Jessica "Do the chickens have large talons?" S. says:
Some guy just came to my door "selling" alarm systems. I'm naive (and dumb, I know) and let the guy in. It didn't take long for me to start freaking out, thinking he was casing the joint. Now, I don't have much, mind you. An old DVD player, an old TV, some furniture and a cat box.
I asked him for a card--he didn't have one (freak out even more). He had paperwork and stuff for me to fill out, on the spot, but I told him I wanted to wait. I said I had questions--for my roommate--but it was hard to get a number out of him. He gave me HIS cell phone. I asked for the Austin number. He didn't have it, but gave me the corporate number. He asked what sorts of questions I had, and I told him I just wanted to talk it out to the other people who live here. He asked how many. I said me and another person. (maybe he's just bad with social skills??)
I called the corporate number. I asked the answer-er about talking to someone in Austin, to see if they had sent someone out. He said that he could help me. I told him the guy's name. He seemed to know him (is that possible??!). The guy who was casing my house also gave me a website to look at.
It looks legit.... but if you're serious, I'm sure you can get together a website and a uniform and all that stuff...
So.... besides telling me I was dumb to let him in (I know that now), is this okay? Is this legit? Should he have even asked to come in to look at my house? ... He even told me how easy it would be to break into my back door.
You got anything?

Oddly, the link to the BBB report on their company is broken in the FAQ, but they are listed:

I called 311 (non emergency). I think they're gonna send someone out.
It seems legit enough.
Just weird.
Seriously...anyone? anyone?

That seems to be going around a lot lately... same type of people came to our house selling, except they were "Platinum Protect" and also based out of Utah. They wanted to install for free, stick a sign in our yard, 5 year contract, $40 a month. Of course, we said no. Is that the same kind of deal the guy was telling you about? Those guys have seriously been all over our neighborhood lately. Anyway, total scam from what research I've done.

I told one of these guys to get the fuck off my porch, or I'd call the cops.
He kept talking and got pushier, so I held up my snub nose .38 to the glass and he got going pretty quick.
These assholes are at best pushy salesmen of inferior products and at worst casing out houses for burglaries.

Cassie, exACTly the same thing. I'd like to ask my neighbors, but I don't want to go over when it's dark, lest I do the same thing to them! I wonder if he tells everyone that he's doing a neighbor's yard and "you could have yours for free if you let me put this sign in your door."
Nick, he was pretty pushy. When I told him I wanted his card and would call later, he wanted to know what sorts of questions I had. I told him I just wanted to talk to my roommate, but he kept asking (pushing) as to what else I would want to know.
And, really, I got nothing. My house does not have much.
I'm a little relieved that it sounds like he's probably just a bad (pushy) salesman.
