Came here Sunday night for dinner. It was my second visit to Zocalo and it was really enjoyable.
The server was quick to serve us water, chips and three types of salsa, which were quite delicious. I ordered Camarones Enchipotlados (spicy tomato-sauced shrimp) and a blackberry margarita and my friend had the Chile Relleno (stuffed poblano chile).
Man, the blackberry margarita was yummy. To go with that, my entree was very tasty too! The shrimp were pretty big and had a nice crunch to them. The sauce was definitely a little bit spicy. I love sauce over rice, so the spicy sauce went really well with my pyramid of white rice. In addition to the rice on my entree, Zocalo provided complimentary cilantro rice and beans. I LOVED the cilantro rice. It's a little buttery and had the right amount of cilantro so the rice is not overwhelmed by its flavor.
Zocalo is sort of a ritzy place. The decor is very grand, making me feel like I'm at a Mexican resort. The servers are very nice to commoners like me, letting me feel welcomed to dine there. Combined with their good food, I'm pretty sure I'll be there again soon.
After six months or so from my last visit, the food as changed. Perhaps a new chef. The presentation is really awful, and they added some new dishes that I'm not fond of.
The salmon dish is not as good, nor is the ceviche, two of my favorite dishes. The new rice side is ugly looking, does not look appetizing. I'll give it one more try when I'm in Sac in two weeks.

I have been to this restaurant twice, and the best word to describe it's food is HEAVEN!

Zocalo is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Sacramento. Zocalo has so many pluses. I love the location, which is my favorite area downtown with all the trendy, cool restaurants nearby. I think it's the "nicest" Mexican restaurant in Sacramento, with their beautiful décor which is so my style, with the huge mirrors, palm trees and warm colors.
The last time I was there was a couple weeks ago when I went there for dinner. I ordered the steak Arachero which was so yummy! I love that it was tender and full of flavor. I love the vast tequila selection, fresh ingredients and twist on Mexican cuisine.
The service was just okay. It could've been better; meaning faster and friendlier. That's all.
I like this Mexican restaurant. Located in downtown Sac and the outdoor seating is great during summer. They have great food and I liked their posole (hope that's how u spell it). Price is a little pricey but I think you get good food for what you pay for. It's a cool place to hang out in. Must try their blackberry margaritas.
I was looking for a new breakfast place that I hadn't tried before, so we took a chance and walked to Zocalo.
Not only do they serve brunch, but it's very good, with interesting twists on typical breakfast fare. I had the huevos con salsa which was saucy deliciousness punctuated with perfectly crisp potatoes. I wasn't as crazy about the Carnitas con huevos that my boyfriend ordered, but I'm interested to try Pozole Rojo next time. My girl got the breakfast quesadilla and although it looks more like a taco to me, she said it was delicious.
It's also fun to take in the architecture and interior design while eating there. Something about the high ceilings and molding and details enhance the whole experience.
Side note: my server was a little strange, but luckily, it was entertaining more than anything else. She got the job done and was responsive, which is what matters to me.
This spot is a rare find. Formal enough to bring clients, but food good enough you'd think your on vacation in Mexico. The wait staff was very polite and helpful as well.
Shrimp tacos were delicious! Also, if mole is your flavor, you won't be disappointed. I think if you like mexican and eating out in trendy atmosphere's, Zocalo's is a must when in downtown sac!
ive gone to this place to get together with friends and thought it was going to be really good, but it was just okay. ive sat both outdoors and indoors. i liked the indoor seating at night with all the candles.
ive ordered different things and tried the dishes that were ordered at my table, and there hasnt been anything that i can say ive really enjoyed. i wouldnt suggest this place to anyone i know just because i dont like the food. their bar is great and their drinks are pretty strong (which isnt always a bad thing)
Ton of reviews on this place, so I'll be brief...
The Arrachera los Altos is fabulous for the beef-lovers. The Camarones Enchipotlados are a great appetizer, but they go quickly.
The Blackberry Margaritas are raved about here, and they are worth every single penny. Best margarita I've had since I was last in Mexico!
Yummy!!!
Five stars because the food is delicious, the staff is friendly, the mood is fun and relaxed. What a beautiful place!!!
