Good fast-food Mexican. Try:
1) $.95 basket of chips + unlimited free salsa from the salsa bar.
2) Tacone. The Tacone will never displace its siblings the taco and burrito, bit it's a tasty, crunchy, novelty. The Mexican Chicken is good, and the pork is better. Sure, it gets messy near the end, but that's what makes it good. -

This is a hidden gem in Royal Oak, now that there buildings all around Zumba. I've been going to Zumba for over 7 years. Royal Oak has so many good restaurants, many more are upscale, but Zumba has always been true to what they do, tradinational Mexican food. They do it very well.
So besides their salsa bar, with 6-8 different salsa, from hot to mild, there should be a spice level for everyone.
You order the type of dish you want, I like the burrito with either stewed pork or chicken, pinto beans, and most of the toppings. You won't go home hungry. -

Zumba is my "go to" place to satisfy my cravings for *quick* tacos y burritos in Royal Oak. Their food is quick & fresh & pretty darn delicious. My one bone to pick is that the meat can sometimes be a bit dry. I usually go for tacos but their burritos and bowl-ritos are great choices too. As for their tacos, I used to order the soft corn tortilla but found that it doesn't hold up to the salsa with out falling apart. So I now opt for the flour tortilla instead. I usually go for the grilled chicken with cilantro, onion & cheese. The shredded chicken on the taco ends up making the tacos too soggy.
What really sets Zumba apart from other fast food taco joints is their salsa bar. Try them all from the pico de gallo to the salsa verde to the hot n spicy chipotle...they all are delicious and fresh. Their chips are really great too, thin, fresh & lightly salted. It's not going to set any new standards but it's a great choice for a quick stop in taco or burrito lunch.
I'm glad there's a place I can go to for a quick lunch during work when my time is limited. They are moving to the Emagine Theater in a few months...this worries me...I can't see myself going inside a theater to get my taco fix. This may not be a good business move, Zumba! -

I like the food but it lacks Bold flavor in the protein selections. The price is great and the service is always good.

Zumba is a pretty decent place if you're in a hurry and jonesin for some Mexican food. That's about where it ends for me though. When I went the first time I tried the stewed chicken and loved it, but the next time I went and got the same thing it had a HUGE chunk of fat in it...soooo nasty.
Went again last night and got a Bowl-rito with just refried beans and rice. Can't go wrong there, but it was pretty boring. The chips could have saved it if they had been freshly made but unfortunately I could see the 15 clear buckets of them sitting on the shelves in back...no freshly made chips for me :( The BF liked his burrito, but that's not saying much because he likes just about anything food-wise. He also wasn't impressed with the salsa bar as he felt they were either tasteless or totally over-the-top spicy. He was still hungry after his meal, too. Their burritos definitely aren't as large as those at Qdoba or Chipotle. For me, I'd much rather eat at Qdoba and get that delicious cheese dip that they have. Not sure if I'll be back to Zumba or not... -

IDK, not so great anymore. I haven't had a fish tacone in ages, so I was anxious to sink my teeth into one. Meh. The fish was stale and chewy. Yuck. Everything else on it was fine but come on, it's a FISH taco!
The salsa bar was filthy.
If I ever return, it will be for the shredded pork or chicken.

Since I've returned to the D, I must admit I've had blinders on when it comes to my Zumba experience. I work in Dearborn, and getting over to Royal Oak takes some effort. When I put it forth, I want the old standby--Mexican Chicken burrito, rice, black beans, jalapenos, olives, cheese, sour cream, habanero salsa if it's there, pico de gallo if it's not. Apparently, I'm not the only one, as the five people immediately in front of me all ordered Mexican Chicken yesterday. Being the contrarian that I am, I made the snap decision to change things up, and looking down at me from the board were the words "red chile pork." What do you know, they were right when they said change is good. It had a good spicy kick to it while retaining its tenderness.
When it comes to suburban Detroit burrito joints, Zumba is The Clash--the only band that matters. Mostly because it's one of the few restaurants in the burbs that isn't afraid of being flavorful.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Tacos were really skimpy, barely any meat & they didn't use two tortillas which caused issues when trying to handle their stewed chicken. Salsa bar was a nice touch. My partner in dine enjoyed the burrito bowl but overall don't think it was a good value...

