It still amazed me how few of Baltimore's residents have actually been to the top of the Washington Monument.  It's free (well, $1 suggested donation, but I've never seen anyone pay) and the views are superb.  It seems like the gates at the top are to keep you from going out on the ledge, although one typically is open, offering you access to walk around, just below the statue, with an amazing…