Have a seat and take a deep breath. I'm about to do something you may never see again. I'm going to give a review of both the bar AND restaurant of this establishment. GASP!!!!! I know, I know.
I met some friends and colleagues here for dinner one warm summer evening. The atmosphere was lively and festive, and due to the beautiful weather, we opted to sit outside.
I chose the Pollo En Mole. The chicken itself was all white meat, which I don't have a problem with - if you're going to to it right. I'm having a few flashbacks here, but once again, the chicken was really dry. Eh, it was OK.
What I am obligated to mention though is the bar. They have one of the most extensive tequila collections I've seen. Very impressive! Of course, being in my element, I feel compelled to teach my friends a thing or two, so I buy a round of El Tesoro Paradiso - heaven in a glass.
Justification for my three stars: I'm taking a star off because of my dry chicken. I'm also taking a star off because of the slogan on the web site (not the MySpace page listed here). It says, "Not Mexican, Mexico". I found that ironic because when I got there, JENNIFER had a hell of a time with the appropriate pronunciation of my name. She must have been from one of indigenous mountainous regions.
No worries though, I plan on going back and trying some more of the menu. I'll let you know how that goes.
Not crazy about this place. I have been here three separate times, and each time I have hoped to have a different experience. Bottom line: the food is not bad, but it's not what you would expect from a restaurant in the downtown/midtown. I will say that the tacos are pretty good, but if you look are looking for good, filling mexican food I would try Tres Hermanas.
Great food, awesome service amazing atmosphere and even better dessert. I just celebrated my birthday here with my parents and it was de-lious. I couldn't have asked for a better location nor a nicer server. She was quick with our orders and made sure we were comfortable. They sang me a song and brought me a cheese cake type of dessert. The bill (i peeked) came out to be 40 for 3 people, and honestly being from san francisco... that was a steal. This isn't your normal day mexican food hole in the wall (which i love dearly too), but they added class and great vibes to the scene.
One of the greatest parts of being the 'b-day boy' was that we received 6 dollars off the bill. Which isn't something ive ever remember a single restaurant do in my life. I was chatting with my parents about the marketing behind this idea... and how genius it was. I would tell my friends to eat here just for that reason, and their friends would tell their other friends.
All in all. I was very happy to have gone. Classy, Tasty, and Great Service. Those are the things i live by. YUM!
I came here for the first time and for a drink, and I was impressed with the bar area as well as with the drink list because they offered caipirinhas. I dated a Brasilian gal a while back and she had me drink caipirinhas a lot to show off what her country has to offer. The caipirinha was part of a cocktail list encompassing the national drinks of several Latin American countries.
I don't know what the food is like and I expect it is mostly Mexican oriented as the place is called "Zocalo".
After I come here to get food I'll add or deduct a star.
Zocalo is a restaurant I frequent often for a number of reasons. The tequila selection is above and beyond what anyone else is doing in Sacramento. These are 100% blue agave tequilas that you sip; not shoot. If you've never drank tequila before, plan on attending one of their monthly tequila tastings. They're educational and fun. For those of you who refuse to drink tequila again based on a bad experience....remember, you had an experience with a bad tequila not a bad experience with tequila. Try it again. It's so worth the effort!
Their food is decent but not always consistent. LOVE their cilantro rice, ceviche and tortilla soup plus they have several healthy choices. If they're busy, don't expect the food to knock you off your seat. It won't. So order another shot of tequila.
Margaritas and other speciality drinks are good and they carry my favorite beer - Modelo Especial. Can't go wrong there.
Servers are always attentive and helpful. I always have a positive experience in the service department.
The ambiance and design of the restaurant give Zocalo a cool, hip vibe that transcends to their outdoor patio.
All in all, not bad. But for me... I go there for the tequila!
No, no, no... whats all the fuss about and how is this place so busy?! Yes, its an attractive looking place and the musicians they hire are pretty fantastic. Oh yeah, I'd also love to total a pitcher of those blackberry margaritas all on my own, I almost did, just to make the outing a wise investment. BUT, don't we go out to eat to... ummmm.... eat? Boring flavors, nicely presented, still don't warrant a good review or a return visit. My empanadas were little more than pasty bits covered in highly chillied sauce. The chicken burrito I tried was a mushy version of boring but really pretty and spicy. Service was pretty bad (except for a super cute n innocent looking bus boy). It was waaaaaaay loud, not difficult, but like impossible, to communicate with dining mates and it was freezin in there. Patio drinks before a night out or before a dinner elsewhere might cause me to stop in if I was in the area but I couldnt really recommend anything I ate. Yucko.
