The first time I came here was for a special event in the restaurant. I was so shocked at the awesome atmosphere of the lobby I almost missed my appointment because I was trying to suss out whether there was something special going on or if the lobby…More »
2. Tea Spot
New York, NY 10012
(212) 505-1248
Category: Tea Rooms
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
This is a great cafe. Not only do they have a lot of teas, which are wonderful, they also have good treats for ok prices. Any tea they have can be an iced or frozen tea, too. This place is great in both summer and winter.
Others have complained…More »
3. 88 Orchard
New York, NY 10002
(212) 228-8880
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
By the time I came to 88 Orchard I had literally been to 30 different cafes and coffee shops in the city looking for a great place to write. So obviously I am not easily impressed and, honestly, I come at every place with low expectations these…More »
4. La Sala 78 Cafe / Gallery
New York, NY 10040
(212) 304-0667
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Juice Bars & Smoothies
Neighborhood: Washington Heights
Somehow in the past year or so, a million people cottoned on to the idea that Inwood and Washington Heights lacked good cafes with free Internet and a downtown vibe tempered by local flavor. At least four have opened above Dyckman, one already…More »
5. Hotel Metro
New York, NY 10001
(212) 947-2500
Not a review of the hotel or the bar but of the little lounge just off the lobby. In my neverending search for cool places to write I popped into the Hotel Metro one day just to see what they had to offer. Imagine my happiness when I found a cute…More »
6. De Cafe
New York, NY 10034
(212) 567-7657
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhoods: Inwood, Washington Heights
I've said many times that we need places like this in Inwood -- cafe-style coffee & tea joints with good food, great drinks, and free wifi. It also helps if the place is cute, has nice decor, and a friendly staff. de Cafe hits all the right notes;…More »
7. 17 Bleecker - CLOSED
Though this place isn't much to look at, it has a lot going for it (if you're a writer). Free wifi, a decent number of outlets, both table/chair and couch options, and it isn't overrun with NYU students.
The 17 Bleecker folks didn't spend a lot on…More »
8. Sip
New York, NY 10025
(212) 316-2747
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Lounges
Neighborhood: Manhattan Valley
Sip appears to be an awesome, awesome place for writers and workers with a few caveats. The place is small/cozy but not cramped, has many different seating options, outlets and wifi for the laptop luggers, decent prices on food and drink, and serves…More »
9. Think Coffee
New York, NY 10012
(212) 228-6226
Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
I've been to Think Coffee several times and first went on the basis of the reviews here. I am not disappointed. I really like the place - the atmosphere is good, I like that there's a variety of places to sit, the teas and coffees are yummy, and…More »
10. Subtle Tea
New York, NY 10016
(212) 481-4713
Categories: Tea Rooms, Coffee & Tea

Oh Subtle Tea, you are almost perfect! Why can't you be more perfect?
Upon entering this cute little tea shop I was struck by the big communal table right in the middle of everything. This table dominates the space and leaves little room for any…More »
11. Soy Luck Club
New York, NY 10014
(212) 229-9898
Categories: Vegetarian, Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: West Village
Oh Soy Luck Club, why are you such a tiny place? I would love it above all things to sit inside you and write and drink your soy chai lattes all day.
But you are so small, and it isn't always easy to find a seat, and I feel bad sitting in small…More »
12. Holiday Inn Express New York
I've never stayed at this hotel, so my review is strictly limited to the lobby.
I love writing in hotel lobbies with free wifi. Not only do you get some free Internet action, but you also get to see people from all over coming and going. If you get…More »
13. Residence Inn by Marriott Times Square
New York, NY 10018
(212) 768-0007
Category: Hotels
Neighborhoods: Murray Hill, Theater District
I've never actually stayed in this hotel. This review is just about the lounge on the third floor.
The lounge is a good place to sit and write. It's quite large and has a variety of places to sit. Couches, cushy chairs around tables, straight-back…More »
14. W New York - Union Square
New York, NY 10003
(212) 253-9119
Category: Hotels
Neighborhoods: Flatiron, Union Square, Gramercy
Not a review of the hotel itself, as I've never stayed here, but for the little lobby area right outside of the restaurant (Olives). I came here with a friend the other day to sit and chat and, as we were sitting and chatting, I figured I would try…More »
15. Indian Road Cafe
New York, NY 10034
(212) 942-7451
Categories: Coffee & Tea, American (New)
Neighborhood: Inwood
Yes, it's great to have a cafe like this in the nabe. But don't get too excited, there are a few drawbacks. Still 4 stars, though!
So here's the thing about Indian Road Cafe -- the people it hopes to draw in are of a certain type. Affluent people…More »
16. Jou Jou
New York, NY 10032
(212) 781-2222
Categories: Coffee & Tea, American (Traditional), Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Washington Heights
I'm willing to forgive a cafe a lot of things if its open 24 hours, as Jou Jou is. I can ignore the uncomfy chairs and the not great food. Plus, there's free wi-fi! How awesome is that? Their drinks are pretty awesome, too.
17. Grounded
New York, NY 10014
(212) 647-0943
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: West Village
So... it's been a while since I've been to Grounded. I used to like it well enough, but the whole closing early thing was always an issue. I came here today after visiting a friend in the neighborhood and find myself... underwhelmed. They just…More »

