Oh yeah, I remember reading about that a few months ago. It's a pretty amazing story. It's just crazy to me -- sure, he was old, so it's not a huge surprise. But we're talking about someone who's arguably the most influential musician of the 20th century. The weight of that hit me yesterday.

He lived a pretty hard life, I'm impressed that his body held out as long as it did. I'd love to see a James Brown statue built in his honor.

Alex "Prom Queen" R. says:
My old drummer told me that it his first drum lesson, his teacher said "Go home and buy James Brown's boxed set. If you don't have it by the time you come back next week, you don't have what it takes to play the drums."
We used to cover "Payback," and I was surprised by how hard it was. It's not the notes; there barely are any notes. Each part, looked at separately, is grade-school easy. But to put them all together and make it move...we had to practice that groove for hours. You know how they say of Texas Hold 'Em, "It takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master?" You could say the same about James Brown's grooves.
JB taught me as a guitarist to play the note that needs playing, and not any of the ones who don't.
And that when someone asks if y'all are ready to take it the bridge, y'all better be damn ready to take it to the bridge.