If you want to order their trademark tacōn, make sure to say "tacōnnnnnnnn," so that the people behind the counter don't confuse it for a taco. :P
I got the stewed red chili pork tacōnnnnn, and the deep-fried shell was fantastic. XD The pork itself wasn't that flavorful but tasted fine with the salsas (and guacamole for $1.10 on the side).
The salsa bar was a nice touch. The seating inside is weird, and eating outside is also awkward because there will probably be a row of people eating, watching you eat.
Friendly staff, which is always a plus. :) -

As much as I love their bowl-rritos....
I HATE their seatings. so uncomfortable and awkward. I felt like I did something wrong and I was punished to sit on that cold stoolish seat and eat my food.
And there were like 5 kids running around yelling at each other. I was so annoyed.
I definitely suggest take your order to go. and by the way, their quesadilla is very small.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Love! Zumba has never disappointed me!! The food is always a great quality and the specials that they run are equally impressive. The Mexican chicken is by far my favorite!!! The toppings are always fresh - their food never disappoints. They've even been able to convince me to try their fried fish - which is normally NOT an interest of mine - and I was really impressed with the quality and flavor!
Not only that, the staff is always helpful and pleasant!
Totally my go-to place if I need a quick meal in Royal Oak. -

When we first moved to town it became my sons favorite place, and we easily gave a 5 star. The prices were reasonable and the tastes authentic. We'll still go, but not as often as we used to. Their prices JUMPED making our "cheap" stop, a little too expensive for the amount of food you get. Don't get me wrong it is good food...but I think they raised the prices too high to finance their new restaurant in birmingham.

Yum! The stewed chicken is my favorite, so much so that I never can seem to order anything else. The staff is always so friendly and ingredients are always very fresh!
It's really the only mexican in Royal Oak that I like. So thank goodness for Zumba, because otherwise I'd have to leave town to get a fix. -
Review from Dil F.
Fresh, super fast, good quality, friendly service. Gotta love it.
Really liked eating here on the fly for the first time this past week. Needed something quick before a movie, was considering running down to Qdoba, but then spotted this place across the street (not sure how i never noticed it before). On entering, I was greeted with a "welcome welcome. what can i get for you?"... a quick peek at the menu overhead, super well organized, enticed me to try their fish tacos and stewed chicken tacos. They were prepared in front of me in seconds flat, I got to request whatever toppings i wanted, and I'm paying as soon as they're handed to me. The whole thing took 3 or 4 minutes.
And the food was delicious! Only took another 4 or 5 minutes to wolf down. Loved them. Highly recommend. If you compare them to tacos down in SW Detroit, you'll be disappointed MAYBE - but it's the wrong comparison. This place should be compared to restaurants like Qdoba (nasty/tasty) and Chipotle Grill (healthy/tasty) - since Zumba is replicating the same model of SUPER fast service and really fresh ingredients. True, the tacos cost twice as much as the tacos downtown (i bought 4 tacos for over $10 here, while those same tacos cost less than 5 bucks downtown). But everything costs twice as much up here.
If I'm in Royal Oak, I'll never go back to Qdoba or Chipotle knowing that this place is here - it's noticeably better food, and way better service. [actually, I've always had great service at Qdoba and Chipotle too... so Zumba wins just cuz the food tasted better] -

Review from Debbie H.
I debated between 3 and 4 stars, but I went with 4 ... and I'll tell you why. We stop here only for a quick bite before a movie at the Main and not to sit down, talk for a while and relax ... so for that purpose, it's been great every time we've gone. The food is fresh and while the portions aren't enormous, we've both always left satisfied. I still have not tried the bowl-rito, so that's on the agenda but the grilled chicken tacos that we normally order are excellent.
The only drawbacks I would mention don't really affect us ... and that's the "tight-squeeze" and not-so-comfortable seating. We just aren't there long enough to be bothered by it. I will say this though; on a few occasions when we have been headed over to this place and notice that it's busy, we simply avoid it. It's just too small to fight crowds in. -
Review from Marissa H.
Royal Oak, MI
I may be particularly harsh because I was really in the mood for Mexican and then disappointed by Zumba, but "meh, i've experienced better," sums up EXACTLY how I feel about it.
I walked in feeling optimistic about the five, plus salsas at the salsa bar. I was even happier when I saw that the fish tacos were served on corn tortillas. From there, all went downhill.
1. The fish tacos only consisted of fish, a corn tortilla, and a mayonnaise-y sauce. No cabbage, no lime. Fairly bland.
2. Plus 1's burrito didn't come wrapped, and he was pissed. In fact, he was already irritated by the time he reached the end of the counter because....
3. The woman in front of us was getting nickel and dimed for extra vegetables and toppings. The cashier also ran out of nickels and wasn't going to accept the $1.10 that the customer had given because she wouldn't be able to make proper change...until the girl making my tacos yelled over her shoulder to go ahead and just give it to her.
4. The salsa bar was a disappointed mix of watery, salty tomato stuff that people try and call salsa. The pico possibly didn't have any cilantro in it. The salsa verde didn't taste like salsa verde. At all.
I can't believe that people get so excited about this place. I guess I'll try the stewed chicken tacos next time. Not to be a big snob about Mexican here, but SERIOUSLY?? Does the Midwest have no good places? -

