WOW! A diamond in the rough. You walk into a simple grocery store & smell all the spices...mmmm they must be in the food too! The woman looked a bit surprised to see me (it was a little late) but as soon as I ordered it take-out she was very happy to serve!
Then her super cute little kids hung out with me while I waited - we played hide & seek with the shell he found on the schoolground *cute*. The "mom" then graciously gave me her business card & menu to take with me. Then the food was taken home.
It was SOOO tasty & flavorfull! had the veggie combo & lamb. YUM!
It was so much food that my husband and I ate it 2 days in a row! and for only $22! Injera was super yum - 3 huge pieces!
I wished this was a true restaurant, but I was happy eating it at home anyways.

I'm sitting here with a bitch pile of yummy Ethiopian food.
2 pounds 6 ounces to be exact.
I've been kicking myself every time I walk by Zuma for not supporting them.
I got the veggie platter. I agree with Dean, you could split this food with 2 or 3 others. I got 3 pieces of Injera with my takeout. The street value of Injera alone makes it a done deal.
I am definitely going back and we are going to learn to cook Ethiopian, so I can shop her when Greenwood market goes down for the count.
Rating note: I'm dropping 5 stars on these guys. If they were a full on restaurant, maybe 3 or 4 stars. As a small local grocer and provider of Ethiopian culture, they get the 5 star bump

Hell yeah. This place is really unassuming, and I went there based on location from me in Ballard, rather than make the trip to the CD.
Don't get thrown off (like me) when you walk in and see that everything being sold at this "grocery" store is hand packaged in ziploc-baggies. It is a store! It's also a place you can procure delicious food!
I got the veggie platter and it was legit, and amazingly good tasting. You get hooked up in terms of portion here. However, definitely only a take out place. Tip if you visit: there isn't really street parking near there, so if you're headed East on 85th, park at the office building before it (if you can catch it) or across the street at the Greenwood Market.

While I was initially treated like I had the wrong address by an old suspicious looking woman they were quick and I got what is so far the best injera.

I had been hoping that a good East African restaurant would open in the area. After this one did I hesitated to visit for awhile because it didn't look like there was much going on inside.
While I was there, the restaurant was pretty much silent except for the rather loud hum of a large soda cooler. A small TV in the corner was running on mute. A young Ethiopian child kicked it with me quietly while I waited for my food; our attempts at communication were obstructed by a language barrier. Anyway, my food was ready in a little over five minutes and the woman who took my order was very polite.
The menu is pretty small, it includes several vegetable dishes ($7.50), lamb, beef, a rawish meat dish called kifto which I have never tried ($9.00), and a combination plate with your choice of meat and vegetables ($12.00). I ordered lamb with spinach and lentils. I'm impressed that I pretty much just wrote down their entire menu from memory.
When I lifted the overstuffed take-out box from the bag and set it on my dining table I was impressed by its weight, it was stuffed with pounds of food. $12 is kind of an expensive lunch but it's generally portioned and two people could definitely share one.
Everything was delicious. The lamb spicy and flavorful, cooked with onions and bell peppers. The spinach and lentils were also very tasty, and my meal came with more than enough injera to eat it all. A homey and satisfying meal. Also, the food was not oily in the least and it seemed very healthy, at least healthier than the food I typically eat. Check this place out!

As noted in other reviews, this place is really tiny (two tables of four if I remember correctly), and it doesn't even look like they serve food if you're just driving by (parking is across the street in the Fred Meyer parking lot), but to that point, some of the best food I've ever had comes from the small little places where the kitchen is also cooking food for their family and friends, and Zuma cooks some delicious food, the menu is a little slim, but the quality and quantity is great, and more than that, if you're inclined to cook your own Ethiopian they have everything you need, the Injera, Berbere, peas, lentils, shiro flour, even the Spiced Butter (Niter Kebbeh), which I just realized is crucial to getting that special Ethiopian restaurant flavor. So, if you're ever in the Ballard/Greenwood area and you're a fan of Ethiopian, you have to check it out. *they also do orders to go, though I've never tried that myself but I saw someone picking up an order while I was there.
Great Injera.
