(The date will probably change when we've heard actual news of when it's going to be, thanks mostly to their trying to comply with the DOH. Supremely tentative.)
Ah, the marks of spring that bleed into summer: the smell of a charcoal grill, the sound of kids laughing, the feeling of grass under your toes, the glorious sight of smiles and convivium, and the taste of delicious, delicious, delicious food.
So when the time comes, I would like to extend my invitation to all y'all to have a magnificent Saturday or Sunday brunch at Red Hook Ball Fields. For those of you who have never been, it's time to get initiated; for those of you who have, it's game on.
Note that this is cash only, but you shouldn't need to bring any more than a round-trip Metrocard, a Jackson, and your appetite.
It is on like Donkey Kong.
------- UPDATE 5/27!!!!!!
I've spoken with the Red Hook Ball Fields food vendors (they have a satellite location at the Brooklyn Flea which I've been secretly enjoying, so go already) and they said they're back full force beginning JUNE 7.
Mark your calendars, tell your friends, and bring an appetite.
yea, they got their permits from parks and recreation and now the only hurdle is converting the carts etc. for DOH. they said they might not be there for the first soccer game but it depends on how they're coming along with the changes.
damn straight i'm in! i've gotten so pumped up for the re-opening since i've moved to Bushwick and discovered mini-Red Hook Ball Fields literally just steps from my door step ;)
I read that as, "We'll have to come draaag youuuu out to play." Believe me, it's doable ;)
ps: if we start our own yelp whiffle ball game, will the vendors & spectators stay to watch?, and if not, then yelp whiffle ball / yelp bbq event would be fun.
Tony, that's an excellent idea. I have a big red whiffle ball bat in the trunk of my car i'll be sure to bring. I will however make no guarantees I'll be able to round the bases after gorging on pupusas!
Rob, I went to a sporting goods store today, and I saw the display for whiffle ball & bat sets. I reminisced my childhood days, and thought, "I sucked at whiffle ball, but I would love to play this game again, it's all about just havin' fun." That, or stick ball; imagine the trouble we could get in with playing stickball in the city these days, lol.
you are forgetting the absolute best way to get to red hook--the water taxi! from manhattan, you can pick it up at south street seaport or several other places-- http://www.nywatertaxi...
and your ticket is good all day, so you can jump around, go to the water taxi beach in LIC, hit the fulton ferry landing for ice cream at the bk ice cream factory, whatever you want! totally worth it, and when was the last time you were on a boat?
Since my mommy will be coming to visit that weekend so I can regale her with flowers and whatnot for her appreciation day, I must say "Sounds cool" and join you every other weekend this summer. Except the really really hot ones.
Tingle, we can drag each other out to the next one. Arms across the boros!!!!!
THe water taxi thing sounds wonderful! Thanks, Becca!
don't forget guys, the date's not set in stone -- whenever day the food stands decide to come back, that's the one we'll hit up. to be honest we don't even know when they'll be back; i just wanted to put this up as the 'first day' gang.
This event is way preemptive. major red hook blue balling here.
It's really a shame the restrictions being put on the food vendors. If I was a gozillionaire, the first thing I would do would get them the equipment to satisfy the state requirements.
I'm confused. The consensus is clearly that the vendors aren't there, but there's a review from late April where Stephanie R says she's been going the last 5 weeks. Can anyone explain?
a few yelpers were kind enough to keep us updated regarding the vendors situation. they got approved and extended to be there again this year (and for X amount of time after that).
Implying that: A: They will be there (which I assume means they got DOH approval, but can't confirm) B: It starts first weekend of June (which means what???...5/31-6/1 or 6/7-8) C: There's free ferry service out of Manhattan (which I didn't know about)
Well, like the article says, the free ferry service is not for the food vendors. You'd actually be on the ferry for the Red Hook Ikea. The ball fields are a short walk away...
From what I gathered from this thread http://www.yelp.com/to..., they're actually going to be opeing some time in June...