Hidden gem in Royal Oak.
The chips and salsa are always fresh and satisfying. The guacamole is pretty damn good too.
I usually opt for the Bowl-ritto to save me the embarrassment of dropping some of the meaty goodness on me, especially if I come here for lunch with work colleagues. The skirt steak is my favorite, but the fish one holds its own too.
I usually just get carry out because it just gets too crowded for lunch. Don't come here expecting a nice sit down with a few friends, it's not that type of atmosphere. Come here if you want a delicious burrito and are sick of over-priced joints like Monterrey or the cheap route of Qdoba or Chipolte. -
Review from Laura H.
Here's the deal with this place: if you want phenomenal, taste-of-the-border-grande Mexican, you go to Mexicantown. (Or Mexico.) Like basically any other Mexican joint in the Metro area, I wouldn't classify this as "real Mexican food."
However, if what you're in the market for is something cheap, quick, healthy, and tasty, then Zumba's is virtually the only establishment in town that fills all of those requirements with style.
In my opinion, the best thing about Zumba's is how quick and healthy it is. I habitually go for the burritos, but the quesadillas are also pretty awesome. Tell the person working there your filling of choice - me, I tend to go for the veggie, but all of the options are pretty damn good - and then they load you up with beans (pinto, black, or both), rice, and your choice of lettuce, cilantro, cheese, onions, and jalepenos. I usually go wild and get everything. You only live once, right?
If you want sour cream and guacamole, they're extra. Sour cream is generic, but you should definitely pony up for the guac. It's pretty stellar. I also rather like the free salsa bar here - make sure you throw some over your entree before you leave if you choose to take out.
Basically, for what this place offers, you're not going to get a healthier meal faster at a better value anywhere else. Once I'm done with my burrito order the total comes to around 7 bucks, which is only slightly more expensive than a meal from a fast food joint and Zumba is much, much, MUCH healthier. Lean meats, veggies, beans, and cheese? Yes, please.
The staff is also refreshingly pleasant. They always greet me and usually I strike up a brief conversation with the person who's manning my burrito. It's nothing overbearing, but rather just a pleasant way to not have that awkward silence that happens so often at Subway when the "sandwich artist" is doing his thing.
If there are any downsides to the place, I would have to say it's the seating. I've never ate in at Zumba - the high metal counter with matching metal chairs just doesn't look particularly inviting. I would agree that it's definitely not a family restaurant or a place you'd bring friends to chat over the meal. Zumba's is pretty much the epitome of grab-n'-go, and if you stay to eat you'll stay just long enough to scrape up the last forkful of guac and then bolt.
However, given that the other options around for cheap, fast eats tend to be the fried variety, Zumba wins out every time when I want that quick bite but don't want to feel like I've shotgunned a bottle of canola oil. If you're in the area and feeling a mite peckish, I can guarantee that Zumba will satisfy your Jones and get you back out on the road. -

Stopped by here cuz I was in the area and I'm determined to try all the places janelle w. has reviewed. so i stopped in and gave it a shot. after living in california for a year and a half nothing will ever compare to the tacos they have there. but this came pretty close. the corn tortillas were pretty spot on. the fish tacos were not bad although i wish they used cabbage/coleslaw instead of lettuce. bummer. there is a mexican chicken and a grilled chicken. i dont know if i would get the mexican chicken again.. the grilled chicken looked better. ill have to try that next time i go.. also price is very cheap and the salsa bar looks a little amateur but when you gotta have salsa.. it will do.
oh ya. i went back for another fish taco after eating my first.. and i was about to use my credit card.. i think it was $2-something. i know they charge outrageous fees to business owners for using credit so i stopped and told him i had cash.. i was short. he accepted whatever cash i had and chuckled about how it would probably cost him more to run the card. very friendly staff. -
Review from Max K.
Astoria, Queens, NY
Zumba is simple and straight to the point Mexican food. I got a Chicken Bowl-Rito with tortilla chips instead of a tortilla. The portions weren't huge, but enough to satisfy a rumbling stomach. They do give you a ton of chips though and their salsa selection is extensive. I stuck with a mild salsa which was quite hearty with chunks of tomatoes and other stuff you'd typically find in salsa.
I paid almost $8 with extra veggies which is relative to the chains, i.e. Chipotle, Pancheros, Qdoba. I like Zumba because for one, it occupies a great spot near downtown Royal Oak on Main. And two, the atmosphere is intense and mentally exhausting. If you don't like fighting to fill up your plate with salsa, for a seat, a cup of water, or spot in line, steer clear during the lunch rush. Then again, if you're looking to add a bit of excitement to your life because you're day job blows, you're bored, or you just want some damn good Mexican, you go to Zumba.
Everything Zumba serves tastes and looks fresh. My sister who swears to hate all forms Mexican cuisine minus Taco Bell nachos said her cheese quesadilla was amazing and of course my Bowl-Rito was damn good. Most important however, unlike most other Mexican joints, I didn't have a battle raging in my stomach a few hours after eating. Unfortunately, I can't think of a more fitting way to end this review than writing lovezz it. Please don't judge me.Listed in: Chowing in the 'Burbs

