- Come on, a lunar Eclipse only happens once in a red moon! It will be lots of fun!
http://sunearth.gsfc.n...
The total eclipse begins at 7:01 p.m., which is much better than waking up at the butt crack of dawn to view one.
The after party will take place @ the Blue Goose Lounge from 7:30 until whenever. Be sure to sample the new menu items offered there, including the Blue Moon pancakes :-) Mmm...pancakes...

Hey Christopher. Congrats on your very first event! Not only have I never organized one....I've never even GONE to one! Weak huh? ha. But I'm new, so it's ok. I think I may go to this, as I love eclipses. Do you know anything about the parking sich-i-makation? I've always wanted to go to the observatory, but am a bit intimidated by the parking procedure. Any thoughts?

Cris "Sputchman" L. says:
Hey Christopher! I knew you were going to organize something like this!
I'll be watching it from Tilden Park:

Dave "Fearsome" A. says:
Jiminy, as far as the parking sit-a-makation goes, you don't have to make reservations anymore, just drive up and park in the lot, or the adjacent roads. I would prepare to get there a bit early for this. Here's the link to the Griffith.

Dave "Fearsome" A. says:
Cool beans Jiminy.
Chris is there a meeting spot. It's a big place and I might end up there a bit after the eclipse starts. I figured we'd just be watching this from the big lawn out front. Will they have a telescope set up?
02/07/2008
Camille A. says:
chris! Whys it gotta be on a wed?
02/07/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
Dave, I was in fact planning on meeting on the big lawn in the front. If the eclipse is well advertised, it will be pretty crowded, so I might try to get there early to stake out a spot. Maybe Aunny will let me borrow Mr. Shatner so that Yelpers can find our group...
I will definitely be bringing at least one telescope, and maybe two. Or I'll just have one telescope and a pair of astronomical binoculars...BTW anyone who has binoculars should bring them - the moon looks quite good through binoculars.

D'oh! Christopher S!!!! I won't be in LA until the end of the month - the 24th I think. Darn eclipse that won't just wait a few days til I can get down there. . . grumble grumble. . .
02/07/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
No worries Jennifer - remarkably there will be an identical eclipse going on at the exact same time in San Francisco!!! What are the odds? And when you come down to L.A. you'll give a call, right? We'll grab some drinks and catch up!

I think a lunar eclipse at a given time on a specific day of the week only happens once every few hundred years or so...

Well, to be fair, a lot of those people are in San Francisco...I never figured out how to send out PMs to just the L.A. Yelpers.
02/13/2008
Mia L. says:
I'm excited! Parking sounds crazy. Does anyone know which Shuttles or buses actually takes you to the observatory? I'll probably take that route instead!

don't we still park down at the bottom and take a shuttle up? that's what i did on the 4th of july...
02/13/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
The last time I went, I was able to drive all the way up to the observatory and park in the lot up there. This was in November.
02/13/2008
Beth "bonus taco" T. says:
You are right, I checked the website and we can drive all the way up now - yay!

Hari "91% Nerd, 51% Geek, 1% Dork" I. says:
The observatory now allows walk in entry and allows people to drive up to the door. They started this from first week November last year. No more getting timed tickets and taking the $8 shuttle.
Last year's eclipse was exceptionally beautiful, an ethereal experience. I dearly want to be there for the beautiful view to get some good pics. Hopefully I can make it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

But now I'm only falling apart

Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart"

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
All right!
02/13/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
Um...
So, I checked out the 10 day forecast, and it says that next wednesday looks "mostly" cloudy...Now these predictions aren't very good seven days in advance, but people should be prepared for the possibility that seeing conditions may detract from the viewing of the eclipse...
If that happens, I'll drink my sorrows away at BGL.
02/16/2008
Scott L. says:
Christopher-boy!! I'm down in L.A. visiting family, if the clouds disperse and I can drag my niece and nephew I might make it a family event. It'd be fun to see you in your element
02/17/2008
Scott L. says:
bah!! Mi madre has already invited dinner guests that night for 6pm. fooey. Now I'm going to have to try to excuse myself (and my nephew) from dinner and get roof access to the apartment building.
No cookies for you Christopher, though we baked about 4 dozen for a BBQ roday.
FYI, Cris is leading a bunch of people going to Tilden up by the bay.
02/17/2008
Beth "bonus taco" T. says:
Yeah Christopher I saw that too - happy for me for snow, bad for me for lunar eclipsing....
02/17/2008
Simon "SiMonster" C. says:
i'll be sitting on my roof to hopefully see the eclipse. i'll tip a glass in y'all's direction!
02/17/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
Well, the online weather forecast looks like it's saying "partly cloudy" which probably means it will be relatively okay at the observatory early in the evening...clouds usually thicken later in the evening. Let's just hope that rain doesn't come early...
*crosses fingers*

soy "tokki" y. says:
Hi Chris S.! i hope i can make it out!