Had lunch here today. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area, which is tons quieter than inside. But since the forecast was high 90s, we sat in the lovely airconditioned area with high ceilings and beautiful surrounds.
The menu is what you would see on a "typical" Mexican menu except a notch up. I had the mole enchiladas. Three rolled up chicken enchiladas wrapped with corn tortillas and smothered in mole sauce served up on a platter. The rice and beans part is shared. Love that rice, I only wish there was more of it! It is jasmine rice infused with cilantro.
Thing is when you share side dishes, you have to be considerate to others at the table. You can't just spoon it all for yourself. How I wanted to do this, but my super ego did not let me
Personally this is a great place to come if you are on a diet. Portions are not super sized and you have to share the beans & rice.
It is hard to hear when there are lots of chattering people here. The floors are echo-y, the ceilings are echo-y. I once came here to do a presentation to a large group. Talk about noise!
The ambiance is just beautiful. I wouldn't mind having some of it in my dining room...
So I've been here about 4x now, and each experience up until last night had been "just O.K" - yesterday however was my birthday (that just HAPPENED to fall on 2nd saturday in midtown, yikes!) and I have to give it up to Zocalo for making it a perfect dinner despite the madness.
First of all, they don't take reservations for 2nd saturday, which irked me a tiny bit, but we got there an hour before we actually wanted to be seated and spoke with the hostess who was very sweet and attentive, and made sure to get us seated around the time we wanted. because we went so early, we also avoided the flood of people who came around 6:30pm.
My party of 6 started out with just 3, but the waitstaff was very patient and didn't rush us, even though I knew there were other large parties waiting for big tables. Eventually the rest of my dinner party showed up, and the waiter was attentive and prompt without smothering us. Since it was my birthday, we had our own cake, and the waitstaff refrigerated it for us and brought it out with a sparkler towards the end of my meal. they even cut and served it to us! This alone really makes Zocalo a winner in my book, and is the epitome of great customer service. Needless to say, our waiter got a fat tip, and we left full and happy.
BTW, some people have said they don't have great vegetarian selections, but I think they do pretty well for a Mexican restaurant. I ordered the vegetarian tostadas, and I couldn't even finish them - so I guess if you're used to gut-busting portions, Zocalo MIGHT seem small, but if you eat a reasonably normal amount of food, you should be fine with their portion sizes.
Aside from their AMAZING margaritas I am not a fan of this place.
The food is over-priced and unimpressive. I have eaten here 3 times, and every time left feeling like I had been robbed a bit. The food should be priced at half of what it is.
They do have the best margarita pitchers (strong!), so if you just want to get drinks, its worth going.
P.S. My pricing includes 1 drink per person.
Yummy food. I have yet to be disappointed by their food or service. I have not been blown away but will definitely come back for the great ambiance, food, and drinks!
I'm currently suffering from a severe case of food coma. I'm sitting on my bed and can only move my fingers to type this review. All other body parts have stopped working.
Why you may ask? Well let me tell you...I just came back from eating lunch at Zocalo.
Luckily it wasn't too hot in SacTown today so I got to sit out on the patio. As I walked in to meet my already seated friends, I noticed that everyone dining there were government working zombies. This could be because the Capital is a few blocks down the street. One of the workers quickly brought out some chips and salsa. The chips were thin and fresh, and there were 3 types of dips: two tomato based salsas and a bean dip. I've always been the person who enjoys the free chips and salsa as much as the main entree.
My friends and I took awhile to choose from the menu because everything sounded pretty yummy. We ordered and only waited a little while until our dishes came out. I ordered a lunch special of 3 pork tacos with a pineapple salsa. It was REALLY good. The flavors were prominent and everything complimented each other very well. Other than what we ordered, we received a bowl of cilantro rice and bowl of black beans to share between the 3 of us.