Zumba!!
No, not the fitness program... I'm talking about the Mexican Grille with the BEST fish tacos I've ever had. I haven't been here since 2007 when I moved to California, so I'm hoping their fish tacos are still as good as they were three years ago. I think what gives their fish tacos an edge is the creamy tomatillo salsa. It makes an already good fish taco, with it's lightly beer-battered cod fillet, that much better. I haven't been able to find a fish taco in California that can beat theirs. So Zumba please please please open a location in California somewhere... cuz God knows I won't be going back to Michigan. :) -

ok guys i know im not going dissuade you from going and i mean i don't care anyway but i feel like i should write this here.
i went to zumbas - ordered a crayfish taco special - and i watch them spoon like a very small spoonful of that stuff into my taco. like - so much tortilla - not enough crayfish stuff. the cashier noticed and tried to offer me a free drink because i had this sort of subtle wtf look on my face.
the crayfish employee was so full of guilt she wouldn't even look at me.
other things are good. pretty good food. not my fav.
i like qdoba better for some reason. don't think i don't know my "mexican" food either.

My favorite Mexican getaway. This restaurant and service is similar to Qdoba's and Chipotle but the ingredients are way fresh and tastier. Yet they are cleaner and friendlier. This is more of a family-friends restaurant.
All the meals are excellent. I love the burrito, quesadilla, tacos - the pinto beans are cooked perfectly. The steaks are excellent. The chicken are great. Their homemade guacamole and salsas are beyond stellar. They have this salsa bar that you get to choose your own and it's free! The chips are very crisp and enjoyable.
And you can't turn down their free parking lot too - just make sure it's for dining only ;) -
Review from Janelle W.
Detroit, MI
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the Zumba burrito. My favorite thing about it is the unique serving style--the burritos aren't rolled, but rather left as an open tortilla. Since I typically cut a big burrito open and eat it with a fork, Zumba saves me some work, and I can just dig in. The chicken and rice are both prepared very well. They also have very good guacamole, and it doesn't cost extra (like at Chipotle).
But now for the bad... The salsas are terrible. So terrible, in fact, that they should be ashamed to serve them. The mild salsa tastes like spaghetti sauce, the tomatillo is too acidic, and the chipotle-tomatillo is garbage. Seating is also limited and kind of awkward, especially when the restaurant is busy. Not the best seating layout ever designed.
Nonetheless, I prefer Zumba to most fresh-Mex big-burrito joints in metro Detroit. I, too, am still searching for that perfect burrito. While Zumba isn't perfect, it's leading my search. -
Review from Toni C.
The food here is alright. It's not memorable to me though. I still think of Qdoba before this place for some reason.
One star off for the salsa. Like others mentioned the salsa is not very good. It's weird because they have so many but none of them stand out or taste very good to me at all.
Another star off for the nickel and dime-ing. It costs extra for sour cream and guacamole. I can understand if I want a side of it but for just a little dollop on a taco that's ridiculous.
They should also give some complimentary chips. If you have a free salsa bar why no free chips? I'm not asking for a ton of chips here but just a few to go with my meal like they do a Baja Fresh. Nope the chips are extra too. :(
So overall this place is good when you want a local, fast, fresh Mexican option.Listed in: Who Wants Mexican Food?