I read the article and got that. Check. I read the thread and aside from Vicki's comment that they "start in June", the thread/artcile really has nothing to do with Red Hook....besides the title.
It's still not clear when this starts and IF the vendors will be there. I would have thought that there would be some publicity as to whether the vendors actually got DOH approval or not. I know they got a contract by the city to show up, but does that also means they got DOH approval to sell food?
I'm pretty sure the vendors got approval... a quick google search brought up several articles claiming that they did. Now the question is: when does it start? Would be pretty sweet if it were this weekend, but it seems indeed like it might be sometime in June.
From everything I've read, all the approvals are in place: it's just a matter of each vendor shelling out the money for an expensive cart or trailer or truck or whatever the approved mobile kitchen is. Unless the organizer is going to pull some masterful move, it seems unlikely they'd all get the funds for this at the same time, so wouldn't we expect to see the vendors start to trickle in individually as they manage to beg, borrow, or steal carts? Or is the whole thing more organized than I thought?
I still really want to know what the deal is with Stephanie R's review that says she's been going "almost once a week for the past 5 weeks" as of April 20.
how could they steal a cart? I guess they could have trucks, but it's more the refrigeration equipment that is necessary. it costs about 30k to get up to code. we need fundraising I think
I had a pic of of Jeremy because I opened up my NY Times the other day and his face was staring back at me.
Anyhoo, it's back to me and my own face for now...
Anyways, still no word on when this starts, but I'm excited for it. I'm still hoping that it's not next weekend though... I know, I'm selfish, but I want to go too! hahahha
For anyone who didn't click through to Shaun's nymag link (or hear about it some other way), at least one of the vendors is doing pupusas, huaraches, tacos, tamales, and more at Brooklyn Flea (http://www.brownstoner...) in Ft Greene. I've got three pupusas in my belly to prove it.
Okay... guess who is the biggest moron on this thread? if you guessed the guy who got ROTD for reviewing these very Red Hook Ball fields, then you are correct!
I showed up yesterday, hoping to see food and people... all I got was the soccer games. Why? Cuz I forgot to read WHICH weekend this started. Erf and Derf!
As Miguel d posted, they were at the Brooklyn Flea this weekend. A smaller satellite version with lemonade, cut fruit: mango and watermelon in one line and tacos and pupusas in two other lines. Of course it wasn't the full-blown experience but a lot easier to get to for sure. This weekend they are supposedly going to be at the ballpark.
Hello everyone hate to disappoint you but the vendors will not be there probably until the 3 week of june or last week of june. Ever one is eager to go back but their mobil food trucks are not completed yet. Out of the 12 vendors that might be returning this summer only one is ready the rest are not. for future question contact the vendors at their special email to answer must of your questions redhookfoodvendors@yah...
Thanks for the info Marcos, I emailed then and this is the response I got back Hi Danielle, No, we are not going to be ready until the third or last week of June. But most of the vendors will be participating in a BLOCK PARTY at Coffey Park Red Hook on June 14. This event is hosted by www.dancinginthestreet... and will have live music, dance, and much more. Thanks for contacting us. RHFVendors.
So WTF is happening? I heard YES from Miguel on Wednesday. Now I hear no. Hrmph. Anyway, all I know is, it will be 90 something degrees and HOOO-MID on saturday, and I gotta see a man about a couch. So, have fun.
Nina...you gots the right idea! is too hot out there! just came back from a walk to el banko for my ballfields jackson and realized...the weather forgot to transition...is like a heat shockwave for us east-coast peeps so all ya'll braving it today at the ballfields...good luck!
I SEEEYYYYZZZ IF U HAVEN'T GONE OUT YET, STAY IN THIS EARLY AFTERNOON UNTIL THE SUN CHILLS OUT A BIT!
sadly, no. the vendors have a myspace page (which i'm pretty sure is legit) that i've found on another site. if you want to check it out, the site is at: http://www.myspace.com...
i hope they open soon, i'd like them to be able to make back the money that they had to invest in the food trucks.
