I went apple picking this past weekend, Shelburne Farms (I don't recommend it. We wanted something close and quick). However, the apples, though they looked nice, don't taste very good. I heard a rumor that the crop was mediocre this year. Last year the apples were amazing... so this rumor is probably true.

We just went to Cider Hill Farms in Amebury on Sunday. I think they are pretty reasonable- unlike places that charge per bag, they charge per pound, so you can get as little or as much as you want. And yummy squash was only 49 cents a pound!

I started a thread on this subject a couple of weeks ago and finally made it to an orchard 2 weeks ago. We went to an orchard in Harvard, MA and had quite an experience.
It was really beautiful there and we made life-long friends with the owners. When we arrived we were told that if we were to buy anything that we wouldn't be given a receipt since the register was broken all day. I looked down at the register and from where I was standing could see a small bit of paper jammed in it. I said I had a pair of tweezers in my purse and within 10 seconds had retrieved the piece of paper and the register was working again. Psych!
They let us go through the orchard for free and even let us hang around after they closed so we could watch the sunset over their barn.
It was a lot fun and has a great story attached to it.

I drove out to Ashby Apples this past weekend. Disclaimer: my friend knows the guy who owns the place, so we got a discount. Even without a discount, though, the apples are $6.50 a peck. They have five varieties and the ones I tried were all really good! Plus we got to have a nice chat with the owner about apple-growing, and about how all the local farmers are working toward forming a co-op for locally grown natural foods. The drive up there was really scenic too, and we drove past a corn maze which we stopped at on the way back! (I don't recommend the corn maze, really, but I'd never done one before.)
They don't have big hay rides or petting zoos or anything, just apples and some homemade products (no cider yet; they're working on getting the equipment set up), but if you want to support a very nice family, you can check them out: http://www.ci.ashby.ma... (Link to town of Ashby agriculture page with address and phone number of the orchard.)

How about where NOT to go? Read my review of Honey Pot Hill Orchards. Maybe that was the place in Stow you decided against. It was a madhouse.

I have a friend who was just at Honey Pot last Sunday; she also said it was insane. Cider Hill was pretty busy, but it was definitely handleable.
It has pigs, though, so be careful. I learned from a movie that pigs totally eat people.

Another option is heading to the North Shore...a few good places there. Russell's Orchard in Ipswich on the way to Crane Beach...to die for cider donuts you must eat at least a dozen! :) They offer other apple baked goodies too like killer apple pie, fantastic cider, etc. If you're bringing kids along they have a small petting farm and do hayrides on weekends (i think). Oh and they do have some apple wines there as well.

A good source for apple places is http://www.mass.gov/ag...
Nashoba Winery is also good as previously mentioned...I liked that they had a wide variety of apples for picking.

If you don't feel like driving too far there's the Lookout Farms in South Natick just off Route 16. There's a cute little train that takes you around the farm to pick golden apples, fiji, asian pears, and as an added treat 'PUMPKINS' since the holiday is coming up.

I have to get Cider Hill's back on the donut tip: I doubt you can really go wrong with cider donuts at any of these places, but Cider Hill's are not to be underestimated. Them donuts is good.
Also: Cider Hill has this gouda spread stuff, right? And it's the best food ever made. Ever. It's better than bacon. I don't have the adjectives to describe how good that gouda spread is. It's not made specifically by Cider Hill, so for all I know it's at all the other places too, and if you ever find it, buy all of it and then write me a nice thank-you note. You'll not only thank me for it, you'll probably want to marry me.
(But do not buy the bacon-flavored gouda spread. You'd think that adding bacon would be the only thing that could make gouda spread better, but something goes wrong with that combination and it doesn't work after all. Weird, and sad.)

I second Nashoba...that's really the best place because not only do they have a ton of different kinds of apples but you can also taste wines--and they have just started selling REALLY good beer as well. Have gone twice this season! Once for apples and back again for a company outing and to buy more beer!
