What/Why:
This way-cool event is a benefit for the Capital Area Food Bank, which supplies food to needy people and needier food banks throughout our fair city.   The CAFB has been overwhelmed with requests for assistance in the last 6 months as the economy has tanked and the food banks it supplies have been busier than any time in recent history.

The specific benefactor of EBP is the "Kids Cafe" of the food bank.  "Many children in low-income neighborhoods do not receive well-balanced evening meals because their caregivers work late hours or cannot afford nutritious food. Children must receive appropriate nutrition in order to develop properly and perform well in school. Kids Cafe serves as a direct partnership between the Food Bank and existing after-school programs."

It's a great cause, and a way to get some good soup, fresh bread, hear cool local music, bask in good fellowship and take home a special hand-crafted bowl as a keepsake.

Here's how it works according the their site:

1. Choose your favorite bowl from the thousands of handmade bowls donated by area potters and students.

2. Pay for your bowl(s).  It's $15 per bowl. Make checks payable to the Capital Area Food Bank.  We prefer cash or check if possible, though credit cards will be accepted (Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover).

3. Get your new bowl washed before you get soup.

4. Get your bowl filled with soup and bread from some of Austin's finest restaurants.

5. Enjoy your soup while listening to local, live music.

6. Check out the Austin Empty Bowl t-shirts. They're just $10 each and help cover the cost of the event. Make checks payable to the Capital Area Food Bank.

7. Check out the Quilt by Nancy Elder! Tickets to win this hand-crafted quilt are $1, or 6 for $5. The drawing is at 3 p.m.

8. Bid on a celebrity bowl in the silent auction area.

9. Have your bowl cleaned and wrapped up to take home with you.
========

And I would add:

10: Go home filled with soup warmth and the special toasty feeling that comes from knowing you have done a little bit to help a little kid who needs a nutritious meal to get one and grow up to be big and strong and happy.

I've got a bunch of colleagues from the lab and a group from the pub meeting me there, along with a bunch of Yelp buddies.  I'm excited and looking forward to getting a bowl or two.  I also want to bid on bowls by Eddie Izzard (because he's crazy), Billy Gibbons (beard envy) , Susan Gibson (because she sings at a lot of Blue Dog Rescue events) and Zooey Deschanel (for one of my young female friends and because I find her eyes interesting).
