What/Why:
The Seattle Cheese Festival will return for the fifth year, May 16-17th 2009. As artisanal cheese production grows, so does the festival! Come taste more than 200 cheeses from local and international producers along the cobblestone street of Pike Place Market. The Seattle Cheese Festival is the first of its kind on the West Coast with artisanal cheese at center stage.

Planning for the 2009 festival is currently underway.  Check back in February or March for more details or browse our site for information about last year's festival.

There is usually a fee for the wine tent, like $5 or something.  Tons of free samples.  And if you want to take a seminar or see a demo, sign up early!  This year they are having a great mozzarella demo!

2/19/2009 Ian "pimpinserious" M. says:

Cheese!

I've been a couple years, but never feel like I've stayed long enough to sample enough different kinds of cheeses--probably because of the thick crowd that attends--especially if it's 80+ degrees like it was last year!

Post-cheese cocktails or wine.... possibly. It's still almost 3 months away so I'm not making any definite plans this early in the game ;)

2/19/2009 Amanda "PBF" Y. says:

Um, it's cheese. You bet your sweet ass I'll be there.

Hope I can make it this year! Last time I went, I couldn't believe how full I got off of scarfing down bits of cheese!

3/5/2009 Alison "call me Ali instead" V. says:

Ugh!  I've been trying to make it to this for 3 years now!  The past 2 years I've had family in town and this year I graduate on Saturday so even *more* family will be here.  I guess I will be going next year....

3/5/2009 Brian V. says:

oh helllz yeah. This time im taking a cooking class.

3/5/2009 Ian "pimpinserious" M. says:

Ali, go on Sunday, then!  It'd be a fun thing to do with family who might be sticking around through Sunday.  Last year the weather was beautiful.  Hot, in fact.  Not that this is any indication of what the weather might be like this year, of course.

3/5/2009 Carly "wine princess aka Aunt Cardy" L. says:

3/10/2009 Ian S. says:

There are lactose intolerance pills?

3/18/2009 Amanda "PBF" Y. says:

I just wanted to come back to this event and say, "I love cheese."

3/24/2009 Kat "everything is totally fine" F. says:

Yeah, they're called lactaid or something.  I buy the store brand at whatever drugstore, take one right before I start eating, no worries.

5/12/2009 Matt "The Nickname" W. says:

Two years ago at this festival, I saw the table with Cougar Gold cheese. I cautiously approached the table, looking for price tags, and, trying to be conversational, I asked, "You guys have better prices than that ripoff WSU store at Westlake Center, right?" All commerce activities at the table came to a halt. Eyes narrowed. "We ARE the WSU store at Westlake Center." I was suddenly very interested in what the next table was selling.

Maybe it's been long enough that I could try the festival again. I do love cheese.

5/12/2009 Shirley "Majide!!!" Y. says:

LOL! That's an awesome story Matt. You probably made their shit list. Heheehee

5/13/2009 Timothy "flying to one million" d. says:

i hate fighting for cheese... the crowds, the lines... it's just not worth it.

go grab yourself a baguette from three girls bakery, cheese from Beechers, Slaumi from that martket  over there and "brown bag" it and find yourself a spot, and have an impromptu picnic out on the grass or the sidewalk.

it's just that good.

5/14/2009 Kiran C. says:

This is a great event but gets a bit crowded.  My advice is to get out of the market if the cruise ships dock.  The people from the ships can really over run the place.  The best is if there is a slight drizzle, then mostly the cheese lovers are out and about.  Hope to run into some Yelpers there this weekend.  I will definitely try to catch one of the Mozz making demos.

I'm considering going to this tomorrow. How were the crowds today?

5/16/2009 Kat "everything is totally fine" F. says:

It was a little insane today but soooooo good.  I think that my friend and I sampled half the cheese available and then had to stop because we thought we were going to be sick.  So we went to pike brewery and had beer to settle our stomachs!

5/16/2009 Julie "HoolieBee" B. says:

The crowds were pretty insane. I didn't stay long as I have a pretty low tolerance for clueless crowds of random elbows and strollers. Not worth it...There are many more civil ways to sample excellent cheese.

Ehhh. I'm not really in the mood for crazy big crowds. I think I'll skip it, then. Thanks!

5/16/2009 Emily T. says:

I'm headed there tomorrow in the middle of the afternoon, which I can only assume is the peak time for crowds. I get a bit claustrophobic in big crowds, so we'll see how well I do. Hopefully the cheese is enough to sedate me.

5/16/2009 Amanda "PBF" Y. says:

I'm hoping I can make it down tomorrow for at least a bit.

5/16/2009 Sarah "The Original" B. says:

Yeah it was hellish.  The first sunny weather tourists.  The cruise ship vacationers.  And plenty of drunk idiots.  I have to say, the first two years were great.  A nice crowd, easy to get cheese, not too many drunks.  This was simply unpleasant.  They need a new format for this festival now with the size it is.  I'd skip it unless you already know what cheeses you are after.  BTW, you can buy almost all the cheeses at the local grocery stores.
