Find out who you are and who your ancestors were!

Trace and compile your family history at Northern California's premier genealogy society library.  Volunteer members are available to help you use our extensive resources and online databases. Bring information about an ancestor's family and we will help you find them in the 1920 or 1930 census.  Everyone is welcome the first Saturday of every month. Open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Join us for a FREE Introduction to Genealogy Class every FIRST SATURDAY of the MONTH from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 pm. The next class is on Saturday, January 7, 2012, taught by Craig Siulinski. Please register for this free class: http://tinyurl.com/Jan...

Anybody know how good the records are of Oakland families?  I researched my house and the builder in the history room, but I understand I might find more info in family records.  Anybody ever done this?

I am so jealous of people who can trace their genealogy... I can track my family history all the way back to my Great-grandfather in Texas, who was a first generation freed slave... before that, it's probably impossible, as all slaves were separated from their families and given their master's name, so it's impossible. The other side of my family is Native American, and they didn't exactly keep written records way back when, either.... so sad... my grandmother's grandfather was white (he must have raped a slave, apparently), so if I could only find out his name perhaps I could track his family members down...

I have done mine to my grandmother ( my dads mom ),being she dies young .. & wanted to kno more on just her side .. I met a cousin who told me of my family & a cousin who not only lived nr me , but trace back close to 1200 ad.. all in  Calif .. when one of my cousins , did a DNA test , showed we was White Mtn triibe .. when i called up there , ( in AZ , ) they didnt have records .. & that could of been another tribe .. of the Apache .. well in few months my son will be getting his txes back frm IRS , so I can do mine , his & his father ( my husband .. ) being he doesnt kno much on his dad .. I kno many things ,websites or grps .. some on Myspace , & some on facebook .. If you plan on DNA , dontget the expensive  one .. ( some range to 1000.00) & others just 149.99.. ( thats the best .. ) But like you Samantha there are black in our side of the family too .. Molato .. & Mexican , & Asian.. & black ..( thats frm the DNA test .. ) but majority if NATIVE CALIF ,, since 1300.. all frm Los Angles .
. it depends too , on where the black comes in too ..  could of been when back in Africa when the white ppl  stop off at africa to pick up the slaves to bring to the US .. frm what i kno is , my family came from the Pacifc side ( ocean wise .. ) while others came frm the Alantic side .. also chk either Ancestor's .comhave more free listings too.. & will put on the board ..

I've traced my father's side of the family back to England in the time of King Philip's war, but I need to see documentation to confirm the connection.  I did a DNA 13 marker test and I am a decendant of a founder of East Greenwich Rhode Island so I am am still digging.

Note if you have any family members that were immigrant's and needed to file with the Immigration and Naturalization Office you can request a search of their application and they can provide you a copy for a fee.

I ended up at this event with Ivy R. and I had a great time.  A little bit beginner for me, but still very enjoyable and met some great people.

So a Korean Jew and a Scottish/German/Irish Russian Jew walking into a genealogy class...

I had a great time with Bee D.!  It was definitely an intro class, but even though I had been dabbling for over five years, I still learned some things.  Mary Beth and Craig were so helpful and friendly.  I am definitely considering becoming a member.