02/19/2008
Lourdes "Bella" V. says:
Okay, Folks I am convinced that all of you are super cool! If I get to meet at least one of you there, I know we are going to have loads of fun. Thanks, see you there. I shall bring my Camera. Pancakes sound good afterwards. Do we need a reservation for the observatory, does anybody know?
02/19/2008
Wes "I Put On For My City" S. says:
Hmmm, I finally saw "Transformers" on Friday (yes, I'm behind, so sue me), and it would be nice to hold hands with a hottie like he did when the other Autobots landed on Earth. What? lol. I'm excited! I haven't been up to the observatory since they remodeled.
02/19/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
An update on the status of the weather tomorrow:
http://www.weather.com...As we approach the day of the eclipse, it looks like there will be rain in the a.m., but by 6 p.m. it lists as mostly clear.
So maybe the ground will be a little moist, and you may want to make sure you have a jacket, but we should have good skies tomorrow evening :-)

dawson "jam sandwich of love" s. says:
"Where's the meeting point?"
Just look for the Black man with the telescope. I would put money on the fact that there will only be one.
02/19/2008
Wes "I Put On For My City" S. says:
Chris, considering this will be late at night, there will be "black figures" everywhere. Hmm, I wonder if some of the other Transformers land tonight. OK, I'm talking crazy. Time for more coffee.

"Chris, considering this will be late at night, there will be "black figures" everywhere."
Actuall, at 7:00 p.m. (during mid-eclipse) it will be twilight; I'm hoping most people will be there around 6:30, when it will still be daylight. After that, I think you can always spot a group of rowdy Yelpers...
The lawn isn't particularly huge...I've been able to track down people amongst the crowd in the past with relative ease.
02/20/2008
frank L. says:
http://www.skyviewcafe...In case anybody has trouble finding the moon tomorrow, this is a nifty little thing you can use to track the motion of the moon as it crosses the sky tomorrow night. Chances are if you're looking up, you'll be able to find the moon anyhow, but it's still a nice tool for anyone taking an astronomy class.
I take it from this that the moon'll be near the eastern horizon around the time of the eclipse.
02/20/2008
Beth "bonus taco" T. says:
yeah the weather looks crazy the next few days - rain, no, rain, no....rain....no....
(Crosses fingers it clears out for this afternoon/evening)
02/20/2008
dawson "the lone bacon of reason" s. says:
The clouds are already breaking here in SaMo.. you can even see some blue sky. Even if it's partly cloudy tonight, we should have a good view of the moon. Looks like we'll be in good shape :)
See everyone there!
02/20/2008
Arthur "Bear" B. says:
I just ofund out an old friend of mine who I hadnt seen in 6 years is in LA for the week... soooo if I can convince her that this is what we need to be doing tonight, I will be attending my first event tonight :)
02/20/2008
AJ "sassy" K. says:
omigosh, this thing is blowing up!
02/20/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
Yeah, I think I'm going to head over after right after my astronomy class, and secure some parking and a place for my equipment.
02/20/2008
CJ "Clubbing Yelpette..." J. says:
I think Imma try to go! :) Chris. I thought I saw on MSN that it's at 6:01pm, not 7:01pm. I might just be retarded. It's at 7:01pm right? I can't get all the way there by 6pm after work. :(
02/20/2008
Katey and Sean S. says:
Cool event! Sean gets off work at 6, and we're coming from Highland Park... but we MIGHT make it! He's been talking about GP forever. I've never been.

Elise "Twinkle Twinkle" M. says:
We should bring tarps/ plastic sheeting put under blankets to sit on! Soggy bottoms are not sexy.
02/20/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
They changed the forecast on the weather sites from mostly clear to partly cloudy :-/
Well, I lugged all of my equipment to school today, so it's getting set up on the lawn of GRO this afternoon...whether or not the clouds cooperate.
02/20/2008
Aunny "Boom Boom" D. says:
I don't think I'm gonna be able to make the eclipse. But I will meet you guys at BGL afterwards! Christopher, call or text me when you guys are on your way.
02/20/2008
Darrell L. says:
I was just there at 3:30pm and there's plenty of parking still. Where are you going to meet everyone? There's about 50 LA Foodies coming and about 20 from my Photo Meetup group. I figure around 8 pm or so, the LA foodies will head over to Jitlada for some killer hot Thai food to thaw us all out. LA Foodies meet at the statue at 6pm and then we'll probably head over to the rear observation deck so we might have a little privacy to share our nosh and adult beverages. Yes, the lawn is very damp so if you plan to sit on the lawn you might want to put down a tarp first. There will be at least 10 telescopes set up on the lawn according to the main telescope guy I spoke with today.
02/20/2008
Christopher "Loves wooden boxes" S. says:
Cool, I'm going to leave now.
See you at BGL Aunny...wherever you are, if you get a chance to, stick your head outside at around 7:00 p.m.
02/20/2008
Cris "Sputchman" L. says:
Hope you guys get better weather down there! In Berkeley it's a little cloudy right now, although I can see plenty of blue sky as well.
Enjoy the event!!!

Victoria "the Vixen" C. says:
Dang... I can't make it. I just got home and I am STILL finishing my report cards that are due tomorrow. Have fun!
02/20/2008
Amy K. says:
It's too cloudy here in OC. I was outside from 6:00 to 7:30 and couldn't see anything. =(