The prices were average. It came out to about $27 for three lunches (this only includes the food we ordered. no drinks). The patio seats were comfortable and the ambiance inside was good. My friend noted that it would be a cute place to have a rehearsal dinner. The downside is definitely parking. Street parking or valet.
Chips and salsa and margaritas, ole! These are a few of my favorite things.
I arrived in Sacramento early evening yesterday. My sister was kind enough to let me stay the night in preparation for a continuing education course today. After a long, hard day of work, I arrived famished and ready for a good meal and maybe a cocktail too. I mean, it was Thursday after all.
Neither one of us could decide what type of cuisine we wanted to partake in. We drove around and came across Zocalo. My sister said she had heard good things about it, but had never tried it. I'll never pass up chips and salsa and margaritas so Zocalo it was.
The atmosphere is quite chic and festive. This would be a fun place for a birthday party or a girls' night out. Our server promptly greeted us and brought ice water with lemon. She gave us just enough time to make our selections and took our drink and dinner orders. I couldn't decide between the house or blackberry margarita. I asked our server for her rec and she said the blackberry was her fave. Sold! My sister ordered the house version, which worked out well because I was able to steal a sip or two (with permission of course).
The chips were served with a selection of tres salsas and dips. My fave was the black bean dip. Tasty! Our libations were so delicious and refreshing! They were definitely some of the best margaritas I've ever had. I also liked the fact that they were served sans salt, which is a plus for me.
Our entrees were scrumptious. My sister had the grilled pear and shrimp salad. Quite enjoyable. I ordered the fish tacos. So delicious! Three fish tacos on mini corn tortillas were nestled next to one another on a thin rectangular plate. They were the perfect size for a girl.
I will definitely return if I'm in the area. I just can't pass up those tacos and that blackberry margarita. Salute!
I went here with a friend, the staff is very friendly and upbeat. The food is GREAT at a reasonable price. It has a very good atmosphere as well. I will definitely go back.
Food was fantastic! I recommend the Mole Enchiladas! HOLY MOLE!!! They were delicious! I just kept saying, "Wow," over and over.... And the Cilantro rice is great if you like cilantro! Personally, I love it!
Service was a little slow, but it was busy, so I'll give the guy a break...
Excellent food for what you pay! My new favorite Mexican restaurant in Sacramento!
Myself and a couple of fellow Yoginis ate here today. we were all starved after a tough Yoga class at Zuda Yoga. After struggling to fit the SUV into a space meant for a Volkswagen, we were even more hungry! We were lucky enough to get a table outside. For some reason food always tastes better out of doors. The weather was beautiful, the food was fantastic. We shared a pitcher of Marqueritas. The chips and salas make my mouth water just thinking about them, and that was over 8 hours ago. Our entres arrived promply and we dove into them like we had just completed a Marathon. I have been here a few times, and noticed Zocalo draws a very electic crowd, We had a wonderful time, Mom would have been proud because we all cleaned our plates. Cannot wait to go back! HMM HMM GOOD
I went to Zocalo for cinco de mayo and I love how the inside makes you feel like your outside. That day the weather was perfect of even though I was inside I could feel the breeze coming in.
I went for happy hour and I would recommend getting their blackberry margaritas or their mojitos. They were both verryyy good!!! I think it was around $7 or $8 each.
I also had the tacos which were cheap I think $2. They were really good you could get chicken, steak, or pork. They were good the only thing is they were bite sized. It probably wasn't bigger than the palm of my hand.
Ambiance is nice, but can get a little noisy when it's busy. Service is good most of the time. No happy hour :(
The overpriced Mexican food...the food have a slight twist. The cilantro rice with black beans that comes with the meal to share is decent. You can't go wrong with the taco plates. Three small tacos...perfect. Anyone of them are tasty. It's more like the sliders but think tacos. Or think street food!
Price is higher for most speciality items, but if you stick with the tacos, salads, burritos, pricing is average for midtown.
Parking is poor...actually no stars if you go after 5:30. Valet is $5, but it's worth it because the foot traffic is crazy near their corner. Lunch time can get busy, best to walk if you work close by.
