and drop it in the Express Box. It posts to my account at the end of the day.

Communication devices. Seriously. Spy trick to communicate internationally without detection:

Open an account, give two guys cards and set up a code system ($20 w/drawl means Plan B, $100 deposit is Plan C)

One guy in, say London, w/draws a set amount (say $20)

The other guy can instantly see the money has been taken out and knows what it means

Read about it once as an example of why all the communications monitoring in the world won't due you much good...

Off topic a little, but thought it was cool

    I use the atm to:
Transfer funds (When I'm not near my comp)
    Deposit my paycheck
Check transaction statuses (when I'm not near a comp)
Withdraw money from other accounts attached to my atm card in case my checking account is on low
And a bunch of other random crap