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised with my first visit to Zumba's. A clean, bright spot on Main street that serves an awesome rendition of Fresh Mexican dishes.
Most of these dishes are hand held. They took care to carry totally vegetarian beans and prepared rice (without meat shortening or chicken stock) What does this mean for me? More carefree days to order and walk away feeling like I had a healthy balanced meal.
Love the fresh cilantro.
Love the zing of the purple onions and jalapenos.
Thick and cold sour cream against my nicely seasoned ground beef.
Ahhh!
I am a big fan of the Tacone served here. A tubular fried tortilla that can be filled with rice, beans (black or pinto) ground beef or chicken, and all the toppings you can handle. I just sit back and order mine with everything. Its like a taco salad but more .....conveniently shaped. Once they top it with monterey cheese and then I top it with the green tomatillo salsa and a bit of pico de gallo Ummm Mmm!
There is a salsa bar. At least 6 types of salsa of different heat factors to choose from. I found them extremely fresh and flavorful.
I adore the ground beef and chicken served here. Its moist, well seasoned while not being salty. The ground beef is firm and defined, just adding to the flavorful punch. -

I love Mexican cuisine, but I've never been much of a fan of fast food Mexican. Zumba is now my exception. I have only been to Zumba a couple times, but each time I go I am reminded how yummy it is!
I am a humongous fan of beans and rice, so I love how they offer vegetarians a choice of getting each entree with grilled veggies or beans and rice. It's not often I can find vegetarian beans and rice in a restaurant! I typically order the beans and rice bowl-rito with pinto beans, cheese, lettuce, olives and guac. For some reason their bowl is so much more delicious then the similar one at Qdoba down the street. The ingredients taste fresh and they give a really decent portion that definitely fills me up. Their outside seating is really cute and a nice option, but seating is fairly limited. -

The food is sometimes a bit inconsistent, but when it's on, oh man, it's on. Even when it's off, it's still better than Qdoba or Chipotle.
Try the tacon, which is delicious and definitely unlike something you'd find at a Mexican "fast food" place. And the baja fish is also quite tasty.
As far as it goes compared to the "real Tex-Mex" you'd find in Texas, sure, it isn't as flavorful or fresh (although it isn't really lacking in either). But as far as what you can find north of the border, Zumba is among the best you can get, certainly outside of Mexicantown. -

I've been a fan of Zumba since they've opened and have always enjoyed the fresh food and fast preparation from the friendly staff. I was pleased to find them branching out with their salsas and guac at local markets as well. I have turned so many of my friends on to this awesome hole in the wall.
There is absolutely ZERO comparison to any of the fast-food-crap "Mexican" restaurants out there. Zumba is an original and I'm thankful it is located close to home. -

Kinda like the local mexican version of Subway.
You walk in decide which of the dishes you want and then move down the production line having them add what ever you want. The meats are spiced nicely and they do not skimp on the quantity.
The guacamole is excellent, fresh made chips, quick service once you get in the door. I marked down one star because parking can be challenge sometimes, also no beer or wine. It really is a carry out place with a few seats along the windows and in warmer weather , outside tables.
They have a salsa bar that you fill little cups with the salsa of your choice.
All in all a good choice for good mexican on the go -

I've been going to Zumba for well over 6 years. It's much better than your average chain, in my opinion. I've never had more than a mediocre experience at your average "Taco Bell/Qdoba" type places.
At Zumba, they have a nice menu, a diverse selection of authentically Mexican salsas (I know, salsa can't have an ethnicity or a nationality because it is food and not a person. The reason I say authentic is because I just returned from two weeks of living with a Mexican family and their salsas looked and tasted very similar to that which you see at Zumba, especially the green tomatillo salsa. The reason the salsas in Mexico are "watery" is because the tomatoes and peppers are grilled on a comal (or, cast iron griddle) until they are somewhat charred, then blended in a blender. Of course, the juice from the tomatoes makes everything watery.
When I started going to Zumba, it was very visible from the corner of 11 & Main. Now, sadly it lies in the shadows of a behemoth condominium complex.
Zumba is locally owned and operated, the food is great, and it is quickly & freshly prepared. -

If you are looking for a quick, affordable tasty meal, Zumba is the way to go. I have never had anything that i didn't like form this place, and it always tastes fresh, not to mention the Salsa bar has a ton of incredible choices. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is for the cramped seating, and sometimes its a bit over crowded ( which tells you how great the food is!) So I end up taking it to go. I wouldn't recommend the chicken, but the fish tacos are great, and I love that you can get a bowl-ritto for dipping. Also the chips are light and fresh tasting...
But my favorite is the cinnamon crisp cookies! Made by holiday market, they are so tasty!
Also I'm willing to pay a little more because they keep everything local!
