What/Why:
Hey Hiking Pacers!

Since we now have a number of newcomers as well as seasoned hikers, we are going to divide the next few hikes into two groups; one beginner hike and one more intermediate level hike.  The meeting location and starting point is the same for both groups.  Hopefully we can accomodate more members!  Can't wait to see everyone on Sunday!!

Hike #6 - 09/12/10

Have you all cooled off enough from last week's heat wave and VERY HOT hike?  Admittedly, it was a more challenging hike than expected with the added challenge of the heat.  If you have been sticking with the program since Hike #1, it would be more of an "intermediate" level hike than a beginner.  If you had a tough time, don't fear we have an easier option for you this week at Chantry Flats.

Beginner Hike: Sturtevant Falls
It's a leisurely 3.7 mile hike with just 700 feet elevation gain/loss.  It is complete with babbling brooks and a nice waterfall.

Intermediate Hike: Hoegees Camp Loop
This is a relatively flat 5.1 mile hike with roughly 1100 feet elevation gain/loss.  It's mostly shaded with a nice stream.

***Adventure Pass REQUIRED for this hike for EACH car so try to carpool and plan ahead by picking up a day pass ($5) or an annual pass ($30)***

Meeting Location: Take the Santa Anita exit from the 210 toward Arcadia.  Stay on the Santa Anita Canyon Road traveling North until it ends at Chantry Flats. We will meet at the bathroom like last time at the top of the paved trailhead near the entrance to the parking lot.

Again, carpooling and early arrival is highly recommended as this place gets super busy even at 6 am.  In fact, last time we came at 6:45 and snagged the last parking spot in the parking lot while many people had to park down the road and walk to the trailhead.  I recommend parking at the REI parking lot, which is just a few miles from the location, and driving up in one car if you decide to carpool.

For those who want to meet at the REI parking lot and carpooling up to Chantry, I would propose that you get to the parking lot at 6:30 am.  Kevin and I will swing by there at 6:30 to see if there is anyone who would like a ride with us.

FYI, adventure passes are sold at the chantry flat parking lot in the pack station.  but they dont list being open until 8am.  theres a note on the website that says:

The Forest Service requires an Adventure Pass to park at all "developed areas" in the forest. We sell passes as a courtesy during our regular business hours.

*NOTE : The parking lot at Chantry fills up early and it can be difficult to find parking. It is advisable to carpool up. If the store is closed when you arrive, simply park in our lot and leave $5.00. No pass is necessary to park at the Pack Station.

In regards to Tyson's post above, I WOULD NOT suggest going to Chantry without an Adventure Pass in hopes of finding a spot at the Pack Station lot and leaving them $5.  The Pack Station only has a dirt lot, but since they are not open til 8:00 AM, the information above is irrelevant to our group.  All the information you will need to purchase an Adventure Pass is in the description above.  If you are driving a car up to Chantry, please have an Adventure Pass!  You have been warned.

We will and have been doing a lot of hikes starting from Chantry so an annual pass would be highly recommended so that you don't need to get a daily pass everytime.

I'm with Erin! I was so sore from last week's hike...I rushed after the hike to go to the LA county fair $1 admission... and walked all day till 9pm! so I was in pain for several days after that!! I'm going to try and make it tomorrow, hopefully I'll wake up!

9/11/2010 Ryan "Foodoofus" M. says:

Debbie I might be interested in carpooling it up with you guys. Considering I don't know if Lily or Ching is gonna definitely go for sure.

Ok, Kevin and I should have at least one seat available in our car so we will be swinging by REI Arcadia at 6:30AM to see if there is anyone there that would like to hop in with us and drive up to Chantry.

can I still get an adventure pass online today? or would that be too late?

9/11/2010 Julia V. says:

Lily, if you stretch a TON after a hard work out, it really helps alot.  If it feels tight or sore, stretch it again.  I went on the 40mi bike ride (without ever being on a long ride before) with Kebbie and the hike the next day.  I didn't think I would make it to the hike but I just stretched throughout the day - I never knew stretching could do such wonders before then.

Lily, it's definitely too late to buy online now, they mail the pass to you.  You can go to the link for local vendors and find a place near you that sells the pass.

Julia, you are right, stretching AFTER a workout is key.  Stretching after is actually more important than stretching before.  Also, doing the activity more often will also help your body adapt and you won't feel as sore the more you do it.

9/11/2010 Lily "Praise the Lard" A. says:

Thanks Debbie! I'll try to hit up REI after work.

To those of you who tried very hard to meet us but had problems, I am so happy to hear you still hiked at the location you came to be it Eaton or Chantry or some other place...the point of this group is to get you all hiking weekly regardless of if you can hike with our group each time. If you are able to try and do a 30-45 minute hike during the week too in your neighborhood to keep your endurance up please add that to your schedules...see you all next Sunday.
