See All Lists1. The 6 Train
Bronx, NY 10461
Category: Public Transportation
Neighborhood: Van Nest
Note: The figure below is not drawn to scale, Art Vandalay. Yes, I know the cars are not lined up, but I spent too much time on this ASCII art and I'm stickin to it.
At the Pelham Bay Station Hub, this "artwork" represents subway cars # 4 and 5. I…More »
2. Pelham Bay Pit Stop No 6
Bronx, NY 10461
(718) 239-1080
Category: Convenience Stores
Neighborhood: Pelham Bay
When I was in 7th grade, this place was a safe haven for purchasing pornographic magazines: Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, Cheri, High Society, etc. Mind you, this is when I was rockin' a Commodore 64 and I relied on a Smith Corona word processor to…More »
3. Villa Barone Restaurant
Bronx, NY 10461
(718) 828-0560
9/13/07
Villa Barone is both a restaurant and pizzeria. Since this is my hood, I have a minor bias towards this place. Growing up eating their pizza has set me up to scrutinize quality of Manhattan pizza (Two Boots? Rays? Blech!) . Located right…More »
4. Pelham Bay Mini Market
Bronx, NY 10461
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Convenience Stores
Neighborhood: Pelham Bay
Although this store (formerly Optimo, Te Amo or whatever bodega name it had) has changed ownership several times in thirty years, this store is Pelham Bay's de facto standard for visitors and natives. Need a soda? Gum? Dutchmaster? Besides Villa…More »
5. Sophie's Diner
I have neglected this diner for many reasons, but none of them were good. It's just a diner; how good could the food be? My wife and I decided to give this place a try.
Upon entering, the restaurant is very nice inside and provides a warm, hospitable…More »
6. Gana Wine & Spirits

Category: Beer, Wine & Spirits
Neighborhood: Pelham Bay

It is a small liquor store which does not seem to belong in the neighborhood (I forget if it was a fish market before). The selection is very limited. I only buy wine here if I am desperate and need to hit the bottle as I jump off the subway.…More »
7. Peghe Deli
Bronx, NY 10461

Neighborhood: Pelham Bay
Here's a Greek deli.
No idea to pronounce.
A real bodega.
Forget Dunkin Donuts (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Instead of the microwaved egg and sausage sandwiches, I go here for breakfast sandwiches now.
Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to present the world of…More »
8. Dunkin Donuts Baskin Robbins

Whether you have to hop onto the 6 train or one of the many buses in the Pelham Bay hub, this place is a staple for residents and visitors. This Dunkin D is in an excellent location for the morning rush. There is nothing alarming to point out, since…More »
9. Flowers by Anthony
I came after work for Valentines Day last year and waited in line with other saps for this Hallmark Holiday...
"Who's next?"
"Can I get a $25 arrangement?"
"Sure." (putting together some carnations)
"Oooh, can you throw a few roses in there?"
"Uhh,…More »
10. Lee Xing Chinese Restrnt
I wish I had more hands so I could give this place four thumbs down.
This is a dingy place that has two tables if you want to dine in. My brother and I have done this a few times when we needed a quick bite and had little cash.
Chicken wings and rice…More »
11. Giovanni's Restrnt & Pizzeria
Warning! Do not come here if you want a slice of pizza. You won't get one, even if you beg for it. Giovanni's sells only by the pie. A personal pan pizza is a nice touch for less than $4. I remember these as a favorite, when I was a little boy.

Category: Dry Cleaning & Laundry

This laundromat is located across the street from Bonavita Key Food supermarket and next to Balsamo Funeral Home. If you took a subway, it would be in between the Buhre Avenue and Pelham Bay Park Station stops. If you drive it can be a nightmare; the…More »
13. Key Food
Bona Vita Key Food! "The Good Life" says Kanye.
The good: The produce is good. The supermarket is clean. I rarely have to wait long for checking out. I went yesterday afternoon at 6 PM and they were 8 empty cashiers, waiting for work. Nice.
The bad:…More »
14. Di Como Restaurant
"Formaggio? Tell me when... I love this stuff so much I sprinkle it on my cereal..." That was one of the waiters asking if we wanted grated cheese on our pasta dishes...