18. Society Coffee

Most of what I said in my previous review still stands. The update is for this: 11pm closing Mon - Sat, Society? Really? SIGH. You are not a proper cafe.
Also, the food here is still overpriced.
Still, it's miles above Amrita Cafe down the street…More »

19. Esperanto Cafe - CLOSED
New York, NY 10012
(212) 475-8900
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
I know a review where I say "Ditto Kristine R" is hardly useful, but there you go. Esperanto is a cozy place with fair to middling drinks and food. The big pluses are that they have free wifi and are open 24 hours. Troublesome aspects are the…More »
20. Cosi
New York, NY 10003
(212) 260-1507
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
3.5 stars, actually. This location has some drawbacks but is nice, overall. If you're looking for a place to sit, have a coffee, do some work on your laptop, and enjoy the sun streaming in from the large, street-facing windows, this isn't a bad…More »
21. Cosi
New York, NY 10023
(212) 595-5616
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Upper West Side
The Cosi that was at 76th & B'way closed and reopened a block away. I guess the employees got tired of that smelly basement. Plus, the corporation probably wanted to turn the place into a Cosi 2.0.
At a Cosi 2.0, instead of having a more cafe-like…More »
22. Keko Cafe
New York, NY 10016
(212) 685-4360
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Breakfast & Brunch
Neighborhood: Murray Hill
It's hard not to compare Keko to the Subtle Tea just a doorway down. It's smaller and a little less charming, but still a cute and serviceable tea shop. There is free wifi, which makes me a happy Yelper. Along one wall there are a few outlets for…More »
23. Sympathy for the Kettle - CLOSED
New York, NY 10009
(212) 979-1650
Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: East Village
This is a cute little tea shop. They have a great selection of stuff to drink while there and to take home. It's on the expensive side, though, so maybe not best for a casual tea. Or for when you just want a drink, not an experience.
For writers:…More »
24. Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers
Never stayed at this hotel. My review is strictly of the lobby and strictly so I can add this to my free wi-fi list.
Yes, kids, they have free wifi in the lobby (turbonet). (Why they don't have it in the rooms is a mystery to me.) There are places…More »
25. Amazon Cafe
Brooklyn, NY 11231

My love for Amazon Cafe knows no end. They make amazing wraps for breakfast and lunch, their smoothies are the best, and they are all about food that is good and good for you. And, as another revewer mentioned, free smoothes and wraps after you buy…More »
26. Lonelyville Coffee - CLOSED
Very charming cafe with excellent coffee. Excellent. The other drinks are good, too, but the coffee is the best.
This is a medium-sized cafe, so it's good for a group of 2-4 writers to huddle together (or one to hunker down and get things done).…More »
27. Naidre's Cafe
Brooklyn, NY 11215
(718) 965-7585
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Sandwiches
Neighborhood: Park Slope
I like Naidre's a lot - the food is excellent, the smoothies to die for, and the desserts tempt me every time. However, everything is a little pricier than I want for a local cafe, making it more of a special treat than an everyday haunt.
For…More »
28. Tea Lounge - CLOSED
Brooklyn, NY 11201
(718) 624-5683
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Music Venues

I'm not much impressed with this Tea Lounge location. Though it is quite a nice, comfortable venue with non-obnoxious music (so far) and a nice variety of things to eat and drink, the Tea Lounge falls down on several aspects that are too important…More »
29. Panera Bread
Craziness - that's the only way to explain a Manhattan girl going all the way over to Hoboken to go to a chain bread cafe. Crazy! But it's Panera, and Panera is really good. Sure, you can get bread just as good or better in the city. And there…More »

Neighborhoods You Most Likely Don't Know (26)New York City is awesome, but how much of it do you really know? Have you ever been above 125th street? Or even above 100th? Do you know how high the street numbers go in Manhattan? How about Queens? Ever been anywhere in Queens besides Astoria? Brooklyn outside of Williamsburg? The Bronx AT ALL? Probably not. And that's a shame. New York has a lot of hidden treasures that aren't even really hidden, they're just not hip or popular. Break out of your safe spaces and visit a new neighborhood. Here's a guide. |

Chains You Hate To Love (or just Hate) (18)You're in New York City, center of the world. You have your choice of any kind of food from any country or culture on earth at prices ranging from ridiculously low to just ridiculous. Why, then, do you have that Dunkin Donut in your hand? And is that a Starbucks coffee sleeve in your back pocket? And you're going to the Olive Garden?! Somehow the chains keep their grip on us, for good or bad. |
When Manhattan Sucks (13)It always seems like NYC is being slowly taken over by great evil. There's a Starbucks every five feet, a chain restaurant every other block, and neighborhoods that once had character are succumbing to suburban sameness. That's lame, Manhattan. Just lame! |