While downtown on Saturday, we followed our noses to find a place to eat. I was surprised to find Zolcalo open for breakfast. We had a seat inside, but with the big window walls thrown open it was the best of both worlds. There were lots of people and dogs to watch while we ate.
We both chose carnitas with eggs and the chorizo potatoes. The carnitas were moist and flavorful, but they took a back seat to the potatoes. The flavor of the chorizo permeated the potatoes without being greasy. They were fluffy on the inside and crunchy outside. The cilantro rice is an old favorite, too.
I can hardly wait to go back.
After much deliberation on a hot day my boy and I ended up at this classy establishment. If I were basing this review on decor and atmosphere alone I would give it a 5. There is great attention to detail in the decorations and I had fun people watching. There were many real housewives of sacramento milf types enjoying their saturday afternoon in skimpy dresses. I could totally have fun relaxing here with friends grabbing a few drinks. They also have an amazing drink selection. I got a margarita with POM juice and it was fantastic. The service was also top notch. The busboys should get most of the recognition as they are intent and quick to satisfy your every need.
What detracted from this place... First of all the cost. I like to have more than one drink. At Zocalo if I did this, I would most likely end up on the street begging for money so I can get my next $9.50 margarita. If you want to sit at that bar you've got to be a high roller. That explains the high concentration of milf.
The second item that made me give this place 3 stars was the food. I ordered the vegetarian tostadas. The flavors were not complex. I felt jipped paying $13 for an uninspired dish I could have easily thrown together in 5 minutes. My boy got the flautas and I took a bite and they could not stand up to flautas you can get at a little hole in the wall place for half the price. I also noted they use a lot of black beans and that one kind of cheese on everything! By the middle of my meal I was so tired of those flavors. I suggest they try something a little more innovative with their food.
Go here more for the flash, clientele, and margaritas. Skip the food. You'll get drunk faster and it'll help you foot the bill for your drinks.
Let me just put it this way.
Zocalo is like an insufficiently brined olive in a gigantic martini.
Met for brunch with my previous co-workers from Sac. We've all heard that the space is beautifully decorated. In fact, when you walk in, note the high ceilings, palm trees/tropical plants, marble floors.
The grandiosity of this place (gasp! in midtown Sac!) definitely lures you in. Couple with the fact that they have amazing seating in their outside patio which is perfect on sunny days. However, the food doesn't quite hit the mark.
My friend's french toast (yeah, yeah, this IS a Mexican restaurant, but it's still brunch!) is ok. But if you want the fruit option (i.e. Strawberry) it's an extra $2. We also tried the chile colorado, which is good. My chorizo con huevos was decent, but I wish my chorizo has a bit more spiciness to it, instead of just being too greasy.
Our waiter was a bit distracted but not totally absent. At least, he remembered to check up on us ONE time.
Next time I'm in Sac, I'll probably try Zocalo for happy hour. Because for brunch, it's more of a miss than a hit.
I just went to Zocalo for the last time. I've always thought it was pretty good, and I like how they have a more adventurous menu, not just limited to tacos and burritos. But for what you get, this place is stupidly overpriced. The food is not THAT good and seriously, unless a burrito is filled with filet mignon, I don't know how you can charge $12 for it.
I do like the chips and dips they give you when you sit down; it's a nice twist on the chips and salsa that you often get at mexican places.
Some of the menu items are good, others can actually be a bit boring. Last time there, I got the steak tacos, which were good, but I really did not understand the items on the side of the plate. They gave me a piece of tofu (wtf?). And I don't know if the inspiration was in some half-brained attempt to be "fancy" or what, but what is the deal with giving an entire table a tiny bowl of rice and beans to share? That should be the one thing any restaurant is generous with, if nothing else, they are dirt cheap and at least make people feel like they're being taken care of. (I was once there and someone at my table started eating right out of the community beans because he assumed that, given the size of the serving, they were his individual side dish.)
Bottom line: if you're in the mood for mexican, go somewhere else and use your extra money to buy another margarita.
My experience at Zocalo reminds me: "Do not judge a book by it's cover!"
Why...
Carnitas was very dry. Ernesto's has tastier and juicy Carnitas.
Only plus were the black berry margaritas. So, this is definitely just a place for drinks.