15. Honey's Thai Pavilion
When I first saw the awning, I was thinking of doing a pool of how long it would take for the business to fail and post the "for rent" sign. This area is terrible in terms of restaurant turnover, as I remember the last two businesses this used to be.…More »
16. Zeppieri & Sons Bakery
This bakery has been around since I was a prepubescent boy (actually a lot longer). I always walk in and I am greeted by young women behind the counter (I don't remember seeing a man back there). I've ordered fresh Italian bread loaves, rainbow…More »
17. Indian Castle - CLOSED

It's a grand opening for an Indian restaurant in my hood. I have to try it!
This place is very bare inside. It's like they moved in yestersday Although there are a handful of tables to sit, I chose to take out and so I ordered chicken tikka…More »
18. Top Tortillas
I would hate to sound like a fascist ignoramus, but I've noticed that race does not always correlate with authentic food. For example, when I walk into a Japanese restaurant and see a non Japanese sushi chef I give a double-take and scrutinize it's…More »

I've ordered their 3 foot Italian and American subs for a house party. They were pretty great. Their potato salad is also awesome. I easily forget that I'm not eating meat...

21. Lehigh Wines and Liquors
Bronx, NY 10461
(718) 863-2990
Category: Beer, Wine & Spirits

Lehigh is a good sized store and gives me the opportunity to look for new wines while I pick up my favorite bargain wines. Before you judge, it ain't cheap drink everyday, man. The staff is composed of college (or deceptively younger) students.…More »
22. Chirping Chicken
Although this place is a "chain" it's pretty good. Not Popeye's good, though. Meals such as a quarter or half chicken meals come with sides and a pita. These are a bargain for lunch.
The menu also includes chicken cutlets, chicken fingers, chicken…More »

City Island: Bronx, NY (6)To the misguided souls who think the Bronx has nothing to offer. You are only half right. |
Pedro Yelp Map (324)Every review in a list so I can see them all on one map. This may take some time to load. |
Demystifying Korean food (27)Sometimes there are restaurants that are under represented on Yelp because the entire menu is in Korean. Or maybe because people are just afraid to try it. Some on this list are popular and some are very obscure.Good luck. |
ROTD love! (5)You read and voted for them (or maybe just voted for them because I am great). Here is a list with my "Review of the Day" nods. |
What Smoking Ban? (7)In 2003, Mayor Michael Bloomberg enacted the smoking ban in NYC. Screw you, homeboy, I'm smoking here. Don't be surprised if the list is very short. |
The Art of Bowling (10)As a bowling enthusiast, I have endured the same trials and tribulations you have during league and open bowling. Whether you like to drink and bowl in epileptic seizure-inducing lighting conditions with music or bowl seriously in daylight and silence, this list is for you. Please keep in mind:(1) Mind your manners! Respect single lane courtesy; like crossing the street, look both ways. If it's clear, start your approach. If someone has 7+ strikes, stop what you're doing and stare. It may be historic! If it's me, I have the right of way! (2) If you bowl casually more than once a year, buy your own shoes. Trust me, the ROI is there! (3) Strike for show, spare for dough. The fastest way to improve your scores is through picking up spares. (4) Guys, don't use the pink ball. Only douche bags do. Learn how to bowl the real way. On my Yelp radar: Gun Post Lanes Harlem Lanes Playdrome Bowling Center New Roc Bowling Vannest Lanes Bowlerland |
Ascii art - Why read when you can have pictures? (48)Thanks to my short attention span, sometimes I don't want to read. I want to see pictures. Here are my reviews which have some eye candy. Yes, time well spent. Not all are original. Not all are good. These two Yelpers have inspired me to do the same. Srini V (New York, NY): many excellent reviews followed by art. Ed to the M (San Francisco, CA): he doesn't always use ascii art, but I love this review. http://www.yelp.com/bi... |
Work Out (5)I generated a list of NYC gyms/active life because I see this recurring question in talk... |
I'm not Tigger Woods. (4)As I try to play at different courses and try to live vicariously through PGA players, here is working list of golf courses. Playing on the course and practicing on the driving range are two different beasts. The golf course is almost heavenly. Here are some pointers. If you don't know what you are doing, get lessons. Stat. If you still stink on the course, be ready to pick up your ball and keep the pace going. Don't be the slow poke holding up play. The ranger will bump you! Cigars, beer and friends are totally necessary. Unless you're so good you can just walk on. Boo to you. |
