24 Useful, 2 Funny, and 8 Cool
Upper East Side Living
See All Lists1. Centolire Cafe & Panini
New York, NY 10028
(212) 734-7711
Category: Italian
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
I went with a friend and her young baby on a week night. After seeing the formal interior, I was worried that it would be inappropriate for a child. But the waiters were very accommodating (with a kid's menu and high chair) and friendly; and as…More »
2. La Galette Cafe
Awesome, family-run Senegalese/African restaurant. The stretch of Lexington Avenue around 100th/101st street has a few restaurants that seem interesting, such as Joy Burger Bar and Itzocan Bistro. Half-way down 100th street is the cozy, immaculate…More »
3. Wankel's Hardware
New York, NY 10128
(212) 369-1200
Category: Hardware Stores
Neighborhoods: Upper East Side, Yorkville
A wide array of knickknacks (sometimes on the pricier side) to satisfy almost any apartment's needs--from bathtub plugs and steel wool to paint and flower pots. The staff is helpful, and there are plenty of them around, so that even when it's busy,…More »
4. 88 Cleaners
New York, NY 10128
(212) 348-5063
Categories: Sewing & Alterations, Dry Cleaning & Laundry
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
I had no complaints about the quality of the cleaning, the prices, or the turn-around time. But I made the mistake of asking the woman who works here if she could recommend a tailor in the area for a suit. I didn't realize that this shop also did…More »
5. Pavlos Shoe Repair
Knowledgeable, skilled shoe repairers. Even when they are busy, they have been willing to do a quick shine or repair when I'm in a rush. Helpful and friendly. Prices are good.
6. Elm Health
New York, NY 10128
(212) 348-8500
Categories: Grocery, Drugstores, Health Markets
Neighborhoods: Upper East Side, Yorkville
A moderate-sized selection of natural foods at very good prices. Elm Health also has a sandwich and juice bar. Although the store carries vitamins, they have a weak selection of natural supplements. As other reviewers have noted, the employees are…More »
7. 161 E 88th St
Apparently the super. reads Yelp and found this review. He left a note about this review under my door in the middle of the night telling me to move out of the building.

8. Chicken Festival
New York, NY 10028
(212) 988-2844
Category: Latin American
Neighborhoods: Upper East Side, Yorkville
So I'll compare this place to Pio Pio, which seems to have set the standard against which all Peruvian chicken joints are judged.
First, this place looks like Pio Pio. Same long, narrow shape of room, probably seats about the same number of people,…More »
9. Lee's Dry Cleaning & Laundry
New York, NY 10128
(212) 289-0271
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
A hole-in-the-wall shop with good dry cleaning (never used the laundry service). The dry cleaning is comparable to other stores in the area, but the friendly service makes this place stand out.
10. Yw Custom Tailors
New York, NY 10128
(212) 410-3013
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
A friendly, neighborhood tailor shop. The alterations are precise and well done. A bit pricey (though good for this neighborhood)--For example, altering a shirt hem costs ~$15.
11. Food Liberation Health Market
New York, NY 10128
(212) 348-2286
Categories: Convenience Stores, Health Markets
Neighborhood: Upper East Side
For its cozy size, this place has a very nice selection of gluten free foods and health supplements at decent prices. There is also a juice bar in the back. Note that the store has a "no cell phone" policy, which seems unfair because the person…More »
12. Slice, The Perfect Food
New York, NY 10021
(212) 249-4353
Categories: Pizza, Gluten-Free, Vegan
Neighborhoods: Upper East Side, Yorkville
The service is friendly and very responsive to any food allergies. I ordered a simple rice-crust pizza with tomato sauce and part-skim mozzarella. The cheese and sauce were good, but the thin crust (which is made from rice flour and xanthan gum)…More »