Very nice restaurant and bar with an open "feel" to it. The bar scene is trendy and cool. Chips and dips are very good. The food was somewhat lacking. I had the skirt steak. The portion was gigantic but unfortunately the meat quality was not that great. I would take a smaller, higher quality portion over what I was served. This place has promise and I will definitely go back.
Zocalo is consistently the finest Mexican food in Sacramento.
The ambiance of the restaurant itself is a throwback to what I would envision a place like San Miguel de Allende would be like. The food always starts with a unique take on the chips and salsa. Nicely seasoned chips with an offering of two salsas and a refried black bean dip. Delicious! I like ordering from their selection of tacos. The presentation is always very good, the tacos fold up perfectly for eating without stuff spilling everywhere, the flavors are spot on and you get a generous serving of rice and beans on the side.
I'm not a huge fan of the bar there, however if there's a game I want to see on, I'd happily sit at the bar, eat, drink and watch the game. One other tip, try the brunch. They offer way more than just huevos rancheros.
Apparently I'm a minority when it comes to Zocalo. I love the idea of a high-end Mexican food place. What I don't love is paying $15 for a miniscule entree just because I'm in a hyped up restaurant that thinks it can charge Bay Area prices in Sacramento.
The ambiance in here is phenomenal... it's a BEAUTIFUL restaurant. Service is usually just okay, nothing to write home about. The food is pretty good... but I've never had something that knocked my socks off. I just cannot pay $25+ for a meal that I think is borderline mediocre AND that leaves me hungry without feeling really, really ripped off.
However... their margaritas do rock.
I walked into Zocalo feeling under-dressed (casual wear need not apply) and, after glancing over the menu, largely unwelcome.
Having less than four Vegetarian-friendly items (and all high-priced) says to me one thing: "We cater only to unsustainable, upscale, meat hungry clientele".
It hasn't been safe to assume that all your walk-ins are meat eaters since the 1950's--unless, that is, you are a Steakhouse or located in Texas--so for this reason, Zocalo suffers and will not be receiving my business--again.
The best aspect of this restaurant is it's atmosphere. I went here on a rainy Wednesday night, but the place was still close to full, with more than enough ambient noise and dressed-to-impress patrons to feel like you were in a place-to-be. I'm sure the full bar, dim lighting, and modern Latin decor helps as well...
The hostess is welcoming and seats your party as soon as a table is open. The servers are also friendly, albeit slow at times. I didn't mind however, because there is enough people-watching and conversation going on that one doesn't notice the wait time as much.
I haven't found a restaurant with better chips and black bean dip than Zocalo. It's like the chips came straight out of an oven, with just the right amount of crunchy-ness and saltiness. On both my visits to Zocalo, I probably ate enough chips to satiate most people's appetites, but fortunately I have a mean appetite and Zocalo has an appetizing entree menu. Try their tacos de cazuelo or carnitas taco; both are simply delicious, with fresh ingredients and just the right amount of sweet and spicy...
I love this place !!!!!!!I love the food. The ambiance is great. The only bad thing is the parking. They offer valet parking which is great but not for people on a budget. I had a special event there for my daughters and brought my own cake they not only allowed me to bring it they refrigerated it for me cut it for us served it and even put neat sparklers on it for us. We've had a great culinary experience every time we've gone and it's kid friendly for well behaved kids.
i went here with my mom and fiance on a beautiful sunday afternoon and they were very accomadating in letting us sit outside. we had to wait a few mins but that was okay - i had my 1st mojido and i loved it!
the food was ok. i had one of the managers specials and wasn't that impressed with the meal. my fiance thought it was "eh" and my mom would never say anything but i don't think she liked it either. the prices are expensive, ranging $13 - $20 an entree.
i would go back for maybe happy hour and definetley the mojido.
it was very loud inside; there was a singer but it was also very hard to carry on a conversation with my family w/o having to speak very loudly. when teh singer ended they turned on their music - just as loud and intrusive.
good ambiance and fun for that one time but won't be back.
A little overpriced, a little underwhelming.
Great bar, Lots of beautiful people, and good food. It is not "mexican" like I would have ever thought of but maybe a gourmet version of it.
Always great service, it seams like they have got two people checking on all tables.
