Winter is drawing near, and I am getting a yen for Hot Soup.
Who serves up the best hot soups in Austin?

I don't know if you are picky about chain/franchise versus local/independant, but Panera has excellent soup. Eastside Cafe is great also if you're going for a sit-down restaurant. I'd stay away from Jason's Deli's soups...I've never had any luck there.

I know this is an old thread, but I have to put in a plug for The Soup Peddler. Delivery to your door and an amazing diversity of soups weekly. They sometimes put funky spices in old favorites, so check the ingredients list if you don't like fennel, anise, bay leaves, etc.. Top marks go to their mulligatawny, black bean soup, caldo de pollo, gazpacho, hungarian goulash, and Tom Kah Gai.  I love soup and I love the Soup Peddler.

I actually think Central Market has some darn bang up soups. Currently, I am ADDICTED to the chicken and tofu coconut curry soup they have in their soup buffet. It's so great and spicy for a chilly November (almost December) day.

Whole Foods has some good ones, too, but sadly I tried the Rustic Chicken Noodle yesterday for lunch and was not impressed. I found a few pieces of gristle (which makes me gag) in some of the dark chicken chunks. Blargh.

I second the Soup Peddler.  Menu varies weekly and overall the most diverse globally inspired soup list from African Peanut to Russian Borsht to gold ole Chicken Noodle.  Love trying different soups I've never had before.  Go subscribe to their weekly menu, order some soup, and go buy some crusty bread.  Yum.

NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!!

Sorry, I had to get that out.

Madam Mam's tom kha is pretty good, but any halfway decent tom kha is like crack for me.  Thaifoon in Fashin Island had my favorite...diced tomatoes, mushrooms and cilantro floating on top....mmmmmmm.  Not sure if they're still open.  Mam's also has a version with artichoke hearts that is more sour, but also tasty.

I had the Beef Noodle Soup from Asia Market on Friday when it was so cold out. It was hot (and somewhat spicy) and perfect for the winter weather.

I had that Beef Noodle soup too, it is called Hunan Beef Noodle Soup or something. Not as spicy as Thai's soup but perfect for winter or to get rid of your cold.

I posted this in a similar thread awhile back, but I'll put it here too; two of my favorites are:

Tomato Basil at Jason's Deli
Lemon Chicken at Tino's Greek Cafe

If the carrot jalapeno soup sounds good to anyone, its actually at "Bistro 88" on Bee Caves, not "vistro 88".

My 'best soup in town' is the shrimp and corn bisque at Chez Zee.  And the New England Clam Chowder rocks at the culinary school on Burnet, I think its called the Blue Water Cafe.

I haven't had a bad one at Coco's. Spicy beef is near perfect for cold days or colds.

It's hard to beat the 10-12 soup options at Central Market.

Also the Pho (is that what it's called with rice noodles and goodness in a bowl) at Triumph is awesome.

Also, the spicy peanut soup at Austin Java is really good... esp with the bread.

The best soup in Austin *was* the Just Wonton at Noodleism.  The Posole at Taqueria Arandas is awesome. Wiki-Wiki has a great Tempura Udon.
