Berkeley, CA 94705
(510) 849-2701
Categories: Italian, Sandwiches, Delis, Cheese Shops, Grocery, Meat Shops, Ethnic Food
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
When I was in Italy for about a week, I couldn't stop eating the sandwiches from little food stands and counters all over the place. I was almost afraid to waste stomach space on anything else.
So when I moved into Berkeley's Elmwood district at…More »

SHRIMP DUMPLINGS!
Yes, Shen Hua has them, and they're really fucking good. Five-star good. There's nothing all that innovative about them - no cream cheese or foie gras - just shrimp and dumpling and goodness. For maximum joy, use the three table…More »
3. Filippo's
Berkeley, CA 94705
(510) 644-3848
Category: Italian
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
I don't agree with the extremity of some of the negative reviews here. There's nothing conspicuously bad about Filippo's. It's just that there's nothing conspicuously great about it. If it were in the middle of nowhere I might give it as much as…More »
4. The Beanery
Berkeley, CA 94705
(510) 665-1404
Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
This was my default study spot when I lived nearby, and I still come back semi-regularly now that I don't.
The Beanery definitely wins the atmosphere prize among south Berkeley cafes. Somehow they achieve a clean, we've-got-it-all-together look that…More »

One thing to settle first:
Dear LaMed,
Will you guys please stop putting those ridiculous slices of cheese and fruit in the corner of every dish you serve? Nobody eats them - I promise - and I think I'm not the only one who finds them annoying. If…More »
6. Holy Land Restaurant

Category: Middle Eastern
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
I really want to give Holy Land more than three stars. But I want them to earn it.
I love the staff and the place itself and so I want them to do well, but for now I think I'll let other patrons fuel their success. One factor is that they cost more…More »
7. Manpuku
Berkeley, CA 94705
(510) 848-2536
Categories: Sushi Bars, Japanese
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
Normally I don't go for sushi when I'm really hungry. I either don't get full or end up spending way more than I anticipated. Not a problem with Manpuku, a place that's actually pretty high on my list for when I feel like stuffing myself.
This was…More »
8. Yak and Yeti - CLOSED
Berkeley, CA 94705
(510) 981-8145
Category: Himalayan/Nepalese
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
There are several good Nepalese restaurants in Berkeley, and this isn't one of them. Not only is the food here a lot blander than at the other three I've been to, but it's also more expensive.
It's cool to eat on their second level because the tables…More »
9. Gordo Taqueria

Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
I swear I'm the kind of person who would never go somewhere like Chipotle over somewhere like Gordo. But in the case of Gordo, well... I'd rather go to Chipotle. I'm sorry, it's just true.
Gordo gets a high two stars because there's nothing really…More »
10. Trattoria La Siciliana

Category: Italian
Neighborhoods: Elmwood, Claremont
Even if you live in North Beach this is worth a trip. I had the honor of living two blocks away for a while.
The reason they don't take cards, or serve you as quickly as you'd like, is that they don't have to. They know we need them more than they…More »

QUAINT CHINESE IN COMPETITIVE ELMWOOD AREA MAINTAINS AN EDGE IN COMFORT
When I lived on College, my housemates and I never actually knew the names of Elmwood's two Chinese restaurants. Shen Hua was "Close Chinese" and King Yen was "Far Chinese."

The Euclid Strip (7)None of the sophistication of the Gourmet Ghetto.None of the personality of Telegraph. None of the depth and variety of Elmwood. You might say Euclid Avenue is the runt of Berkeley's N-S oriented commercial centers. And I seriously doubt that anyone would argue with you. But one thing's for sure: it's the one I have to walk through twice everyday. If you find yourself on Northside and are even half the slave to convenience that I am, you should find this guide very helpful indeed. Additions to come. |
Kebab Kwest: Bay Area (13)The mighty food culture that is the pride of many a Northern Californian has an Achilles heel indeed. If you are looking for some truly outstanding meat on a stick, you probably should try driving 360 miles south of here. But if you don't have time for that, this list is here to help you sort out the bad from the not-quite-so-bad (okay, sometimes good).I have taken many pains to find you the few diamonds in the rough, and these reviews document most of the process. And keep in mind: just because something's not on this list, doesn't mean I haven't tried it. Rather, it probably means I've tried it and felt so apathetic that I forgot to review it. So although I plan to add some new reviews as I continue risking my valuable stomach space, I suggest that you leave the Kebab Kwesting to me and consider this list exhaustive for now. |
Student's Guide to Berkeley Cafes (8)So it's come to this, has it? You aren't just using Yelp to figure out where to take your date or where to celebrate your birthday; now you want to know the best spots to suffer in. After nearly five years as a professional masochist (i.e. student) in this town, I feel I am highly qualified to guide you.Since in many cases my review is not based on studyability alone, that factor is reflected in the order of the items on this list. That is, the first item is the best place to study (or write Yelp reviews); the last is the worst, regardless of my star ratings. Check back in the future, as I will continue to update and add to this. |
Ventura Boulevard: The Little Middle East (13)For the first 18 years of my life, Ventura was the X axis of my world. (Balboa was the Y, but that's another list.) After spending much of the last four years away, I've finally identified what I miss most about L.A.It's not tacos; it's kebabs. I've come to an informed decision that L.A. offers the best Middle Eastern food on this side of the Atlantic... and Ventura is where it's all at. So next time your friends from over the hill make some pretentious crack about the valley being so plain, take them to one of these. Many additions to this list are still to come... just as soon as I get time to review more. Order is from east to west. |
